I dont select on races as much as on classes

However Here is a graph  on which races players play most From the MMO character Monument site. Obviously highly skewed toward the WoW races. Still so many players prefer humans over anything else

What happened to just "human" and nothing else?

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

I love Orcs. But something original would be cool. sick of traditional fantasy races all the time.

they're all from existing games or upcoming games. They haven't been mishmashed together randomly.

Mostly none-humans but of course depends on the game, if a game lets me make a human that resambles allot like me in rl then I take a human, but most of the times I want to be something else than what I am in rl and besides I play so many genre of games that in most I already play a human, but have to admit that I do have a little problem if a game onlt provides "white" human as I want to see diversity among humans.

The fanboism in me made me pick Anarchy Online races.

I'm always split when it comes to races.  On one hand I prefer fewer-but-different races, where your race selection matters.

On the other hand, having a decision you make at the 2-minute mark in a game matter throughout the entire rest of the game is a recipe for disaster most of the time.  I recall the first year or two on my WOW orc shaman, where orc didn't have many benefits (the stun/incapacitate bonus was mainly it.)

As a result, it's tricky to get right (although I voted for the Dragon set, as it seemed to have the most interesting variety of choices.)

Maybe I'll end up prefering Champions/COX, where there aren't races at all and instead you can create whatever human or alien creature you can imagine (as long as the character generator lets you make it.)

It is the games implementation of cultures that is important, not the races. You could have three human cultures which were better than twenty fantasy ones if they were done right.

But fantasy races do have a more immediate cultural hook. It is just that they can be terrible clichés and people expect certain stereotypes that are not always true.

For example your D&D Dwarf is nigh on a alcoholic, loves a bar fight and swears like a trooper. This is the prevalent Dwarf concept in MMO’s. But Tolkein’s Dwarf was not like that, they are quite reserved and proper. So although they like a fight, a bar brawl would seem a bit common to them. Heavy drinking in non Dwarven company and swearing would be frowned on. LOTRO stuck well to Tolkein’s vision, but elements of the D&D standard did creep in.

So the important thing is, not how many races there are, but to make sure we are not just playing the same races again and again even if they have different names.

Long as it has dwarves, I'm happy.

Just something about the angry little drunken pot-bellied bearded buggers that appeals to me.

    Easiest poll to date!

Lugian, human, Tonk, Drugde, Empyrian are the coolest race set every created. Original, fluffy and very well visually designed :)

Anything non-human or Elf / Dwarf.  The all standbys are boring already in MMOs;)  Been there done that.  give me insects, lizards, aliens, ANYTHING that doesn't have 2 arms and legs with long ears.  A good Orc is still ok, because at least its monsterous and has a different posture than your typcial 5-8 humanoid.

    Hey, question.

Which game are these from on your poll?

    Dragons,Dryads,Dwarves,Elves,Fiends, Gnomes, Half-Giants,Humans,Saris,Satyrs,Ssilk

I read through all the options and without even knowing what game the above is from it appealed to me the most, probably because of the large and VERY diverse variety, what are the last 3 as well?

    O_o o_O

I believe those races are from the game that used to be called Horizons, now its called Istaria: Chronicles of the Gifted.

What about Shadowbanes races? Centuars, Aracroix etc, It had some pretty awesome races.

I chose DAOC races in the poll though. Out of all that was available I thought they have the most unique, varied and interesting race selection.

I would still love to see anthropomorphic Griffins as a playable race in future games. And more Centaur as a playable race :)
