Unfortunately, WoW is currently the status quo. It is the most ubiquitous and notorious example of the MMO - and so, whether it deserves it or not, all new MMO's are inevitably compared with it. For other MMO producers this makes Blizzard and WoW "public enemy #1."
Not true. From a publisher point of view, World of Warcraft is golden epitome of financial and main stream success that all other MMOs can only hope to get an inkling of.
From a player point of view, oppinions are as legion as the amount of players. Some will put on the full hate behavior, others will simply shrug and accept other people have different tastes.
No publisher worth his salt is unaware of the fact that they in large part own their entire potential customer base to Blizzard. Before Blizzard MMOs were niche and geeky, now they are mainstream and the topic of discussion over coffee at offices all over the world.
What's not true? You repeated what I said with different words. Ubiquitous - widespread. Notorious - well known. Clearly it's the "golden epitome of financial and main stream success."

Naturally this makes WoW the game to beat - public enemy #1. We're on the same wavelength here.
Woo Hoo! Fame bait...I'll bite... Pretend? Who needs to pretend the game is no good?
QFT. I've played several of the beta weekends and there is no need to pretend. The only pretending going on is that this game is somehow better than any other F2P Asian game and deserves a monthly fee.
And the WoW community? I played WoW for around a year and I never once saw a person with a name like Dickbutt. But I have in Aion.= )
lol i think that goes to show your a complete liar . you cant not play warcraft without seeing players with stupid childish names . admitedly i never saw a dickbutt but i ve seen a shitty , a fartpower , pownu , bigknob and a felch in my time .and thats the tip of a very big ice burg in warcraft .
on a side note have you ever noticed how many death knights names include the word death in thier name .
In the first Aion beta weekend, I saw "Wifebeater" and "Playwithmycu*t". I pretty much decided right there that this would be overrun by kiddies and immature adults. No thanks. But...I managed to get through the third beta weekend before giving up on Aion altogether.
All gaming communties suck - because they are full of folk who spend most of their time in the basement and are shunned by normal society.
The majority of gamers are over the age of 35, and are fat and depressed because they fail at real life - the infamous recent survey made this claim.
I have played a lot of MMO's and have made very few 'friends' because of the above facts. I tend to enjoy the games on offer, whilst avoiding other players whenever possible, and gaming companies have cottoned on onto what is happening hence the growing soloablility of this genre.
I don't know exactly when this tide turned, but I would lay most of the blame at Blizzard's door, for creating a game an intellectually challenged amoeba could play.

The most important part of growing up is learning to respect others. Apparently you missed that step.
And perhaps the real reason that you don't make friends is because you are a condescending bastard, lacking the empathy to understand people and being too ignorant to understand their situations. These people that you seem to hate so much are human beings, living in this world whether you like it or not. Despite their lack of intelligence, ambition, elation or any other quality that you despise, they are people and you will either learn to at least show them respect or you will be the one that is shunned by normal society.
As for your final comment, I've met more than a few very intelligent people of varying professions that play WoW. From physicists to medical doctors.
All this said, if there really is a problem with MMO communities, I'd consider it to be one of disrespect and hate.

Yep, I agree completely. I remember back in EQ1, you couldn't say anything on the message boards without getting flamed by at least a few dozen people even if you were just asking a question. Since then, pretty much every message board I have went to for whatever game I am playing is just full of hate. Although, I would say that the hate has started changing from flaming other players to flaming the developers more and more, in recent years.

This game is awful. Now go back to WoW....that is all...
