What makes Aion different from WoW or any other Fantasy MMO for that matter? I played it and it felt like the same in a long list of games I've already played. I looked forward to Aion based on the awesome promo vids that came out but playing in Beta I find it seems to be just more of the same. Granted I did not play deeply into the game but if a game isn't fun for me from the start then I am not inspired to play it further.
So can anyone tell me other than being new what makes it good or any better than WoW?

-the little stones (forget what they're called) that you can put in your armor are far more common and are available earlier than the gems in WoW, and can be used for every piece of equipment, allowing for deeper character customization.
Other than that, not much. The first two are true for most games. They all have different lore and different classes (or a different way of doing them). The hype that Aion is getting really isn't justified. It's not a bad game, but it isn't the next MMO titan.

It's a polished MMORPG in a big line of not so polished ones. Hence the player generated hype. The company generated hype is rather minimal, considering how closer we are to launch.
Why.....WHY.....WHYYYYYY must we always compare every damn game to WoW.

One is a PvE game and the other is a mostly PvP game with some decent PvE thrown in. They play totally different in the long term.
First ... reading is fundamental. (See the part that says "as well as any other Fantasy MMO ...etc.)
Second it is what I played for years and continue to return to when I want my Fantasy MMO fix as opposed to AoC, WAR, or any of the other pretenders to the Throne and ... it's my post.
Third WoW is the standard that most if not all game developers aspire to and the majority of ppl (10 mil) play. It is the undesputed 800 pound gorilla of MMO ... why would I compare it to anything else?
I hate when ppl just flame without providing constructive criticism. Tell me what you would compare it too and maybe I'll try that.

at the end of the day not much
Both have have alot of items, consubales, and enchants and other slottable gear items to keep you grinding and playing for years to come.
the only main difference i see is WoW's pvp is focused on competive instanced fighting.
Aions pvp is focused on outdoor PvP, like WAR's which will in turn lead to its downfall because people will not bother with pvp and farm AP through the quickest means possible...PvE.

That question sound to me like "What is different in one shooter to another?"
Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

Well, lets see, whats differs the Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe from the latest Dan Brown book..... they are both books, they are both wrote in paper, they all have characters on their storys and they even use the same type of cover depending on the printing..... What the HELL, are Dan Brown's books clones of those of Edgar Allan Poe?

WoW is not the benchmark game to compare other games to though.
There were countless games before WoW. There has been little innovation in WoW other than providing a dumbed down buffet version of what came before. It is easier and simpler than most games, so it catered to the masses. It reminds me of when USA Today first came out - looking at it compared to one of the Posts or Tribunes.

Nobody can make the game fun for you. Comparing it to WoW or any other game is pointless if it is not fun for you.
If you do not enjoy Aion or any other game - why bother trying to find somebody to convince you otherwise?
You can only go around, beta this and that - try this and that - until you find a game that is fun for you (until it is no longer fun and you look for another game).
Perhaps it is a greater disillusionment with MMORPGs in general? To be honest, that has been my problem for the longest time - all the games are single player or co-op mini-games set in massive 3D chatrooms. There is no persistent world where what the player does matters. How many groups are killing the same boss day in and day out, yet the world never changes. In the end, it is all rather pointless and you might as well be sitting around playing Bejeweled while on TS or Vent and talking to friends.

Lol never did I mention that I wanted another WOW phenomenon...I am just sick of a WOW clones. When you said " I hope not." does that mean you hope that developers keep making WOW clones and they fail and people keep playing WOW?
Hmm Aion has:
A better combat style
Ability to do aerial combats
Class balances
Graphics/customizations
No carebear mob fighting since it's harder but not to the point that it's unplayable
Seems enough of points that aion has different aspects from wow.

Not everyone enjoys PvP and if a game has huge amounts of PvP it has less PvE then other games.

I have not even bothered to attempt to get into the beta or join the community, I have zero interest in PvP. If I want to beat someone up I will load up an FPS and do it there where it is a level playing field and I am not hamstrung by piss poor game balancing.

Aion will attract people that like to pvp AND pve of course wow is more pve oriented and pvers like myself won't play aion but still i tried the game reached the cap and find it fun and amazing but it's not my type of game.
I think Aion will develop into a game trying to attract a more adult audience.
Blizzard knows it needs new blood to keep its numbers up, and given that anyone who is likely to WANT to play an MMO is already playing one, then "new blood" means children.
I don't believe Aions numbers will ever match WoW, but in the end it will probably be a better game because of that. In my opinion WoW:Aion will be #1 and #2 in the market for quite a long time.

From what I can tell, AION is very much a WOW clone in the first 20 levels. Meaning its is a class/level based game in which players advance their characters by running large numbers of PVE oriented quests. WOW did not invent this mechanic, AC2 was the first I believe, with EQ2 coming out about the same time as WOW) but they did bring it to the masses and hence any game with this at its core design is deemed by many as a WOW clone.
Where Aion branches off is around levels 20-25 and those folks who won't play a game that isn't immediately to their liking might be missing out. (sometimes you just have to pay your dues folks, fact of life)
At this mid-point in a characters advancement the game becomes decidedly PVP oriented, with the game encouraging players to spend more and more time in the Abyss, an RVR style combat zone a la DAOC however the third faction is NPC controlled and will intervene in player affairs depending on the state of the conflict. (this could be the game's coolest feature or its lamest.)
They also add in the unexpected, by opening rifts between the PVE zones of the two factions so no player will be truely immune from the effects of PVP combat though it can be limited in impact of course.
WOW has nothing like what I've described above, in fact, you can play on a PVE server in WOW and avoid PVP entirely. Not true in AION. Even on WOW's PVP servers the open world combat is quite limited because there is very little reward for it vs the instanced combat provided by the BGs' and arenas.
It might be true what some folks say, that players will only level up their AP in PVE zones, but I suspect there will be rewards for fighting in the Abyss that won't be available to those who avoid it, thus some portion of folks will always be drawn to it.
AION also has open world keeps to fight over which impart bonuses to the faction that holds them, which is somewhat similar to what WOW provides except w/o the instancing.

Difference is, Aion dumbed things down even more and made items even easier to aquire.

What game isn't?
1. After playing with aiming in chronicles of spellborn I can't really play with tab targeting any more. I'm done with that. It's crap - time to move on. Aiming is actually easier than franticly hitting tab or trying to click on a target.
2. If I'm going to play an RPG, I need massive diversity in character build options. I'm talking skills not just equipment. I don't know but I here Aion's skill system is very simple.
