The Chronicles of Spellborn: Original Spellborn Goes Free to Play

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

The folks from The Chronicles of Spellborn have updated their Dev Blog here at MMORPG.com. This time, they talk about the game's move into the free to play arena.

It happens sometimes; a really good game will slip through the cracks. There are a lot of reasons why this happens and I know you will have opinions, but I’m not here to talk about that.

I feel like Spellborn was one of those games. A solid MMORPG with a twitch combat interface that meant that player skill actually mattered in PvP. Most of those who played it enjoyed it. And it did pretty well in the reviews online. It was originally a subscription based game with servers in EU and North America, and is now in redevelopment to be converted to a F2P. Acclaim still has servers running the original version and that is why I’m writing this.

Historian, as usual, is full of crap. Most of those who played it did NOT like it. Otherwise, the company wouldn't have gone bankrupt ( while Historian pumped smoke up everyone's ass here about how everything was peachy ), allowing Acclaim to take it over as a FTP cash shop game.

Agreed. I find the article humorous with the line, "a really good game will slip through the cracks", pretty sure really good game does not include Spellborn.

I can't even get this game to run on my computers, I tried a few times and gave up...

Most of the f2p play games are better than spellborn, so I don't expect it will do well as a f2p either.

    well i DID like it!

    great environment..

most peopel didnt like it.. because hey had to pay4it, and there were rumors for beeing a f2p game..

so why didnt YOU like it?

    thank u for your answers

I enjoyed it a lot! Unfortunately, the patches kept making it worse and not better.

Hm. I personally enjoyed the time, albeit somewhat short time, I had in Spellborn. The lore was rather fascinating to me, the combat bar was an interesting concept which took a little bit to get used to, but once gotten I liked it well enough. It was jumpy in combat occasionally, and some of the quests got tedious, as in all mmos. The art style was a nice change, the animations relatively decent. I think this game had alot of untapped potential, and could have been made into something decent.

I will probably still play it as a F2P. To those who don't like this game or move on to another, I wish you luck in your other mmorpg endeavors =)

you have to pay extra for that now...

just check the item shop for <stable client>....should be cheap, unless it still says "Coming Soon!"

I enjoyed the game, I just stopped playing it after my first month of paying because I wasn't 100% sure it was worth the money. and If I'm going to pay for it-then I have to be sure. I will enjoy the game as a F2P though, and I think it will probably thrive with a cash shop model.

maybe it have a new chance now....

i hope many people who have enough from the eternally  same games will try this

  • purewitzpurewitz Member UncommonPosts: 489

Its not a bad game (I played it in the Acclaim closed beta.), but I did see this coming from a mile away. I even said that Spellborn would go F2P within a year on the Acclaim forums back in January of this year  and got my thread deleted by a Mod, lol.

When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there!

Honestly I really liked the game. Didn't seem to pull me in like other MMOs though.

Early experiences with Acclaim didn't exactly help any either.

actually, your post is also full of crap. :)

truth is, most who played it liked it. BUT: it was a niche game for a certain crowd, the usual wow-addon dependent couldn't cope with the different gameplay AND the way the launch was handled killed the few who would have subbed (US launch months later, and the absolutely stupid separation of EU into frogster/acclaim territory. I really hope the one who came up with this idea gets fired and is banned from ever influencing a mmo in the future).

so yeah, even good stuff can wither off if it's treated poorly...

Historian full of bullshit as usual: check.

Company went bankrupt because noone would pay for the game? Check.

Acclaim now turning it into a FTP item shop game: check.

Nope, no crap in my post.

And again, most did NOT like it, otherwise they'd have been playing and paying. Trying to blame it on WoW players kinda puts you in the same league as the Historian. What different gameplay? They made the hotbar rotate, whoop-dee-do. Oh, and clothing had no stats unless you added gems, just like most cheap Korean FTP crap. Try as you might, you can't spin a turd into gold.

The game has fun combat: check.

    Interesting lore: check.

    Good graphics: check

This does, in fact, make for a decent game. Yes, there are issues, but the game is both playable and enjoyable. I like it. A lot. Even in the state it is right now it is better than the miriad of grinder clones out there.

And how is historian full of bullshit in his post? Please point that out.

And hell, at least ONE F2P MMO with somewhat different approach/setting than your usual asian MMO clone.

Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

I thought the game was very refreshing from the monotonous "Attack & Sit Back" MMOs these days. Combat was amazing in many aspects. Classes were interesting and questing was sub-par. The real thing that stuck me was the Lore and backstory that was seriously worked on.

Only thing that killed this game was the crappy launch and its developers. Absoulutely no advertising was done by Acclaim to promote this marvelous gem. Instead, they decided to rush the product out unfinished, chock full of bugs!

Spellborn did'nt deserve the disrespect it recieved. Acclaim sure did, but not the game. Hopefully, it will get a second chance and be reborn as a great F2P.

well  the bad bad marketing, the god danm silly server split (many other games do that too.. WHY the hell???) and the god damn WOW killed that game, which looked great, played kinda different, and hat a nice beginning.

you didnt only start the game and sitting there for a typical "what now" situation.

as i saw on aion beta: cool intro, then.. u r there.. somewhere.. u dont know WHY, u dont know what to do what ever..

and then? u see the boring typical quest giver 1 and start with the boring typical quest style1: kill 4 mobs.. and then.. (WOWW !!) quest 2: kill 5x different mob.. (wow what a beginning!)

ok aion is using a great engine.. (but actually doesnt use its full possibilities, thats obious), but.. when i started TCOS, i felt to be INSIDE.. not many games gimme that feeling...

most games gimme the feeling of beeing a GUEST visiting the game (also the same feeling in wow, but a bit better then in AION cb)

    a quite senseless post.

graph was good .. playable? for sure! but it was a bit different to all the standard mmorpg clones (inclunding wow)

so i see u R a standard mmorpg gamer and dont know whats good about "the different approach" (btw: it was not SO different at all)

well if i play another game, i WANT another game.. not only different map and different game name.

If TCOS released back when it was originally planned to , without bugs, etc, it may have had a decent population.  I understand the goal is to release with a polished game, but releasing after AoC and WAR definitely didn't help.

The game have alot of potencial...

the battlesystem is the best system i've ever seen before in a MMORPG

the biggest problem of this game is the population and i hope it will grow up next time...
