Another year of mmo disappointment in 2009 ?

Everything is too same old and tbh I've already played World of Warcraft, I don't want to play it a thousand other times, so give me something new that innovates the genre.

I really had high hopes for MMOs in 2009. I was really looking forward to Jumpgate Evolution, Earthrise, and Fallen Earth. Jumpgate is turning out to be absolutely nothing like what they originally claimed and lead on to. Fallen Earth seems very "meh" to me and a lot of people are saying it isn't ready to launch. My last hope is Earthrise, and if it doesn't release this year or releases and sucks, chalk up 2009 as another year of crappy MMOs. 5th year and running!

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

MMO's are killing games, players spend too much time/money invested in one game and aren't really going out and buying other games.

I'm glad Lich King was crap, because since I've stopped I've found a job that pays 50% more than what I was earning whilst playing and is considerably higher profile than my old job, which I lost partly because I played too much. Given that we are in the end-middle of a recession thats MY ACHIEVEMENT and it feels fantastic and real.

The real problem is that people's expectations are growing faster than the technology and development resources.

I was right along with you until you had to just "assume" on Mortal Online so quickly.  You lost me there bro.

Yup, 2008 and 2009 have been a compete waste of my time.

2010 brings on some stronger competitors however, such as hopefully, FFIV and SW: TOR, and perhaps the new WoW expansion will tide me over into playing again.

The real problem is that studio's are rushing the release of their mmo's to compete with giants such as WoW, in the end games just have to take time to be made to work out all the kinks, I mean vanguard saga of heros was supposed to be the next big thing, but im not too sure about it, but i think their funds were cut and they released early with what they had. Aion looks decent but when a game is revolved around a concept such as PvPvE is sounds like a clusterf*ck and personally that isnt my style of gaming, some people like it though. Champions looks cool because not only does the custimization come down to character design but also ability and skill design. Jumpgate Evo didnt even catch my eye and I will have to look at that but thats about all I acknowledge as games the jury should even judge.

I agree with most of your post but your way off as far as Aion goes imo. Aion is by far the best MMO launch this year..not because its doesnt have competition but because its a polished MMO from a great company. It has the best parts of all MMOs out there right now. Give Aion about 1-2 years and it will still be at the top. See the 1.5 update? If thats a taste of things to come, Aion will has a long road ahead of it. Of course if ncsoft doesnt listen to the players and give them what they want, Aion can quickly go downhill....

The future of MMORPGs is NCsoft in my humble opition. GW2 is going to blow the socks off this genre. Of course its only my opition but GWs is highly over-looked. Once GW2 comes out the haters will be flocking in get ingame..and the current fans can only say "I told ya so" :-)

NCsoft games have a tendecy to fall on their butts. Guild Wars went nowhere, Lineage is like 5$ in the the store. And all of NCsofts's f2p games are simple kiddy games to me. NCsoft will never compare to Blizzard or Sony because there games are not well rounded. Aion has been their big creation and all, but i was not satisfied with the beta, I dont even like the class system where there is only one type of healer, and only one type of tank, those are little things that turn me off. The game did break Beta Testing records but I have no faith that the game will ever reach number 1 over WoW.

     blah blah blah...stupid editors

anyway, Guild Wars has sold over 5 million copies of their games, how is that going nowhere?

2009 will probably be a disappointment but there is a good chance that Aion will be a hit.  We'll have to wait, if Aion flops like every other MMO I guess the next almost certain hit will be FF XIV next year.  Hopefully 2010 will be a good year. (I've been saying the same thing about the following year since 2005)

So a game has to have more subs than WOW to be a success?  Aion is a good game period. Im still not sure i will be buying it  next month but i can tell you from my time in beta this game is going to do well, yes even here in NA with all the elitist, hardcore, WOW enthusiasts. WOW fans really need to get over themselves and realize that not everyone thinks WOW is the only game available.  I cant believe that a lot of people numbly grinding the same old crap day after day arnt sick to death of it. With the amount of what should be quality games on the horizon i look to see WOW lose a lot of subs. No, Aion nor any other game will kill WOW but all of these up coming games will take a bite of the beast.

Regardless of Aion & CO, 2010 shall be the redeeming year...FFXIV & Old Republic will bring greatness! (hopefully)

And if 2010 fails us (I desperately hope not), I'll just wait for D3 and whatever gets churned up round then and/or hop back to an older mmo :/

Well 2010 should hold a ton of promise with Guild Wars 2 and The Old Republic but we have to get there first. :) Right now I am just excited about getting a glimpse of Guild Wars 2 this week!

Its been a decent year for me so far, but then again, I play EVE.

I'll be giving Aion a go, and if it doesn't work out, perhaps one of the others will.

Regardless, I'll split my time between EVE and whatever game out there provides some entertainment, even if it isn't long term.

I don't think that proves that HE thinks WoW is a good game. Just because you show other people like something doesn't mean everyone does.

    I'm with him, I really enjoyed WoW as a time-filler, but I don't really believe it's a good game.

"Does a game have to have more subs than WOW to be a success?" Was my question. Which i already know the answer too and i also have a good idea what your link would take me too. Ive no doubt the big numbers impress you as WOW fanbois are easily impressed. Many people watch TV as well but it doesnt make it good.

Im not trying to convince him WoW is a good game, Im just saying WoW is the most succesful game out there ever probably and I think if you dont like something why do it?, and if your only excuse is its a time filler then theres a lot better things to do with free time, I do it because there is obviously no other game out there that can dethrone WoW and trust me its the best value for your dollars, 15$ a month for that much content is the best deal.

Is it me or isnt every game the same ol crap when your done with it?

Its you. There are several games i have played that i look back on and say, "that was a good game". WOW is not one of them.

People Lie, Numbers dont, in the real world demographics get you places, you dont win cases in court without proof and you dont go to business meetings and improvise, If we resorts to numbers, sure subs are one of the numbers Im not saying its the only number, but its a very convincing demographic to refer too.

How can 2009 be "another year of mmo disappointment?"

Only one MMO has released (Darkfall) with the others dues towards the end of it? It's obviously still to early but if you look at Darkfall as a failure and AION as a success (in Asia) with 3.5 million people, that would be a wash.

One hit and one failure. 50% is a good rate on MMOs actually.

I don't think we'll ever have another year as bad as 2008 when a game like Warhammer Online wins "Best New Game of the Year" as much as a piece of trailer trash as it was.

I don't think that proves that HE thinks WoW is a good game. Just because you show other people like something doesn't mean everyone does.

    I'm with him, I really enjoyed WoW as a time-filler, but I don't really believe it's a good game.

For me, the only relevant content during TBC and WotLK was endgame content, the rest of it just falls off when a new expansion comes in.

Unbalanced PvP and not enough raids when an expansion is released, which only gets fixed 6 months or so later.

imo they just keep resetting with less and less content after an expansion is released, which is why they are revamping all of the old dungeons and azeroth, to get their content back.

but again, "better things to do with free time" and "best deal" are entirely subjective to each person's play style and preferences.

Alright im going to make this clear, I have no malicious feelings towards you guys, Im just saying there are those people out there that play WoW so much that they start hating it, which is there problem, people who play play play and do everything in the game which means they had to like the game to be able to put that much time in and then outta nowhere they just start hating it, WoW gets old I'm not going to lie but for any given time if you liked the game and the only reason you stopped is because it got old doesnt make a bad game it just makes it an old game. One more time I have no intent of calling people names or bashing their opinions of you feel I did, for that I apologize.
