Blizzard's revenue for 2007  before they merged with Activision, 1.2Billion

thats Blizzard... not WoW... the single game.,.. and now start subtracting the yearly salaries of all of its employee's, the costs of all of it's offices, electronics, and bills.  This discussion was over WOW and RuneScape not Blizzard vs Runescape... l2r

WoW by itself does make more than $1 billion a year. WoW makes more than $100 million a month.

it made 1 billion in a quarter with activision and only over 100 mill is profit... much lower than the guy above was saying... l2r when you research. Still above Runescape a FREE GAME but its blizzard... they are like the EA sports of MMO's and they only have 1....

You DO know a quarter is 3 months right? And according to your link, they are on track to make 4 billion at the END of the year........of which WoW will be responsible for 1 billion of it.

"The company recorded a net profit of $195 million for the quarter."

780Million a year in profits is a healthy chunk of 1 Billion. Especially they are claiming a decrease in revenue.

Do you feel educated when you mark revenue as profit ? Total Revenue is the sum of what the company makes... profit is whats left over after all the bills are paid... You think Only World of Warcraft profits 195 million and the only entities are just money wells that never profit? No of course not... or they wouldnt be in existance... Activision with all of its games makes a FATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT load of that 195 million per quart guy... and they estimated next quarter will be less than the current.

...unless they mean the other definition of "big" (game world size :P )

They should've specified: It's the world's biggest browser based free MMO. If you're going to make the argument that FarmVille is an MMO, I'm going to laugh.

Alright, we'll take 2nd on the list: Mafia Wars.  PVE, PVP, advancement choices, classes.  The businesses could even be considered crafting.

Whether or not you feel they're good games (they're not), they're still MMOs.

I don't even care that much whether you call em MMOs, my gripe was with Jagex claiming they had the world's biggest free game :P  Unless they mean world size, they don't have the biggest free game.

Blizzard's revenue for 2007  before they merged with Activision, 1.2Billion

The companies are not in the same league

thats Blizzard... not WoW... the single game.,.. and now start subtracting the yearly salaries of all of its employee's, the costs of all of it's offices, electronics, and bills.

"The company recorded a net profit of $195 million for the quarter."

780Million a year in profits is a healthy chunk of 1 Billion. Especially they are claiming a decrease in revenue.

Your comparing BLIZZARD to RUnescape not WOW... go figure Activision... makes money too...Diablo still makes money, Starcraft still makes money

Revenue vs. profit............company vs. game..........whatever. You can try to turn this argument around to suit what ever subject you THINK Blizzard, WoW or Activition would lose on based on Jagex and Runescape. But the bottom line is neither their game nor their company is generating ANY close to what WoW alone is pulling. I could give two shits about if it's profits or not. It's been told to you that WoW's upkeep cost are about 200 million for the last 4 years and they bring in 75-100 million and MONTH through WoW subs. And that number smokes ANYTHING a free browser based mmo can pull.....

But don't let me deter you from your number crunching/argument points.....eventually you'll find a formula/outcome that works in your favor.......lol

You obviously lack the comprehension to thoroughly read what i've said. In the end I was debating the relevant differences of said argument Profits to Revenue but I even said in a post that Jagex released no official records and it's just speculation from a comment here or there. That if a Jagex employee actually said "We make as much as WoW" That they are wrong but it's not 1 billion to 45 millions... its more like 33 million to 200 million. For a free game thats stellar but it's not WoW. So I will continue to extend my comment "Get off Blizzards Electronics testicles"

    But what do you mean?

I mean you spent so much time arguing about WoW's finances that you completely ignored the fact I already said theres no way Jagex makes as much yet I simply corrected how people were doing the comparisons kind of like I was giving them business lessons correcting how they view it. I explained how advertising works and then I made them realize theres a difference from revenue and profit and guess what most people understood and moved on yet not you... you kept going unable to comprehend the words in front of you...

    Oh well GG.

P.S. Blizzard lied about the cost of WoW from 2004-2008, their financial records doesn't back that 200 million claim very well as they would make a lot more profit if that were the case.

And I say: "Stop staring at Blizzards Electronics anus."

    But what do you mean?

I mean you spend so much time trying to debunk the financial worth of WoW, that you pretty much folded on your cost vs profit ratios for each game and now resort to thinking that I'm hanging on their electronic genitals. Players like you spend far too much time chasing after WoW and staring at their anus, that it is no wonder that you assume that those in front are hanging on by the testies to keep up. I have no need to divulge into lessons of Gaming Economics 101: Ratios.

No I rather keep it as simple as the OP offered in his quoted topic: Does Runescape make as much money as WoW.....NO! Plain and simple. No need to try to confuse the lad.

I actually stop playing WoW back in April (Rhomeo-Mannoroth) and have sinced moved on. But I do look forward to enjoying Diablo III and Cata when they are released. But I think they accept cash now, not sexual favors.

Chill out guys, I didn't make this thread to say runescape is the best or anything. The main point was that they started off as an indie company and now are one of the top companies MMO wise, if you don't like the game its alright.

Not really a fan of WoW and never played Runescape.

However, I would be willing to bet if we were to get ahold of finances they don't come anywhere near WoW in terms of money.  Which is basicly the title of this thread so I went to take a look.

I see a lot of threads about WoW especially ones about how many subs they have versus claimed etc...  Yet the one thing I note is the financial statements (which for Vivendi... blizzard/activision... obviously we all know where most of that money comes from).

Did you happen to see the 6 months sales release that came out a bit ago...

Far as I'm concerned both of these games could be equally good and its all about perspective on subjective material.  However, when you bring financials into the picture.. those are not subjective.

Tailz - Blizzard as a company no longer exists. Blizzard is a division of Activision Blizzard which is owned by Vivendi SA.

In the financial reports revenues are not broken down by Blizzard made games and Activision made games, they are broken down by platform, like PS3 or Wii.

One of the revenue platforms is MMORPG. Activision Blizzard only has 1 MMORPG which is WoW.

So, if the MMORPG platform generated $324 million in revenue in the previous quarter then that means WoW by itself made $324 million in revenue in the previous quarter.

Also, yes, that is revenue and not profit. As it turns out running the second biggest video game company in the world(only Nintendo makes more money) takes quite a bit.

This is why I told you "Learn to research" but you failed at it. Good job.

I do indeed consider runescape a "bigger" game than WoW when it comes to player base.

Even if WoW has 500 times the number of people runescape still trumps out on the pure and simple fact that in runescape all the servers are connected,  where as on WoW you have some trillion little islands that are servers that might as well not exsist at all after you log in(except for the one you're logged into).

    ________

As for profit I can see runescape pulling in some impressive numbers.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

    Yes, very true.

runescape would be a decent game if it's community wasn't so crap.

As for pulling in more than WoW...yeah get real.  If they were then i'd expect a whole lot more from this company.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

The claim that they make more $ befuddles me :/

Runescape has never had 10m players .. LMAO! They topped off at like 6m, and then lost over half of that when they ruined the game with terrible updates. On top of this the 2.4m visitors are not even all playing the game or paying for memberships. One thing Jagex is very good at is being dishonest with both the community and their player base.

People seem to love runescape, honestly I would rather just resub to UO. In its current state its superior in every way.

    PLaying: EvE, Ryzom

    Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

This guy from Jagex couldn't be more full of crap.

There is no way, on this earth, that Runescape even comes close to WoW. I'm pretty sure the WoW Mountain Dew budget is higher than Runescape's gross income.

And all this nonsense about registered users is just that. Anyone who has ever played Runescape knows that probably 80% of accounts were made by gold farmers.

Runescape is what it is, it has been successful in it's niche and more power to the folks at Jagex for it. But to make brain-dead claims like that... sheesh.

Wait I thought Perfect world had over 50 million players? Or was it Runes of Magic? I remember seeing something on the front page here about it.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

or jagex rep in his haed is correct but underestimate how much wow profit it does

say we just divide by 2 the number of player advertise it around 5 million x 15$ a month

thats min 75 million a month

jagex might receive that yes but probably in a year

    THIS^

The need to compete with wow has passed desperation and has landed squarely in the world of deluded idiocy.

I know a lot of people who play Runescape, actually.  It's very popular amongst the college and high school crowd, even a bit younger.  Older people don't play this game as much.  I know some do, but it's more of a younger person's game.  I personally hate that damn browser garbage.  Play a real F2P like Runes of Magic or Perfect World.

The math just doesn't add up for them to make as much as WoW, but I suppose as long as a person says "possibly" in front of ridiculous sayings then they can't be lying. So based on that theory, I make possibly as much as blizzard does each year I just hide myself from Forbes so the secret won't get out.

I tried runescape one time and couldn't stand it at all, which is why I've always been surprised by the millions who play it. But I guess the fact that it was one of the first free MMOs (if not the first) and it ran in a browser, made the entry level so low and easy that some people just stuck with it.

Why dont we make a site for those who have to compare WoW to everything out there.  Walmart had coke on sale for .50 but I am sure someone read or saw WoW had it cheaper or sold more.   Go figure!

Then tell the dimwits at Jagex not to initiiate the comparison.
