To the OB and pre-order guys currently playing:
Is the game fairly bug free currently, or is it better to hold off a little while for the post release bug-squashing and general tweaking?
Comments
I pre-ordered, I'm currently in head start. I would hold off, I should have. Way too many bugs and clunky combat problems that need fixing.
The Adventures of Fat Gamer - http://www.mmorpg.com/blogs/FatGamer
The game has rubberbanding effects in the well populated areas (Midway and South Burb). I did'nt have much of that problem once I left the populated areas. (at least for me and my computer).
There are bugs in the game still, but nothing real serious that makes it unplayable. If your going in as a fan, you will overlook alot of the flaws, but if your going in like a spring chicken, well then I would hold off.
On another note (FFE LLC - Icarus Studios) gave its playerbase almost 2 extra weeks of gameplay, making a total of 43 days of game play till I get a charge on my CC account.
Launch isn't till Sept 22nd and I love the free time they are giving there pre-launch playerbase despite the bugs.
it depends if you can't put up with the bugs and occasional performance issue that always go with a launch then wait a few months, but if you can deal with those than i say go ahead now. The issues they currently have is no worse than any other mmo launch i've been involved with including WOW, EQ2, EVE Online, LOTRO to name a few.
Most issues right now is due to server load which causes mob/player rubberbanding, animation issues. Once the pop has spread out of the newbie areas i think this will go away. I'm sure it's pretty hard for a server to have 500+ players in one section alone like midway last night, South Burb had 400+ at one time in the area, not sure about other starting towns.
I played AoC from release, so bugs don't bother me too much
I might just join from fairly early on then, depending on how much free time I have.
Thanks for the advice guys!
Come play bugs and all, they will get kinked out.
jump in its great yeah there bug but not like OMG bugs, but ever mmo has bugs right? the GM are always willing to help and the people in new player chat are very helpful.
IN THE FACE!
I've experienced mob rubberbanding, and CTD's when I entered areas that were heavily populated. Otherwise, everything is normal as far as FE is concerned. As for industry standard, FE is different. Not bad different or good different, but just different. No matter who you ask, they'll tell you that it has a learning curb. You should know what you're doing after a few days, but the first few days will be brutal. If you like a challenge, you'll make it through. If you don't like a challenge, then you better stick to the mainstream games.
To answer the real question, if you have any interest in FE, then there's no reason to hold off. Aside from the learning curb, the worst thing that you'll encounter is the CTD's, but that's something every game experiences at release. They are improving stability with short 30min downtimes here and there. Nothing too inconveniencing.
I actually recommend getting in now with headstart, which you still can do, because it'll give you 12 more days to get further into the game where the population will be less of an issue than it will if FE has a average MMO launch. Average in MMO numbers I mean.
if you are a veteran id hold off as you will be dissapointed in the content it is very generic as far as MMOs go
if you are fairly new to MMOs and can deal with the standard release problems then ya id say go ahead.
some pointers for starting players:...
first i sugest south burb its kind of a farming community with lots of resources and excelent crafting quests to get you up to speed even the combat players should consider starting here. also it has excelent zone position just north of mumford to the south,, and there is a very nice sweep northward through many of the major towns and their flavor of quest and skills there is no facton worries in S1 you can goto all of the towns on the whole map you cannot "screw up"
next upon exiting the pod you got some points to spend.. get your armor melee and rifle (and/or pistol) skill to 15
15 30 45 60 ect are "sweetspots" its better to push 1 score to 30 than 3 scores to 25 as 25 dont get you nothing
learn at least the basic (11$) skills in all the crafts even if your a combat type at least get the crafts in your log
there are 3 harvest skills (mining harvest ore and minerals) (scavanging harvest refuse materials and junk tech) (nature harvest plants and animals)
at skill level 15 you can wear your first armor torso:duster and legs: chaps
at melee 15 next tier weapons i prefer the 2h ax handle but some prefer to duel weild knives you can hotkey ax handle easily
at rifle skill 15 you can equip next level in crossbow (crossbows become obsolete at level 60 when you can equip the scoped magnum rifle (non scoped is expensive and inaccurite)
endever to get your horse as soon as possible you can buy one our craft one (the books are on the nature vender) it effectivly doubles your travel speed and adds some cargo feed/fuel completely refills the endurance bar
in S2 map sone (at about 20) factons become important if you want to pick up all the mutant powers or facton gear you must "spin the wheel" and it becomes harder the higher facton you get so pick your prefered faction... (factons are very watery so most pick enforcer since guns are important to the game and they got the best skills and trainers) then pick the facton beside it to work twords kill their enemy till you become "nonagro" gain 1000 facton which is like 1-2 quests then you can get acces to the mutation quests and basic facton gear (travelers got a +12 scavange tool,, enforcers got regen item ect) then once you complete the 1-2-3 mutation quests move to the next around the wheel gaining just enough facton to get whet you need,, finishing the wheel back at your prefered facton now you have the trinkets and like all 11 mutations. (it takes ALOT of work later in the game as for every 1 point you gain with 1 faction you loose 2-3 with their enemy meaning you have to kill massive more to change the factons.
and lastly.. combat exp and crafting exp go into the SAME POOL so you really want to be crafting all the time for best advancement. (oh gun ammo becomes really important later in the game so mine copper lead,, science for gunpowder and gunmaking? for the ammo types.)
make a world, not a game, we dont want another game.
Hold off until they release a trial... I wish I had.
Hold on till the release of the game, I pre-purchased it and it's full of bugs, I could care less what people say about it as it stands now, the game has promise, but let's see if they are executed correctly, as the poster above, I should of waited as well.
Not just a shameless /bump of my thread, but a couple of follow up questions. I have a feeling that the game is going to be good seeing as it is attracting a bunch of haters which dismiss any argument by a player (=fanboi). If I get sufficiently bored tomorrow I'll DL it.
Are there any specific EU servers by any chance?
How is the guilding (sp?) process?
Is the leveling quick or slow, and are there any content gaps?
Are there many group dungeons, and is the grouping process good?
End game? Haven't seen any talk about this.
With any MMO...if you have even the slightest doubt about buying the game at release...whether it is money, gameplay, technical issues, etc....do not buy the game and wait. Read the first weeks reviews and then decide if they override your doubts.
I was in closed beta for a short time. I had to quit playing the game because it gave me motion sickness like many first person shooters. I guess it was meant to be for I tried Aion closed beta and I'm hooked and will be playing that game.
You join one of 6 factions in this game to control resources, this game is not about levelling to the end, not sure quite how to explain it, but you feel no rush to get there, it is so immersive with things to accomplish along the way. There is no fear of ever having content gaps, the quests are pleantiful, maybe more than what you can do. I haven't done any group instances yet, but from what I am to understand they are all short 10 minute or so instances, as the game does not rely on these, all gear is crafted not dropped from instances. I haven't reached end game yet, but from what I hear it is pvp, its about control of the wasteland.
I'd hold off. The game was unplayable this afternoon. Lag was really bad.
{ Mod Edit }
well im probably the first person in early access to actually Close my account, ie, i unsubsribed.
Just arrived in S2, joined up with the techs, kept spamming to join a guild, and no luck. at level 18/19 and your melee based, S2 is going to eat you alive!
The game has potentinal, but as it is now, 15$ a month is FAR too steep for this game. Im not going to slate the game, as normal Fanboiz will just come on and slag me off rather than defending or accepting the game has faults.
Normally, the game combat Sucks! try it and see. If your used to wows combat, this game is going to be a right pain for you lot, cause u cant auto log onto a target and then use "specials"
all i say, is TRY the game, then decide yourself.
Really? You got eaten alive as melee at lvl 18 in Picus Ridge? AS MELEE? I haven't played melee, but I keep hearing people talk about how easy it is. One guy was just bragging that he made lvl 18 by fighting off 7 lvl 20 mobs at once.
Dude, I hit Picus Ridge at lvl 17 after running through Lightbearers and Enforcers as a low armored/low dodge/low stam Pistoleer.
Sounds like you need to go back to WoW or where-ever you came from anyway. A place where you can just run into a group of mobs and walk away, so long you have one of those little bird thingies hitting your macro key.
As for your problem with the guild, it's that you spammed region to join a guild. The only people who would have picked you up, would be SoF and obviously those zerg recruiters weren't around. Or some other horrible clan, but there aren't too many of those because of the minimum individual player requirement.
There are plenty of clans.

Edit:
Btw, you also obviously put 0 thought into your character. You tried to join Tech, who don't have any melee skills or weapons what-so-ever, as Melee........ yeah.... this game isn't for you.

thankfully i will save my $15 bucks a month....
Good god, its Fanboiz like you that SUCK
what you get paid to come here and SLATE someone that is playing the game?
if this is the community, i think i will go back to my other game.
And im suprised you even mentioned wow, i have not played that for 3 years. Go figure and stick this POS up your ass
I don't represent the community. They are actually really helpful, on the forums and in the game.
I only ragged on you because you went to another thread and flamed it, for no reason. Then I come here to find out why you don't like the game and it's not the game's fault one bit, it's your's. Because you got your butt whooped, as melee, by lvl 15 mobs at lvl 18 and that you didn't even both reading in-game text, site info, forums, or any other place they give you run down on factions and what they are.

It doesn't, it tells you pretty much every step of the way. But, you do have to think about your character, it also tells you that there is no going back if you put your points in the wrong place. Everything is presented to you, they can't make you read it.
It's definitely not a dumbed down game where everything is for nothing. If what you said was true about a game like that, EVE would have been gone a long time ago. FE isn't as complicated as EVE, but it comes close.

I thought you had a choice of FPS or TPS views.

I thought you had a choice of FPS or TPS views.
You do.
Edit:
Posted this in another thread. It's not in aim mode, but if it was I would have my pistols up and some crosshairs.

I agree. Too easy to gimp yourself.
totally agree its far too easy to gimp yourself.
Bear in mind, if you go Pistols / Rifle, you have a MASSIVE Melee defense gimp, ie it gives you a negative on melee defense, that S1 mobs can easily beat you that way!
Not ONCE did any mission or quest say, Make your choice now what setup you want. there is too much aggro trying to get a template for this game.
Dont listen to Fanboiz The hatter, Play the game, then come back here and see if after 2 weeks of leveling to 17+ and you find yourself gimped....
No Pistol Skill or Stat gives you negative Melee defense. Melee defense is based on Coordination and Endurance. Melee attack is based on Strength. Please quit making stuff up.
Pistoleer/Crafter/Tank
No mutations, but that could easily be changed by dropping the crafting. You can craft ammo fine w/o any Intelligence. You can really only got 2.5 classes effectively (Tank being the .5 class here). You could do more, but you're going to suck at all of them.

70 Extra AP is easy to get if you just follow the chains. 150 is fairly easy to get if you go back and pick up missions at a higher level. Over 250 is possible if you're dedicated.

from what it sounds like he's getting gimped by not switching weapons when the mobs are in close contact, for example, the starter crossbow gives you a negative melee defense rating in close combat. to avoid gimping there, switch to melee weapons. Don't sit there and let the mob hammer on you while you are reloading.
It's hard to gimp chars now ever since they added the class templates to the character abilities page. (it's a little dropdown menu on the upper right hand side) Select a specific class and it will highlight your main stats and skills for your class.
