Voice Chat in MMOs

ScarisScaris Member UncommonPosts: 5,332

I have tried many different clients to do VoIP while gaming so I can talk voice to my whole group instead of having to type. GOD has it changed my gaming this last year.

I started out with a MS Gamevoice, that at first was wonderful, but MS refuses to put out decent software for it now and from what I have seen dropped support on it more or less, plus it was alot of extra clutter on my desk.

I then went to roger wilco, which seemed great at first, until I started using it awhile, the server software has issues and the client does as well. Finally I gave up on it and have gone to ventrilo. I have been using it for sometime now, have my own server dedicated to hosting it for my friends to connect to while we game, and it has run relatively flawless.

My point is, is anyone else doing this and what are you using? So far vent is the best I have found but I am sure there are others, anything better out there?

Me and my brother both signed up for AO and diecided that teamspeak was good for us, cool features like different channels on a single server and it worked good.

    it's free ::::02::

I have never heard of that one, I will have to check it out. The one downfall to vent is you need to host your own server for it, which isnt hard, you just have to set the service to load on your machine. Vent supports mutiple channel and subchannel, ops, etc.

I will have to take a look at teamspeak. I have yet to ever group with anyone that I didnt know and be able to voice with them while I play. I think many sway from it myself, makes it too "real" for them and they prefer the text interface. God it makes the gaming so much nicer though, I can pull mobs and not have to hotkey a pull message, I can just annouce it, etc.

I will check out teamspeak, thanks for the input.

    No prob mate.

While team chat in mmorpgs adds alot, i don't think it should ever be implemented for non- guild/team use.
Simply due to the overwheaming rubbish you can bet some griefer will play/say.

    * teamspeak also needs you to host a server

no, but it would be dam nice if when you get grouped you have the innate option in the game to go voice chat. I beleive a few new ones up and coming are working on that.

sure, it's a possebility. But RPGs ain't the real thing for quick voice chat like fps.. True it's fun to have a voice chat .. But I think Team Speak is just easy or some kind of voice chat plug in could be posibble.. well you know what to do ;) ..

Been using teamspeak for a bit now and like it.  I have had a couple games that seemed more prone to locking up with it, but not excessively and may have been coincidental.  I believe it works on Linux boxes also and plan to put it on mine for when I'm not on a windows game.

    Have used:

    - Roger Wilco
    - Team Speak
    - Ventrilo (Currently using this one.)

All have strong and weak points.

Bottom Line, Find one you like and stay with it.

Voice Chat while in game was invaluable to one of my one teams when it came to winning games.

Not having to "stop and type" lets the game progress much much better.

I'm using teamspeak a lot these days. It works great together with Eve-Online and is a must if you join in fleetbattles and pvp. It helps you concentrate more on essential parts then on typing in what the next target is and so on. Think is can also provide great help in other MMORPGs.

It is not because you play fps you need quick voicecommunication, that you don't need it in MMORPGs. If you want to work as a team, what lots of mmorpgs encourage, you need fast communication. And most games out there work with keyboard and mouse to control. So if you can communicat through voice you are more effective.

Teamspeak is good and has his pro but as well as its contra, same goes for vurtigo. Never used that last one realy so can't say much about it. But think both programs are nice to use. ::::32::

i use ventrilo and teamspeak, of the two i prefer ventrilo - but that may just be limitations of my setup .. not sure.

many consider voice coms a must for pvp in eve, and i would say it does alot for making our group more closenit.

We use Yahoo voice conferencing a lot.  It's free, works reasonably well, and there's no server to host. Not as many options as things like Teamspeak, but for single groups it's quite good.
