Things are quiet in LotrO right now because Turbine is abot to re-launch DDO so their marketing/community people are working on that.

What we know is that Mirkwood with Dol Guldur (saurons old fortress) is coming this year. A new type of dynamic instances is coming called "Skirmishes". There will be a new level cap increase. Lone lands is getting a revamp. The radiance system and Legendary items systems are getting revamps aswell.

No release dates, hopefully we will get more news after DDO:Unlimted releases.

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

I know the plan was originally to bring out an xpac this year, but I have to believe they are behind schedule.  They've had trouble bringing out new out content lately that hasn't been full of bugs.  If the xpac was coming out this year I'd expect them to start marketing it.  At this time last year they were feeding us information about Moria.  So I'm guessing early next year... Maybe around the same time as Cataclysm lol

Actually the reason for there not being any big announcement yet might have more to do with complicated legal matters than anything.

    From a filmpress website:

The bottom line is that the Tolkien family claims that they’re owed $220m from New Line to cover back profit payments from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The family heirs are suing New Line claiming breach of contract, and as part of the suit are asking to recover all further film rights to Tolkein’s work. If that somehow went through, The Hobbit film (as currently set up at new Line and MGM) would be toast. (www.slashfilm.com)

Basically for those who were unaware, there has been very very nasty set of lawsuits and legal battles going on since the new round of movies came out, centered around Saul Zentz.

(from www.film-book.com): Saul Zaentz, who acquired the film rights to the “’Lord of the Rings’ novels, as well as ‘The Hobbit,’ in 1976 from United Artists. In 1997, Zaentz entered into a license agreement with Miramax to produce and distribute a ‘Rings’ trilogy.

Somehow, and I admit I have never followed the legal chicanery invovled, but good 'ole Saul managed to somehow parley that movie right into a blanket take over of the Tolkien IP and ruthlessly crushed Iron Crown Enterprises (publishers of a pen and paper ME game) as well as every last art, fiction and fan website or organization that he could find a way to serve "cease and desist" orders too - over the objections of the Tolkien Trust. The Tolkien heirs and trust have been waging an active campaign to get the IP back on several fronts since then.

This game  - is produced and run under that license from Zaentz.

Now, personally this latest round looks like just a wrangle over money and I don't see any way that the "ebil" Zaentz folks are going to lose the license or anything as a result of this suit (in fact they may even profit, lol) but I'm not an intellectual property lawyer either.

All this is slated to play out in California courts, early in October.

Since LotrO have nothing to do with the movie license I dont think that is the problem.

Turbine have said that they want to release DDO:Unlimited before talking more about the next expansion for LotrO. They also have their next MMO whihc is supposed to be announced this fall.

I hope the expansion doesnt come untill feb/marsh next year and book 9 with mirkwood/Dold gudlur between now and then.

Sorry, that's simply not true. LotRO is licensed directly from Saul Zaentz, LLC which "only" holds the movie license from the Tolkien Estate. Zentz lawyers were able to parley that into control of the entire IP somehow in ways I honestly don't comprehend entirely - not being an IP lawyer and all. However, Zaentz entire ability to sub-license *anything* related to Middle-Earth derives entirely from that original movie license and their subsequent legal maneuverings.

So, while I admit it is unlikely from this case, if Zaentz were to lose the license, it could very well directly impact Turbines license to run LotRO.

Now that said, it's likely that Turbines other releases have more to do with it...but the legal wrangling could be part of the issue.

Also, it would be in keeping with past LotRO Book releases to have Book 9 coincide with the "Fall" festival in game and be launched around Halloween.

And lo, here is the expected announcement:

    forums.lotro.com/showthread.php

It's Mirkwood, with a level cap raise to 65, but it is considered the conclusion to MoM Volume 2.

It's digital download only, so a boxed expansion isn't making it this year. So, any guesses when Rohan arrives in 2010?

Irony is when you predict an expansion to be delayed until next year, only to have a news release coming out 8 hrs later proving you wrong....

Wow, so they are charging for Book 9?... 2 free updates this year? That's gonna piss off a lot of people I bet.

just that they suddenly want money for a new book that is part of a boxed expansion.

    Wow.

This actually has me more excited than Cataclysm. Oh yeah, we'll just revamp Azeroth so STV becomes a lava-filled wasteland and Desolace becomes a jungle paradise... that makes sense. Worgen, Goblins... whoop-de-do. Gnome Priests? Give me a break. OH BUT WE GET TO FIGHT DEATHWING YAAAAAAAAY! Not really.

    But this stuff looks awesome.

    OMG Turbine WHY???

I will not have time to play both LotrO and DDO as much as I like and now this!

Really exciting news, much more than I expected :)

I thought Turbine was above this. Making us pay for one new zone, a whole 5 instances, 5 more levels, the Skirmish system and some little bells and whistles. Be better to release the instances free and make it 10 new levels, the skirmish system, Mirkwood, and some other zone.

I can't justify paying for so little content though, that's a really sad feature list for a paid expansion.

I'm not sure exactly what feels great about this expansion?  Sounds like a few (3) 3 player instances, a few 6 player instances, and a new raid.  Aside from that they're just making Legendary weapons a little stronger, and increased the player cap.  Overall not too much in terms of the new features, but we'll have to see how this soldier game works itself into the game.  A little dissapointed to be honest.  I quit LOTRO and was waiting for the expansion to come back, but I'm not sure that is going to happen with this one...

I highly doubt this.  If you remember when Moria came out, Book 15 was also released.  However you still got Book 15 (and Eregion) even if you decided not to buy Moria.

I'm happy to hear about the expansion but very sad that's it's a digital download only:(

We got a HUGE influx of new players with the MoM expansion because the box was ON the shelves in stores. My server is just as packed now as it was at launch because they pulled in so many new folks last Fall with MoM.

That won't happen this time:( I really love Turbine's games but their marketing dept. sure does leave a lot to be desired. Maybe they will see the huge difference in "new subs" from last expansion to this one and do it right with the rest of the yrly expansions. The box on the shelves is a NECESSITY if you want the game to continue to grow and thrive.
