Aion- Pre-Order? hmm..

philljdphilljd Member Posts: 4

I have never pre-ordered a game before.. mostly because i dont want to pay for something with out certainty i will get it. But with the recent hype about AION ONLINE i really want to play in the closed betas coming up.

My orginal thoughts were to just wait until an open beta comes or to just wait until the games releases because i'm not to keen on paying just to play in a beta.

Maybe its just the Hype and everyones excitment involving Aion thats almost tricking me into wanting to buy it when i usually wouldn't but i am fed up of watching vids of the game just wanting to log on and play! Another annoying poke is the fact that you get a head start so i wouldn't have to wait as long!

So what im asking is, Do you guys think its a sensible idea me pre-ordering it:

And Mainly.. From people who have pre-ordered MMOs before is it safe and convinient? and does it work not having a hard copy? my fear is that my system will crash and cause me to have to reinstall Aion and it doesnt come with ease not being able to jsut shove a disk in a be done with it.

Thanks Phill :D

    solution:

*edit* just noticed they changed their in-store pickup policy..  damn when did that happen?

*second edit* guess I should be a little more helpful :)

Im not sure what your taste in games are, but for myself Im just an all around gamer.  I make my way around to nearly every MMO eventually so I almost always pre-order MMO's.   Hell Ive purchased MMO's because the collectors edition was on sale and didnt touch them for months.

Also not sure how much info you have on Aion, but if you really understand what type of game it is and are anticipating it why wouldnt you pre-order it?  You're gonna end up paying for the box eventually, so why not pick it up now and take part in the OB and head start?  Theres about as much information about the game as you're going to get even after release.  I dont think the release of the game is going to open up anything you cant find out now.

I guess what Im saying, is if you cant make an informed decision about Aion now, you'll be in the same boat after it releases.  The NDA is lifted, theres videos, theres a wealth of information out there.. go check it out and see if it suits you.

It's not sensible at all. Going to amusement parks isn't sensible either, but it sure is fun as hell.

Sensible is buying the pre order while being able to afford to.

    You make the call =)

Since you have never pre-ordered a game before let me impart some words of wisdom.
There is a difference between pre-ordering and pre-purchasing a game.
Pre-purchasing a game locks you into the purchase.  There is no refund available, but if you REALLY try, sometimes you can get your money back if the game has not released yet.  If the game has already been released, you will not be able to get a refund.
Pre-ordering a game does not lock you into the purchase.  If you pre-order from a physical store like Best Buy and later decide you do not want to buy the game you can take your receipt back to the store, before the game has released, and get your $5 back, no questions asked, no hastle.
I only pre-order through Best Buy but I have heard the same is true for Gamestop stores.  I'm not sure of their policy when pre-ordering online.  I have heard that if there is a promo code with the pre-order once you receive that code in the email you can no longer get your money back for the game, but I'm not sure that's 100% accurate.
My orginal thoughts were to just wait until an open beta comes or to just wait until the games releases because i'm not to keen on paying just to play in a beta.
It doesn't cost you any extra money to pre-order.  The $5 spent on the pre-order goes toward the final cost of the game, just keep your receipt.  And like I said, at least at a physical store, you can always get your money back if you change your mind.
Maybe its just the Hype and everyones excitment involving Aion thats almost tricking me into wanting to buy it when i usually wouldn't but i am fed up of watching vids of the game just wanting to log on and play! Free perks are always good in my opinion.
So what im asking is, Do you guys think its a sensible idea me pre-ordering it:
From a physical store, yes.  Digital Download, I would not recommend it.  Lots of horror stories about not getting keys for weeks after release, issues with customer service, etc.
And Mainly.. From people who have pre-ordered MMOs before is it safe and convinient?
Again, from a physical store, you have nothing to worry about.  Digital Download is very convenient and secure.  But if you have an issue it can be a lot harder to get a solution then being able to go into a store and talk to someone.
and does it work not having a hard copy? my fear is that my system will crash and cause me to have to reinstall Aion and it doesnt come with ease not being able to jsut shove a disk in a be done with it.
Luckily with Aion, even with a digital download purchase, you can always just download the game from your PlayNC Account page.  You would, of course, have to wait for it to download.
Or you could just make a backup of your Aion folder in case your PC crashes.
    Thanks Phill :D

Personally I pre-order every MMO game that I am interested in.  I have never had an issue getting my money back if I change my mind later, and I am always happy to receive some free items/game time for no additional cost.

    Pre-ordering is safe and fun..

If you dont feel safe.. then wait for retail and buy the box :)

The main difference is you get to enjoy the game before most people..

If you watch The Karate Kid backwards it's about this karate champ that just kinda slowly becomes a pussy and ends up moving back to Jersey

I don't understand why you think digital downloads are worse, or "less safe" than a a retail copy. For one, if you have an issue with the game its self you'll have to go through NCSoft. However it feels a lot easier to just call up, or go online, and talk to customer support for a digital download then having to drive your ass to the retail store.

I buy almost all of my games digital download now because it is simply more convenient. For one, if my hard drive crashes, or I move computers, I don't have to try and hold on to a bunch of random ass CD's. I don't have to make sure to keep the CD keys, ect. ect. Let me just say that I find non digital download games (for the PC at least) very un-convenient. So many times have I lost the CD key or I can't find where I left the game case, and then I'm fucked out of the money I spent.

With a digital download I just go back to the site I bought the game from and download it again. The two services I use are Direct2drive and steam. With Direct2drive (I usually use this one for MMO releases) I can just redownload the game through their service at any time, whenever I want, on any computer. With Steam all I need is the steam client and then I can log on my steam account and bam! access to all of the games I bought through it. Considering the number of games I have purchased through steam or Direct2Drive it's a godsend that I don't have to keep in touch with their CD Keys and other bullshit.

ps: not to mention I got my beta key right away with a digital download.
