Yes. There are levels. At 10 points along each level you get AP points to use to up skills or Attibutes (5 AP per point of attribute, 1 point per for skills). Each skill has 2 linked Attibutes. The attribute scores determine a minimum skill score (which automatically adjust up when the 2 linked attributes resort in a higher minimum score) and a maximum skill score (you have to put AP points in to raise it toward the maximum). That's for Active skills. Tradeskills go up through actual use. You can't put AP in them to raise them. Mutations are based on one attribute (I believe) and you have to put AP into them to raise them.
I really love the idea of this game, but after watching gameplay videos I have to say that Im less than impressed at not only the client performance, but how loose and unpolished combat itself feels... Footage from september first, mind you.
Despite this Im still tempted, for some reason. Maybe it doesnt play as bad as it looks? Maybe itll be good? Im thinking this irrationally due to boredom, probably.

Go with your gut feeling, if your gut is saying, don't do it, well don't do it. There is also CO that is already out and Aion has a Open Beta this week. If your bored u can still get it thru fileplanet (unless they distributed all the keys).
It is hard to compare FE to any other game out on the market now, because there really isnt anything like it. All I can say is that the schedule release date is Sept 22nd (I believe that same day as Aion) however Aion and this game are not relatively the same.
FE is a independant company from North Carolina, USA (Icarus Studios) that make their own game engine for FE, so we wont see any Unreal or Farcry engine being used. Some of the graphics do need some love and since its there game engine, things will be twinked as months go by, but this exaggeration that ppl say it -- that it reminds them of a game in the 90's is utter BS.
As I said many times, if your into games like Anarchy Online, SWG, Neocron and Eve Online, you may like this game. The game is complexed for some if all you have played was theme park mmorpgs.
If you like crafting, socializing and open world exploring, this game is for you. However, heres the list.
A. Vechicles / Mounts .. ATV's Motorcycles, Dune Buggys, Jeeps and even some that have weapons built on.
B. FPS style combat that is pretty damn tough to get used to. I was never a fan of MMOFPS.
C. Open World, so far they got 3 Sectors and each Sector provides levels of difficulties S1 = Levels 1 to 15 .. S2 = 15 to 30 .. S3 = 30 to 45. There talking about having 7 more sectors in future expansions with a level cap of 150 (but this isnt confirmed as of yet).
D. Skill Base System - Stats, Tradeskills Etc..
E. PvP (there is no FFA PvP or Full PvP servers) Its more like Warhammer where certain areas are PvP enabled. However the PvP in this game gets pretty intense to where you can even shoot fellow players that you dont mean to. Once your in a PvP zone, your game for anyone. In the PvP zones you will be harvesting Nodes to create better weapons and gear for crafting.
F. Crafting levels as well, so say for instance you dont want to go out and kill or run jobs, just start crafting, you can level just off of crafting if thats your gig, but it isnt that fast, but at least your leveling. You can have up to 20 items qued in your crafting and still go out and do quests or even sign off for the night and come back the next day with your items already completed (crafting offline). 95% of all the items in game can be crafted. So if your a crafter, you going to love this game, because honestly, many people dont like to craft and just buy whats on the AH.
G. 6 Faction to choose from!
With all do respect, the game does have some bugs when I last played (Sept 1, 2009), but nothing to where is game isnt playable. If your still on the fence with FE, then hold out for a month or 2, or better yet try next year when some of the bugs are worked out. I am going to say people like me that sign on the 9th, yeah we may deal with some bugs here and there, but I believe anyone that has pre-ordered knows what they are getting into.
The game has potential in my opinion and the people at (FE) are definitely very nice and professional.
This will be my main game for a long time since we dont have many Sandbox MMORPGS out there for now.
Anyways, Goodluck!
Here are some good Podcasts if you dont want to read and just listen.
Is it the quests? last time I checked every sandbox had some type of mission/quest system in place.
Also a game doesn't need to be FFA pvp with full loot to be considered a sandbox game.
I would love to know why people consider this a themepark?
You mean sandbox Remii?
A "sandbox" is simply a game which is player driven. You are given the rules and the limits and then you can shape your game world within those confines. Some games, even sandboxes, give you more "sand" than others, "sand" being a metaphor for player control (i.e. the ability of players to affect the game world).
That being said, there are certain game mechanics which have come to be nearly synonymous with "sandbox" like skill based advancement, open PvP, and other design decisions which generally emphasize player liberty.

No we have a couple people in the thread saying only the crafting is sandbox and the rest is themepark.
Maybe they're trolls? I assumed FE would be a sandbox all the way.

The reason for the debate is probably because it incorporates both types of play. Lots of elements are sand box style but many missions are typical theme park ones you'll find in any mmorpg.
Originally posted by Mrbloodworth The game is incredibly sand-boxy, from crafting, to skills/stats use. Yes, there are also quests so it is like the best of both worlds, but most allow you to finish it any way you want. There is open world PvP, you just didn't get there. Not sure how you could call it a fallout knock off, unless fallout if your ONLY point of reference for post-apocalyptic settings. Because it feels like, a post-apocalyptic world, that has its own take on that setting.
I pre-ordered but its too late for me to get in on the OB, just the head start. It seems sort of Anarchy Online-ish to me by the crafting, engine, and environments - am I off the mark?

Yeah, thanks for the suggestions but as someone who can read and as someone who has tried Aion, both games are equally awful. I missed out on the golden age of Sandbox titles; so it would be nice to play a sandbox game that doesn't have terrible gameplay... Or maybe it just looks awful and is just really fun: though it's hard to think this as I watch videos of some guy aiming perfectly at an enemies head, only to have it fail to hit three times for no clear reason (Despite the fact that there are supposedly no RPG Dice rolls for accuracy).
I appreciate the spirit and what they're trying to do, but part of being a competent developer is knowing your limits; and this project is clearly beyond their current capabilities.
And did I forget to mention this game runs on the same engine that Starwars Galaxies uses?
Maybe you forgot to mention it because it wasn't true. This game has flaws, there's no need to make stuff up.
Feels like a FPS, with an RPG back-end (except for aim) with a touch of fallout, SWG, and a heap of exploration.
This game tickles my crafting, exploration, indi, SWG-PreCU, and twitch places, and has me excited about its PvP play.
I think this is possibly the best iteration of a FPS/RPG combat system hybrid I have ever come across, better than Tabula Rasa, better than ######## ######. I really enjoy that aim has only you to blame and not random roles. Despite it being a bit rough around the edges.
lol, i like the hermit crab with the computer moniter
game looks bland graphically but i like that it is actually doing something different, not another fantasy mmorpg
but i never liked FO3 so i dont think il like this. i am not a fan of the post apocalyptic theme

You can see a character planner here. Globaltech Atlas.

March on! - Lets Invade Pekopon
I give the FE devs credit for delivering a sandbox game.
It takes alot of balls to go in a different direction than virtually every other developer on the market.
FE is pretty good and just needs a few months of bug squishing and polish.
I'll be back in six months or so.
