Cant really compare any of todays MMOs with WoW it was launched during a golden age for the internet with pretty much 9/10 households having a computer then to top it off unlike most MMO's it works on pretty much anything no powerful hardware required to play it.

Id think Final Fantasy XI & EVE would be the two closest to it.

if i'm correct i believe guild wars had a couple million subs a while back, not totally sure but if so that would be the closest. then i would suspect lotro would be the next with selling over a million copies of the game, not sure how many actual subs they have currently. then i would guess either warhammer or everquest.

What do you mean by success?

If you talk about profit and number of players, then only Lineage and Aion come to mind.

Eve Online and Everquest if you look at the West only.

You are not correct, Guild Wars does not have subs, they only sold a certain amount of copies.

In the past, I agree with Everquest, if you only look at the western market.

    Warhammer not at all.

LOTRO, it is a good game and has a solid subscriber base, but nothing special. If you look at long lasting appeal and subcsription numbers then you have to add EVE Online to the list, it is currently also the number 2, premium mmorpg in the west.

Also take note of Dofus and Runescape.

I would say Everquest.  At that time the actual computer users venturing into the online world of gaming;  I would think EQ took a lot of that up.  With UO and EQ setting the path for online gaming, more people became aware of what MMORPG's were and today  more people game  than what could never have been expected back in 1999.

your right about guild wars but don't they still have around a couple million people playing even if there is no subscription? found this link on the net http://www.dbtechno.com/gaming/2008/02/27/guild-wars-mmo-grows-tops-5-million-subscribers/

not sure how accurate that is, but if so then it competes as one of the top games with largest player bases. anyways i believe back in the old days everquest had around 500k-750k subs which at the time was the largest player base out there.

Discounting any Free to Play games as they really don't have subs so much as users... I'd say that if you're talking world-wide it would be Lineage followed closely by Lineage II... In just the west it would be the original EQ as in it's hay day it topped 550k subs.
