Longer answer: no one at NetDevil has stated they WON'T be adding player avatars at some point (one would assume they could re-use the assets from AA), but it seems highly unlikely. The focus is on fast-paced ship combat and personally, I'd hope that game/content updates and expansions after launch would focus on enhancing this core element of the gameplay.
edit: ships ARE your avatar or ship IS your avatar...
It will be a glorious day when a developer figures out that no one wants to play a ship who isn't already playing EVE.
Give us the ability to land on a planet and build an HQ and fight the natives, and rape the land and seas ... and then climb back in our ships and take off. Or, as a more realistic alternative, at least give us the ability to drop drones/clones/bots on a planet and play through their eyes.
If it ain't visceral, I'm no longer interested. EVE is a screensaver, and dogfights in space amount to flying in giant circles. Space is boring as a solo medium.
SWG remains the only game who has done much to get this mix right (as of the Jump to Lightspeed expansion). Too bad they turned around and ruined the game not long after.
hang on, EVE is huge! and lets face it... they put about to min into just about everything but the graphics. (right click. now, do you want to circle this person? GO AHEAD! click here!) and EVE (until recently) you could NOT get out of your ship.
One of the reasons I think this is a great game is because they put so much thought into the main purpose of the game, space flight! if you could get out, imagine how many LESS players would be in the air in the MASSIVE dog fights and huge space battles.
one thing I don't like, is how much the release date has been pushed back. a ton. i've been watching it since novenber saying "oh beta is next month!" walking around would kill it for so many people. it would be a much bigger download, more time, better system scecs.... killer.

I see what your saying, but the trouble is, you are really asking for two separate games, one with deep spaceship combat (SWG had it, but no depth) and a great ground game. SWG had it, but great, no, it was a buggy, unbalanced mess that people these days only view through rose colored glasses.
So far its been too much of endevour for someone to make such a game, but were someone like Blizzard to make Starcraft into an MMORPG, perhaps it would be possible.

Just like I don't get a rats ass about player housing either.

The devs know its not a big deal, so it will not be there for release at least.
Then the devs know NOTHING,this is exactly why millions would not play this or EVE.This type of game is the one type of game that could vault above all other games if they would get it right and put in the huge effort.
I realize this is the problem,to make a game of this magnitude would take a HUGE staff and lots of money/time and effort, but this si what it would take to be a great game that millions would play.As is it is just another game trying to challenge EVE,and BTW there is ALOT more to immersion than just having ships fighting in a non realistic space world.
What happens to your ship when damaged?you live in it?sleep in it?they repair it you still stay in it?WHat there is flaoting CAA that comes to rescue yo uafter you lose a battle?
I am sorry but this is nothing more than a cheap old fashion console setup, this is not the type of game worthy for PC just as EVE is not either. As to the premise behind why so many would play it,sure i agree it may be a tad more fun and better looking combat than EVE,but it is just not enough.

You were doing well until this highlighted line. You fail to understand EVE so you deride it. Not sure you're ready for a more complex game.

When I played Earth and Beyond, you could get out of your ship at a station, but it was an instance. The ship docked and you appeared on the deck. You could look at your ship docked, walk around it and admire all its weapons and upgrades too. They had some type of equipment there that you could change the color of your clothes or something, cant remember.
There were quests to take, vendors to buy from and plus you could meet your friends there and walk around.
I thought it was pretty cool, actually hanging out and trading with your friends and acquaintances. Added another level of socialization in my opinion.

eve was a partial success, they pull in a lot of money. however, it failed because of the 3 min of combat and interface though. *click* *click* orbit.... *click* attack..... *click*... I'm dying... *click* jump to station... *click* this is a twitch based game! it's nothing like EVE. the combat is more intense, the pvp is better, the way it opperates is better. it's EvE didn't fail becasue you can't get out. They failed because they were un-innovative in their operating and combat system. this game will be as better than eve by far because it will be a partial success in everything eve was and a full success in the highly improved systems eve never put out.
I think this will make or break if I play this. I want to feel like I am a space pilot, not a ship.
*nod*
Did the main characters in Star Wars and Star Trek ships? No they were characters to why arent developers getting that even though you are playing in a space sci-fi setting you still want to play a character and not a ship. I mean playing a ship is just ... weird.

You are missing an important aspect of Eve; you can have huge battle ships and capital ships where as in jumpgate, as far as I know, all you can fly are tiny fighters.
So even though the combat in this game may be more fun, there are alot of trekkies out there that want to fly a battle ship and not a fighter. Heck Im a babylon 5 fan and I want to command a capital ship, not a fighter.
This game will cater at a niche audience, at most, unless they add larger ships.
But even in Eve capital ships, you still play as if it were a fighter... just a super slow one. No crew and no ability to explore your ship. Like you were saying in your previous post. I want a game where I am a pilot, not a ship. Unfortunately, neither Eve or JGE are that game.
You all should check out StarTrek online. Your avatar is a Captin, you have a ship. You also have a command crew that you can pick from to use as your away team, and they act like pets...but you can give them idividual commands. If any of this ideas are executed correctly this game should be prertty cool.
Longer answer: no one at NetDevil has stated they WON'T be adding player avatars at some point (one would assume they could re-use the assets from AA), but it seems highly unlikely. Im sorry to break it to you, but I went to gamescon and played JE, had a press meeting with them. And trust me the game is nothing at all fast. Its slow as hell, I felt like swimming backwards when using afterburner. I was very hyped on this game, and we went there 2 persons since we wanted to start a community site for the game ( we run a few allready for other games) so we had press access. But after 30 mins of gaming, well to be honest, the first 5 mins was super hyped and the last 25, we had to force our selfs to keep playing since we drove 14 hours just to see JE, but after those 25 mins it was clear to us that we were never again gonna spend time on this game again, unless they seriously do something about the speed. The only factor that ruins everything for us in this games is the speed/pace. Everything else is great and or ok. Offc. there were strange things like the ship doing trampolin jumbs when they hit astroids, kinda fun to use in combat tho :P But heck its in beta. Still... well I was just sorely disapointed. Not trolling, I still love so many other aspects of the game but, well I hope they do a serious speed burst, want that good old "Decent II" feeling back in a space combat MMO, and JE has all it takes to get there.
The MMO gamer equation: Social skills + anonymity = skill + toughness divided by actual ability.

yeah, if you really want both ship and avatar gameplay, check out STO. It's really quite a solid game. I played the demo at PAX and the gameplay is surely there... Space is tactical, and ground is more like a FPS/MMO mix. The ground is cool because you always have 4 others with you (whether it be NPC bridge officers, or other players, or some cobination of that). So the ground is really active. Space is where the game truely shines. Shield facings and power distribution are really well done. It would be a great strategy space game all on it's own, even without the MMO aspects.
But, if you want a twitch space game, JGE is still your game. It's looking a lot better than BP IMO. The other game on the horizon to think aobut would be Infinity-search for earth. It's a very small development, but what they've released thus far is great (no walking arund their either, so I suppose STO has a monopoly in that aspect )
