Hello everyone!

Brand new to the forums and playing anything on line for that matter!

I actually have been looking for an on line game to play as i work weird hours ( i work midnights) and would love nothing more to join a game like this to make some new pals, join a squad i can grow with and have alot of fun working at getting good at the game. IRL i also play a tabletop game called flames of war for the axis and i actually build and fly r/c scale warbirds and fly for the axis in the local rc club in my area. Im also a vet having served in the US ARMY during the first gulf war as an M1 Tank gunner. So in my research, this seems to be the game for me as im WAY interested in armor and air force for the axis. I didnt see another game with the ability to play so many options. Did i miss one?

After reading some of the other posts from people thinking of joining the game, i was wondering if some of you wouldent mind answering some questions for me as well if you have some time.

Basically wondering: is the community really accepting? ( Used to play counterstrike untill i got sick of ( and no disrespect intended here) younger people bashing me because i was new and hurling insults.

What kind of joysticks do you all use? couldent really find anything as i havent subscribed yet and cant ask in the forums for the game. I was thinking of getting a whole flight pack set ( my wife has finally gave in to letting me have a new computer just set up for games! which i will be buying this weekend hehehehehe! ) From what im seeing seitek (SP?) seems to be an acceptable brand and product.

Do squads really recruit and train people? Or is it more of a clique thing?

it also seems like they do alot event wise for people playing which i think is a great thing.

I appologise if this is the wrong place or thread/forum to post this question in.

Thanx in advance for answering all my ignorant questions. Any other suggestions or advice is more than appreciated. Hopefully, ill be seeing some of you in the game! HEH! or if any of you wanna show a noob around .....:)

Looking forward to reading your responses!

E

I have played this game since release and must say that in my opinion it is one of the only games that has grown and adapted so well over the years.  The community is awesome, usually old veterans and history buffs and they all are willing to help.  Squads do recruit people and train them, back in the day it was harder to find a squad...but nowadays you can't play without being in one (you spawn into a squad)  You have a chain of command in this game.  Officers determine what tanks/infantry/etc. will be allocated to where.  If a town is taken, chances are the high command will instantly start bringing up the reserves from the rear.

You can play this game at night, and take some towns only to wake up the next morning and see the entire frontline has shifted.  It's amazing seeing all the forces come together.  Save for some AI mg nests and anti air guns, everything in the game is a player.  You could spawn in france and could walk for 24 hours and never see another load screen again.  Everything is to scale...and the first time you see a bomber wing strike a target, or a stick of paratroopers coming down from the sky you'll sell your soul to this game.

Take all your ideas of counterstrike and throw them out the window when dealing with this game.  WW2OL is persistent.  This game is extremely authentic, no bunny hopper here.  As far as hit detection, round penetration, distance, iron sights, viewfinders etc.  everything is pretty much equivalent to the real world.  You will not see any markings showing you the enemy...no names above enemy heads (the only thing you'll know is an enemy will be Aircraft).

When you play as a rifleman don't get too discouraged if you can't tell if you hit someone.  Remember this is a huge war happening at multiple places.  You can have a successful mission and barely do anything but just stay alive.  (I know it sounds odd but you'll completely understand once ingame)

Just watch the world chat...The High Command will let you know what town to spawn into and when.  I've even seen 20+ Allied tanks hide in a forest outside of a town for an hour or two, with infantry as spotters at the treeline.  Then attacking the town as soon as they got word from High Command.  It was like watching a movie.

If you want realism and a great bunch of MATURE people to play with than WW2OL is definitely a good choice.  Be prepared though, the learning curve is somewhat steep, and certain vehicles/guns/aircraft have a BUNCH of key commands but it's all for the sake of realism.

The first time you see an enemy tank or truck explode, or fight off a counterattack, you'll start cheering out loud.  Give the game a shot and some patience.  You'll find it has an outrageous amount of stuff you can actually do...(like driving a truck full of infantry from one town to another to help resupply their reserves, blowing up bridges and factories etc.)

Oh yea and about the joystick, I use a Saitek and it's done me just fine.  I'd recommend getting one that has a few more buttons than just a trigger but its up to you.  You'll definitely want to have one for this game though...And don't worry about the community badmouthing you if you do something accidentally or die...(There's so many people dying at the same time it's all irrelevant anyhow)  After you die or return to base you'll see a detailed list of all your mission's accomplishments.  The only thing I'd warn about is wasting armor...the people (High Command) tend to get a bit uneasy if you take a tank out when a town is completely overrun or if it's being reinforced, but for the most part it'll just be someone saying, "Don't spawn any armor here anymore," or "Take tanks from so and so town/FB (fire or forward base) instead."  You'll understand ;) it's all simple once you've got a few hours under your belt.

Ah you're a tanker??  I was a Cavalry Scout (19D) with 1-1 Cav 1st AD in Büdingen, Germany!

And another piece of advice...When in an enemy town, take the tables(control points) that are spawnable first, just watch where everyone goes or look at your map in detail...the other one's don't do a whole lot except maybe cut down the enemies reserves.

Thanx for such an awesome and speedy response! Actually havent been to bed yet because i was waiting for someone to answer! hehehehe.

Think ill be buying the new computer and giving it a shot as again, this game seems for me. Starting with the trial period but im almost ready to subscribe already! REALLY interested in doing armor and air in this game.

Hopefully the local best buy will have the joystick you recomended, if not again, ill just order the flight pack thing as itd be cool to have rudder and throttle controls ( hehehe have to thank my wife again)  Looking forward to reading more responses. Really would like to hook up with you in the game when i get everything up and running. Also need a hedset so i can download teamspeak as i think that would be way fun to fight with some people using it as well.

Awesome that your also a Vet! I was attached to 1st AD as well when i went to the gulf.

Alos really glad the community is so cool and the counterstrike stuff isnt there! Im actually looking forward to trying this out. Im sure theres gonna be some clowns like there were in cs, but as long as the majority isnt like that, im cool.

Again, i appreciate the time you took to answer my posted ignorant questions!

  • Lo-KiLo-Ki Member UncommonPosts: 98

You'd be surprised.  I played for years and only came across a few clowns.  The learning curve helps weed them out.  The people more into history, ww2, realistic tactical warfare stay.  So all of your Halo, Call of Duty kids (so many kills in a round or so many flag caps in a round) aren't here, as this game is just not like a normal FPS at all.  Not many "kids" would have the patience to wait for reinforcements, follow orders, use cover and concealment effectively, etc.

You'll see a lot of people using actual tactics from the period too.  I saw, or rather was the unfortunate witness of some German PaK 40s waiting for our tank column to move down the road before they opened fire on our rears, just like what some German units were known for doing in the Eastern Front, it was utter chaos trying to figure out where they were shooting from.  Imagine the patience that required, getting people from different parts of the country to all wait, and then attacking as one.  (Teamspeak and/or Ventrillo are godsends so yea get it hehe)  I've just had so many memorable things happen in this game.

The game is ww2OL, not like battlefield 1942 or call of duty so have no fear.  The only time the theater map resets is when one side pushes the frontline to a point where the opposing army just cannot win.  And as you can see on the official site...the Campaign number is only like 40 something or 50 something....so since 2001 it's only reset the map 40 or 50 times.

  • Lo-KiLo-Ki Member UncommonPosts: 98

If you wanna go German, then I'll reeeeeeeeeeeeeally reconsider resubbing.  All my friends were allies at the time and back in the day you couldn't switch armies for 24 hours (helps defeat spies)!  But nowadays is more lenient.  And the germans have this tank i can't remember the nomenclature off the top of my head but....dude....the main gun is an automatic.  So yea I wouldn't mind teaming up with ya and taken out some allies for a change of pace ;)

EDIT:  on a side note, I remember some chatter once about how the German side's High Command is extremely well organized.  As an ally player for the longest time, I can remember plenty of times our attacks failing because the Germans just seemed to know what was going on before us, and had defenses set up and reinforcements rolling in for a counterattack before an actual attack even happened... they weren't using spies...just a lot of good tacticians on the german side ;)

As a new player you wont be able to drive all tanks from the start.

Also, at the start of the campaign only certain tanks are available.  For the most advanced types (eg tiger), you need to wait several weeks before they become available.

    thanx again to everyone!

got my new comuter and downloaded everything. after going thru the trial sign up process ( which was kinda wacky) i spent all last night doing the tutorials. still not too huge on infantry as it still semi reminded me of cs. Then went on to armor. have to say as an ex tanker its suprisingly realistic! im loving it so far. so today tried programming my joysticks and ran into some small probs. waiting for a pla of mine to come over as he had to download the sofware and drivers for them and should have everything running good. the joysticks work for tank combat for sure. just wanna be able to program positions and things into the stick buttons. I also need them set up so i can use my throttle for air training which im anxiously waiting to do. also downloaded teamspeak but have little to no idea how to use it.

So after a bit of going thru all the tutorials again, decided to go to the training server. kinda excited as i got my first kill today! got driving around untill someone drove into the spawn area and laid me out! respawnd and it happened again. respawned after that and there he was! landed some shot on him and got my first kill! I was pretty dang excited. Even though its a training server thing, made me feel pretty good. just gotta get used to the keys for positions and things.

Still kinda confused about using the chat window and the radios. guess ill go thru that tutorial again sometime today.

can you run with people on the training server to do missions? if someone could help me out, id appreciate it. dunno if its even too soon for me to do that kind of thing.

really likeing this game. gonna subscribe after my trial is up for sure and hopefully start looking to be a recruit for a squad i saw on the homepage website. noticed alot of squad websites from the links listed dont work which is sad because im excited to see who is who and what is what.

Out of the ones i saw ( and actually was refered to one be several people -the iron wolves and the kvd) which im way interested in for armor. Also would liek to get good enough to recruit and train with the totemkopfs.

As far as air force, theres several id love to train with but thats after i go thru everything.

ehhh, still giddiy i killed something! hehehehe

well thanx for all the advice and help for sure.

looking forward to makin some new friends and meeting some of you on line!

  • emmettrhallemmettrhall Member Posts: 11

so i could use some help again from you all as i cant log onto the homepage forums to ask anything as im still on my trial time.

    1) can someone pm me and explaine some things about logging on to the training server?

    2) can i not log on in the training server and play with other people?when i hit the .who command in the chat window it shows a bunch of names. i went driving around about an hour and half tonight and found nothing or no one. yet people said they were there to practice and train.

    3) should i wait untill my tiral is over to try and join a squad and go thru theyre recruitment process learning more of the game and training with them?

    4) i saw that there was a brigade who was playing a mission today. i was and still am way confused about this screen. if i read it right i couldent spawn even as infantry because i wasent ranked high enough.

I dunno, hopefully one of you could help me out a bit.

    Thanx in advance,

    E

  • CortoCorto Member Posts: 64

There's too few people on trainingserver to do anything unorganised.  Mostly it's squadmembers who are on a planned training ops.  Maybe they will let you join their training (if it's about what you want to practice)?

If you want to learn to fly etc... best use trainingserver as not to waste planes from the campaign when they crash.

Do not wait to join a squad until you're out of trial, per sé.  Take the time to choose the one that fits your playing style though (axis -allies, voicecomms mandatory or not, timezone, ...).

  • emmettrhallemmettrhall Member Posts: 11

    thanx again!

when im practicing flying, i usualy just go thru the tutorial and at the end of that i click NOT to despawn so i can get some flight time in. Either that or i go to the combat flight training/ live fire arena section and fly there without picking a mission or anything. dont wanna mess anyones time or missions up havin to walk someone new thru everything.

last night though i got kinda board of drivin the tank around in the live combat arena/training area and and seeing no one so i decided to jump into a mission as infantry that had 2 other people playing ( even though the status bar in the brigade area said the brigade was active with an active mission with the full status bar. ) jumped in and got to play for a bit. I think it was just two guys practcing as well as i got it from someone and when i got back on in the chat window ( yes im starting to understand it a bit now) someone appologised for my death. guess it was two brothers playing against each other and i got mistaken. got another kill ( using infantry last night) and then it just seemed they both left. hopefully, i didnt wreck theyre time.

so im thinking of doing the same today and try to run with anyone who will let me run with them.

Thanx for the advice about joining a squad as well. Just thought it would be a bit premature as im not out of the trial weeks yet. After reading some recruitment letters, applications, guidelines and forms there are DEFINATELY some people i wanna fight for. Just a little intimidated as again, its rare that you find some people who wanna show "that new guy" how to play.  So maybe ill fill some of the applications and things out and see what happens.

Had a joystick question as well. Is there a way to save specific profiles for your stick and apply it to what you do in game? Have one setting with certain buttons programmed in for flight and be able to pull up another profile for the same stick with a different profile for tanks?

Again sorry for being a pain. just dont know who else to go to is all.

Jump into the campaign server and join almost any squad. They will train you, let you run with them and will understand if you decide to go elsewhere. This is the most newbie friendly game online and the only concern about learning is wasting aircraft. Sounds like you are spending more time in training than playing, so....go get killed and learn the easy way:-). Welcome aboard.

  • emmettrhallemmettrhall Member Posts: 11

    Thanx hardcase!

Did that today and i didnt realise i had to go thru all the basic training stuff again.

So i did that and while i was doing that, had some tanks and things open up on me, but i didnt die thanx to knowing all that stuff already from the training server! hehehehe ( nothin like running behind the spawn point when a tank opens up on you! )

I have been spending alot of time in the training server so i can at least be able to move and manuver so i wont be a burden so much to people who are gonna have to run with me. the last thing i wanna do is blow some mission or objective for a team/squad of people who worked hard to complete it just because of my ignorance. It's still pretty intimidating to me.

I went thru the list of squads and theyre websites again and applyed to get on 1lb as a recruit. After reading the mission statement, code of ethics, code of conduct, and way they handel themselves seems to be an excellent place for me to start. although i still wanna check out 116th as well since they also do armor and air force. So either way im excited to see and learn from people if they give me a chance! (unlike one of the other games i used to play on line)

Ill totally take your advice and get more into the campaign server as well from now on, just dont wanna blow it for anyone is all. Agagin, it's hard for me to fathom that people who actually wanna "run with that new guy who knows nothing", and instead have more fun playing than teaching and keeping an eye out for a noobie.

Again, thanx for your advice and opinion! I still look forward to more (advice and opinions) as i'm sure i can learn and take something from everyones own advice and opinions.

Now i need to figure out how to use teamspeak now that i have downloaded it! Being 40 yrs old and not being caught up on technology and knowing things stinks!

We were all new once..don't worry yourself silly. Jump in and have fun, About the only thing you can do wrong..is on a sneaky mission.if fire your rifle..before the time..otherwise we are all just having a good time.

  • emmettrhallemmettrhall Member Posts: 11

took your advice and today was the the first day i played in the camoaign on line.

I REALLY LOVE this game is all i can say.

I found a squad that totally took me under theyre wing. While it was a bit akward at first, about an hour into it, even though i was diying "well", i started to get the hang of it.  Pretty proud of myself. Ive never really been good at fps games. By the end of my session, i had 2 kills and 1 capp. Starting to get ahold of the on line jargon and what needs to happen.

Just a word of caution, you will probably hear some players on the axis side claim the devs are biased against the side or something, you will hear similar accusations on all side in game, and frankly none of them have any merit.

Many players take to playing one side only for their entire time in game. Myself I play both sides, usually doing several map stints as one side before going to the other for several maps, or during times when I can not committ to long hours, I will play which ever side is underpopulated or losing.

I have come to notice in my time many more axis oriented people can be somewhat shocked by the ease in which their armor can be killed, especially the Tiger which has developed a myth of invincibility far beyond its actual strength. The armor game is very detailed in terms of penetration of the guns and armor strength, but it is wholly statistical and certain phenomina and manufacturing weaknesses or strengths are not taken into account.

For example the Sherman 75mm tank for example in game benifits from the fact weld weaknesses are not modelled, a problem which affects all tanks but the Shermans front glacis plate was made up of several pieces reducing its strength to what it should have been. In game its strength is what it should have been because weld weaknesses are not modelled. A number of other things are not modeleld due to the massive complexitiy in modeling such things. Still at times the Sherman can prove extremely resiliant to German guns at time than it probably was (in regards to high velocity 75mm roudns especially), but this is more the limitation of the ballistic system than the Devs showing bias and making one sides stuff harder to kill.

Similarly you will probably hear some complaining about the French using the 1944 Sherman 76mm tank to fight the 1942 Tiger tank. It should be remembered that the entire premis of the game is on a fictional play of the Battle of France, and since history goes out the window immediately as the game starts because nothing that happened historically will happen in game, the Devs at times will drop the yearly introduction criteria to allow for a more balanced tank matchup to occur. Since the game DOES NOT unfold historically, it is unfair to limit a side by how their technology unfolded historically since its developement was based on very different criteria than what would have been found had the war in France not ended so quickly.

The allies have their own phobia's and complaints of bias at times as well, its not side specific, but since you appear a more axis oriented player I was focusing on the big things you will probably hear. The game benifits from straight thinking players, not players thinking their is a conspiracy of a sorts. I woudl recommend after a time you play the allied side. As the allies have 2 countries and tech to explore, 66% of all the toys are there. Thus get your money's worth when you are comfortable and play the other side, not just to experience the game from another perspective but to learn the weaknesses of your potential enemies.

Anyways I will see ya in game.

Im a pretty big WWII buff myself. Reason i first wanted to try this game is because i also play a tabletop game called "Flames of war".  I was looking for something like that on line and BAAM! found this game.  Not only do you have the choice to play infantry, but air armor and navy as well. Being a desert shield vet ( i was a gunner on an M1) i can say this game is more realistic than ive seen in other games for sure.

As a brand new player,  i can honestly say that everyone here has been dead on with what they say the game is like.  I have no prob having less than mind blowing graphix (actually the graphix arent all that bad imo) for the gameplay that i experenced yesterday! I know after running with the squad i did yesterday, this is absolutley the game for me.

Thanx again Hardcase and WO! Again both of your opinions i value. I'm having a blast running with the axis right now.

Wo- i can see where your comming from for sure as far as weakpoints in armor and things.

all in all, im way looking forward to progressing in this game and having fun. already made some new pals ( from another country none the less) hehehehehe

If you guys are ever on my gamename is evile. hope to see you guys soon.

A couple of thingds to do to get a better fps...under Persona, Settings, Video.. turn off vertical syncing, and runahead. Then under UI...turn off the minimap..it is a fps hog. I always enjoy reading post from people who have just joined:;-) Make sure you have the lastest drivers for your vid and sound and motherboard. Turn down sound voices to the value that can be done on the souncard withoiut using CPU cycles. If you have an onboard sound card, think about gettting a standalone card to take processing off the cpu..another fps drain. Again, welcome aboard!

Welcome to WWII Online and the Axis forces Emmettrhall.

I see you're addicted already. :) I have played this game since 2002. I have also tried other games during this period but none has cut it for me as WWII Online does.

    Thanx again hardcase and sparre!

Had an amazing time yesterday. Got to run with the hellfish. Guess one of them was on a mission with me when, because of my ignorance, i bumped the wrong radio and someone let me know it was the wrong one! They said it was pretty wrong for them to say what was said to me and asked if i wanted to run with them for a bit. Glad i did! Several of them were super cool about things and taught me a TON yesterday! They took me on a sapper mission as infantry support to see how it works, and showed me how to use an aa gun hehehhee( which is still kinda tricky. l clipped a plane but no kills...YET! hehehehehe). Then one of them let me run with him as he explained how to do things effectively. Lowering wepon when running, auto run, and how to regain yer stamina for those LONG walks into something. Showed me how to snipe and cover  when the axis is trying to take something ( which was fun as anything). Then he taught me how to blow ai bunkers and towers. After that, he showed me some of the different buildings and how to use cover in citys correctily. Then it was "lets check out buildings if you ever wanna snipe or cover a movement into a city" which was helpfull as anything. It helps if you know where someone may be at to cover an advance. All the while i also bumped two or 3 radios ( the correct ones this time). Got a promotion to private! Tomorrow ( which is actually today) he's gonna show me how to clear radio buildings by myself. I am pretty happy one guy chose to take the time to show a new person whats going on and "here's how you do this" kinda thing. Im pretty excited.

Sparre, i have run behind KGW but never ran with them. hehehe. Actually, one of the things i got to do yesterday was on an assult, i was behing a KGW tank. chillin out in the weeds untill Mr Sapper thinks hes gonna be all stealthy and sneek up on one of your tanks. :) didnt turn out well for him. ( or the other two sappers who tried it after him! hehehehehe). Id LOVE to try to run with KGW, but im obviously not good enough yet. The other squads i REALLY wanna run with is the 505th, and the 1LB. KGW, the 505th, and 1lb are all killers and wouldent wanna disrespect them by runnin with them and gettin zapped a ton. Eventually, ill build my confidence and ask to run with one of them.  I just think its awesome that the helfish guys took time out to show me these things and ran with me. Made me feel like part of the team from second one, which is awesome. As far as being addicted, YEP! im not even out of my 14 day trial period and im gonna subscribe for a year tomorrow. ( Payday!)  Thanx again for all your well wishes and welcomes! still up for listening to all of your advice and opinions. Hopefully, ill get ta run and see some of you in the game. Im also now on ts. and my gamename is evile.

Glad you are having a great intro!. After a while you will see how squads intermingle and you will simply team up with whoever is on your mission. Heh, you dont have to be good to play with people,,just not bad:-). Just jump into a mission and follow the guy in front. Hats off to the guy who is showing you the ropes. WW2OL is full of great people. AAA is funner than dripping snot.
