This game however good really is not noob friendly. The community is great but the player base is honestly just way too good at this game to permit the new guy from getting good enough to be anything other then a stat booster for the veteran players.
Every time i played i got my ass handed to me in no time flat, got shot at by unseen opponents and frankly all that ruined the fun. Although i hear spawn camping is not the norm i saw way too much of it and the only solution was to not spawn there... i hate spawn camping.
Maybe i sucked, maybe those other players were just too good. But even though i consider myself decent if not good at most games i found this game and the players way too skilled for me to waste my time. Everyone said i just needed practice but couldn't really get any cause you cant practice when your dead, felt like i couldn't see the enemy but they always knew where i was.
Granted this is all probably about knowing what to do and how to do it, but two weeks of being on the wrong end of the pawnage didn't really encourage me to stick with it. Given a few months i probably could have gotten good at this game but i don't really want 3 months of training to be able to play a game, took me 3 months to become a real Infantry soldier games shouldn't be so much like real life that its no fun.
If you have the patience, dedication, and tough skin to deal with the constant death and frustration then this game could be very rewarding. I suggest you try it but don't expect instant gradification. Its nothing like your typical 3D shooter, no jumping around and fancy weapons, so if you like those you won't like this. This game is 100% skill based, i just didnt have the time to dedicate in order to get good enough at this game to enjoy it.

WWIIOL does have a horrible learning curve. And it isnt newb friendly but they are trying... not that I see it getting better anytime in my lifetime. The biggest problems are that unfortantly camping IS all to common and the norm. Unlike what some people say in that game. The other problems are that it really isnt fun for someone who is a casual player and doesnt want to dedicate 8 hours every evening to becoming the elite pilot, tanker, infantryman, or AT gunner. Then it comes down to the same campaign every time. No changes no frills... after about a year of groundhog day you become really disenchanted with the game really fast.
People who are looking for hardcore tanking, flightmodeling, or infantry combat should really avoid this game... or anyone with short attention spans. But for people who have time, and patiance they can really enjoy this game if they arent looking for a hardcore WWII sim, this is the game for them.
So much crap, so little quality.
Well its hard to start, however it should be do-able battle wise.
It will take you an hour or 2 before you get kills but you should be able to pick it up.
It is best to find a good squad that has TS and training.
When I played COD4 etc all I wanted was a bit of breathing space and a bigger map. When I started this game all I wanted was to find some action! it seemed to take forever to 'go kill'.
After a while I got used to the 'running in' time and learnt where to find a battle and actually make kills. Once you learn you will find yourself on mission for 30 - 60 mins and it feels like 5 mins!
You have to play the game kinda like 'real' and realise you can't just run and shoot, there will always be someone who has patiently sat behind a bush for the last hour waiting for some nOOb like you (or me) to run past so they can get a kill. Patience is the name of this game. And before you run across an open field, think, if you get killed you don't respwan close, you face another (agonising) long run in.
As for tankers and fly boys: These are guys who have played sims for a number of years and are extremely proficient at their art. Some of the fly guys will think nothing of flying for hours on end just looking to pounce, and when they do it is all over in a matter of seconds! Look at some of the air kills on youtube and the ease with which they do it.
Squads are good if they work as a squad but I think this aspect of the game has really dropped off and more and more people are playing 'lonewolf' (nothing like watching 4 or 5 players attempt to 'solo' a bunker and die when they could go as a group and easily take it)
But, learn to watch the maps, follow the chat channels and if nothing is happening join another mission...if you see an msp go up, get there, if it is no good, go elsewhere..best battles are where one side is under strength, go on that side cause you are guaranteed to have multiple targets before you get your arse handed to you! (just make sure you get out and fight and not hide near the spawn or in the AB) - or maybe you end up beating superior numbers!
rule #1: be proactive in your killing!
I wasn't particularly good at FPS when I first started WW2OL. Maybe a really good match in my favor once in a while, but by no means was I any of the forces to watch on the field.
My starting experience in this game was similar to yours. I would run in and get shot by someone, anyone, from a spot that I just couldn't find.
Then I took a whole day to learn. Stopped "running" in to fight and just stood back and watched. I watched what enemy players looked like running across a field. Breaking their head through the brush lines. The paths and positions players typically used. What a tank looked like and how easily it could blend in. Once you get binoculars it really helps the ability to learn from a distance. Sound is also your friend in the game and having surround sound is one of the best blessings in the game.
After a short while I noticed that if you can see your enemy you are already very exposed to gunfire. Just seeing through a hedgerow exposes you from the shoulders up and makes for a very nice target.
Joining a squad was also a great performance boost to survivability. The amount of information being shared is really helpful. From tactics and enemy movement to people helping with general gameplay tips.
Spawncamping seems like a logical leap since the objective is to swarm your enemies location and destroy their ability to spawn there and capture that location.
Latest patch gives binocs to all. Helps even out the fight and gratz on doing the one smart thing every newbie should do. Take your time to learn this is not a simple shooter. Hope you are having a good time in the war.
Wow, finally given binos for level 0. I'd been fighting for that on the kiddy forums years back. They can finally actually watch and observe now when advised to from the vets heh.
edit
I can understand Dog's fustration, worse now than it used to be for WTF got me moments.
What kills you is the thing you never saw, with the TONS of bushes and artificial banks they have now that can be anything and anywhere. On offense it's impossible to keep troops contained with 8'' bushlines they can run down the middle and can't be seen period. So if you're a tank, ATG, inf etc. expect to be sapped or potshotted. Killed my ATG play basically, always some singleton roming EI around. On defense, works the other way. As you push the attack out, it's a chore hunting for some truck burried in the bushes spawning out an army. I saw that sapper charge change, I guess it just got too crazy/easy. As horrible looking and unrealistic the hard cover used to be (not that running through the center of todays bushes is) wonder if it did give better ATG/tank gameplay overall while definately not perfect. Seemed to match up with the farmers field pics you see in real life a bit better.
If tanking, I'd have said get with a squad and only go on large tank ops if they are still around and stick to the middle. That way even if ambushed you wouldn't be the first targeted and have a chance to fire back. But there are some WWIIOL special learning curve things not in regular FPS. Like pointing the tank in a dir and leaving it going flat out while switching to commander or gunner, quick switch to driver for corrections etc. Also for allied tanks with the lower optics, quick switch to commander because he's got better zoom and can actually see if your shot hits at the longer ranges. Being more open, more options, more complicated (no HPs, hit location matters for ex.) there is naturally a bigger learning curve. Sapping is best example, have to study the pics or you're useless. Don't know any other game that requires that type of memorization. BF type games, hit anywhere for 80HP damage doesn't need any.
you have to be really unexpierenced in video games if you think this game is hard to learn...It really isn't. It really doesn't need to have any training or anything because it really is that simple. If you think this game is hard to learn try playing a game like Ils2 sturmovik or something like silent hunter II, or III..Now those games have learning curves.
Even though I thought the learning curve has steep I thought that it was acceptable, and it does look like they are trying to make it more user friendly.
The people were amazing, and the features were very interesting. But, the graphics were a big turn off.
We've just released a preview of 1.31, our biggest update ever. The graphics will improve and several new features have been added. The full preview is here.
We're very excited, and early feedback has been off the chart. Take a look and I hope we can lure some of you back!

I did not found it to be quite as daunting for new players. I have signed up a couple of days ago, completed the trial on the Training server and had to do it again when switched to the real one :P
BUT, and this is only me... I have never had so much fun trying out a new game. Seriously. And I DID tried A LOT so far. Open betas, close betas, released, etc.
Second day I logged in, I played from 10.30pm to 01.30am and did not noticed how late it was (I wake up at 06.00 to go to work). If you have played Delta Force (first one) in multiplayer mode, you will definitely love WW2OL.
I love the one-shot-one-kill scheme, the bleeding twist, the realism of the ballistics, the difficulty of flying an airplane, even for me who started out sims with F22LighningII....
Playing Axis and not plannig on switching sides. Found a Squad fairly easy, managed to gain a rank, and I already have a ton of fun memories about the game - liberating Mainz, defending Luxembourg, hiding in the grass and killing wandering enemies, getting ganked 2 seconds after spawning by a bomber doing a flyby over the base, doing buker duty, running around riding a truck to cap bases...
As of now I don't really play for the ranks, I play because its fun! Despide all the bashing here, the players are nice, helpful and mature, learning curve not that steep if you have played a FPS before, ganking not that bad if you learn to pick your cover right, and the thrill of the kill is a rush!

Better to be crazy, provided you know what sane is...
Welcome aboard Beer, always good to read posts from people who enjoy this sim. It may not be big but it just gets better and better all the time.
after reading this thread, may i ask what squads you all have had positive exp from? (Especially you beer)
Went on yesterday and got nothing from either one of the squads i tried to run with. I realize im totaly new but after reading all the reviews that several people wrote on here, i was thinking that most of the squads were a little more accepting of newer people. At least thats what the website(s) said for the squads i tried to run with.
Im also not oblivious to the fact that they are all trying to win whatever mission theyre on, but no one has time to show or help someone new out?

Text on the help channel, or on the objective channel...#2..if you are on a mission and simply say you are new and would like to join a squad..I bet you won't wait long...BKB...is always newbie friendly..You are asking on the campaign server and not the training server?
Kampfgruppe Wiking aka KGW is always recruiting.
KGW is an Axis squad that muster 40-60 members online each Squad Night (Wednesdays and Sundays, Berlin hours). We have over 100 active members, and you must be playing regularly on our Squad Nights during the trial period to stay a member.
We have four branches: Oden is the Infanterie Abteilung, Thor is the Panzer Abteilung, Sleipner is the Artillerie Abteilung, and Hugin is the Luftwaffe Abteilung. All cooperate very closely. We also have a long history of close cooperation with several other squads on the Axis side. So we often has some hundred men in and around the area where we attacks.
KGW was created in 2000 when CRS/Playnet announced WWII Online.
Vist us at www.kgwiking.com or seek us up online. You will find us easily on an Wednesday or Sunday night.
I'm a good player at FPS games, I'm too casual to be pro, but when I was playing WWIIOL a couple years ago, I found this game had a deep learning curve. It took about 2 weeks of play to become good, but once I got familar with alot of the towns and using my environment as cover, I started to rake in more kills than deaths. You think you're surrounded by pros, but chances are, you're fighting alot of players who have been playing for weeks aswell. But in my experience, dying alot made me a better player in WWIIOL, this made the game a whole lot more exciting, I'd spend ages approachng a town or base, I'd crawl along the ground hearing bullets whizz past me, scared of being hit, as a stray bullet to my leg or lower body would hinder my progress.
