Welcome to Fallen Earth
Due to unforeseen technical difficulties, the server and forums will be unavailable until 11:30pm EDT (GMT-4) while we fix a server deadlock. We sincerely apologize for this interruption in service and are working hard to bring things back online as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
The Fallen Earth Team
Not only has the game down most of the day, they turned off the Forums so you cant even post a gripe about it.
I am having a tough time understanding why they have a test server and do not seem to be using it to test the changes they put into the game before torturing the user base.

Yeahh.... bad move on Icarus's part. I haven't played all weekend because I'm not near a gaming machine, but all I can do is hope ti doesn't hurt them too bad.

I cant be sure but I dont think they implemented anything. Thier servers just fell down and went boom.
I agree I hope they didnt just screw themselves on thier busiest weekend post-launch.
I noticed that the only avenue for players to complain was through ingame chat. Lots of scathing remarks and GM's getting irate. Even threats to ban players for using capital letters in chat. This game is a complete fiasco and I'm bitterly dissapointed by the whole thing after all the hype.
The tutorial at the start of the game is really poor. Lots of new players in chat totally confused in the scenario of escaping the Hoover Dam. Someone should be sacked for this.
I don't care how technically complicated these games are! When you charge someone money for entertainment or a product you need to deliver it in perfect order.
There are lots of products out there that are technically complicated, but they still work on delivery. Time for these software studios to do some growing up and become professional at what they do.
This is the first time you've ever had a MMORPG server go down for a whole day in fifteen years of gaming? Your MMORPG gaming must be very limited.
The statement you quote says nothing about game patching; they had a critical failure on their server (hardware/software, etc). That would not be game-patch related and would not be something you could test.
It appears that the forums are on the same server as the server-side game, which would explain why the forums are down. Not particularly intelligent, but it would not be the first MMORPG I've played where that was the situation.
I note there is no mention of a patch of any kind today in the launcher or on the official site; just the announcement of the server issue.

Maybe it's because the code runs fine for the 20 people on the test server but can't handle the 800 people on the live server.
Yes, I made those numbers up all by myself. The point is that the server issues seem to be linked to player load. I wasn't in the beta but I'm guessing that even their stress test did not prepare them for what they have faced in the last few days. I think they will get it sorted out in time.
First mmorpg or something ?
These things happen in games that have been out (and working) for years. As a cb tester I can say: I don't see how anyone could have problems getting through the tutorial (even though I never bought the game). They hold your hand through the entire thing, what are they going to do when they hit the actual game world? When there is nothing to really tell you what you should be doing, because that's entirely up to you?
Secondly, what do you mean by "all the hype"?

Yeah the new player channel got so bad that the GMs started posting instructions describing how to take their complaints to the forums, then the forums got overloaded to the point that no-one could use them!
I'm not impressed. I enjoy the gameplay when it's working but I'm encountering more and more problems as time goes by. Of course the fanbois won't see reason and say that everything's fine for them - will be interesting to see how many of them remain silent as if nothing happened after the forums come back

I had problems getting through the the tutorial purely due to server side lag not a lack of understanding. Can you turn that off for alts, this was the second time I went through it... don't fancy doing it again.
Unfortunately Fallen Earth is a game produced by a indie developer with a smallish team. In my expirences the first week or two after an mmo launch (I'm talking AAA titles too) the servers are always screwy and bugs need to be worked out. Personally I believe their locking the forums was a good move, because when most games launch the forums explode with complaints, and people who are like "Okay the severs down, this game sucks, I want my money back, Who's with me". That tends to create alot of bad vibes.
Blizzard uses WOW to harvest hours played into bottles so that the dev team can remain immortal
My apologies if the point of the post was missed.
In 15 years of gaming this is the first time I have ever seen a gaming company turn off their forums when they take down a game server, very strange in my eyes.
QFE and honestly I laughted ad the OP... 15 years of gaming... Actually the only game that never crashed for me is Pong.

No, the game has been plagued with bugs all day before the server went down. Think there's more there than hardware problems?
First time in 15 years, huh? First MMO launch? Coming from WoW perhaps? Just to let you folks know, this is common at MMO launches. When WoW first launched there was damn near weeks were the game was completely unplayable or the servers were down. Only excellent launch I have ever seen was with Dark Age of Camelot and even that wasn't perfect.
Please, before you posted how much experience you have, make sure that it actually applies to the medium your complaining about. Been playing MMO's for eleven years and all this has happened before, even the whining and complaining. And also, before you buy anything would be wise to be an intelligent consumer and know what you are getting into, instead of crying when everything isn't what you expected.
Consider this experience part of your education, and welcome to launch week/month.

The initial part of the tutorial was confusing and GM did have to hold my hand to get through it and well as other players. Lag was an issue too which meant logging and logging in repeatedly. I wasn't alone in the griping on chat so I suggest for those that haven't bought the game, but expressed an opinion here, go try it for yourself.
I've been playing since the 9th, and there have been no serious issues whatsoever. None at least, that weren't fixed immediately.
There has been a new issue that popped up the past couple of days, most likely due to a huge influx of new players. Missions are taking a while to update, and so are queued craft items. The server is lagged out, people are having "trouble" with the tutorial because the server was going kaput, not because the tutorial was poorly designed. So stop being intentionally cryptic and vague about "the tutorial doesn't work, so someone should be sacked".
The tutorial Does work, it's the server that is having issues right now. Wait until it comes back up and voila..
Half a day offline.. oh my.. total rip-off.. waaah!! Give me a break.
The forums are down too because they probably share the same infrastructure as the game server. I saw some of this on the first few hours of launch, where the forums started to getting heavy and started giving the game server some issues. Not the first time I've seen a game do this.. so not that "serious" as people make it out to be.
Contrary to popular belief, the sky hath not fallen.
This has happened in many games I have played over the last 10 years...I can't see how you say it has never happened to you before....I'm talking MMOs.
Anyway, i don't and wont play this game as it just doesn't interest me but Champions Online had their forums and servers go down in tandem.....don't know why but it seems to be a trend. Maybe it is to keep ppl from screaming bloody murder on the forums.
Seems like a good idea......I just feel sorry for any pets you might have.
After 15 years you'd think they would get it right. It's not down to the consumer to check everything works okay. If your expectations are that low then this industry will get away with extremely poor launches. I pay good money to supposed experts to produce a quality product. I don't need to know about the technical difficulties I just want to game without problems. I want the product to do what it says on the side of the tin. This is not unreasonable and the more we complain the better the industry will respond. It's your misplaced empathy and indeed apathy that lets them get away with this.
Every game, every single one, has problems like this server deadlock.
I am not sure about GMs getting upset if people complain about the game, but I really like the idea of threatening to ban people for using block letters. Part of A GMs job is to keep people in line, and stop things like "<ability> anal>." GMs are supposed to be policing chat to keep things civil and keep people from acting the fool. They are supposed to be involved, and block letters are just stupid, and no one should be using them. People should also be banned for excessive cursing, bigoted remarks, and the like, but that so rarely happens. Maybe there is a company that cares about keeping their game a fun world to be in? That would be nice.
I have only heard good things about the tutorial, but I have not played it, so I cannot know. But I have a feeling the tutorial is fine. New players are easily confused by so many things, and they want everything spoon fed to them, like children (indicative of something about them?). Part of the fun of an MMO should be finding things out on your own, exploring a world, getting lost, getting in trouble, losing and learning from your loss. That is what makes a game good in my eyes, and in the eyes of many of our fellow gamers. I think there are too many people getting spoiled on easy games, you know the ones, and I think they should stick to those games instead of trying to "dumb down" more complicated games. If it is too hard for you...maybe you are not cut out for it?
As for it being released with problems...I have never, ever seen a game that was release "in perfect order." It just does not ever happen. Most games have issues during their launch, and shortly afterwards. Many if not most have server lockups or failures. That is part of the deal when you buy a game at launch.
Edit: For Typos.
I agree with others that perhaps this is your first MMO launch ever and you just pulled 15 years out of your ass.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
WTF? No subscription fee?
humm ... the issues.... How many were in the betas? they should of had more people in it to test their equipment. So I have payed top dollar to play an unplayable game. It really don't mater how you look at it, it's unfinished. Seams they have decided not to test more and release sooner. So easy come easy go...... Just hope people stop and not waist there money and watch the forums to see the progress.
to the post above, what the point of having betas? Humm to test maybe? now they are live and have major server issues. one thing to have in game issues that's fine but sitting here not being able to play I see that as an issue that should have been solved in beta. Ill sell you a bridge for cheep.....
Yeah. its been bad since launch. I'm not going to write this one off yet though. Have done beta testing for 4 or 5 titles at this point and they've all had some issues. Still the game has so much depth and addiction, can't wait until they get their servers cleaned out.

Well lets see. In the 15 years and 20+ MMO's I have been involved at launch this was the norm. Examples:
EQ, Dark and Light, Darkfall, Anarchy Online, WWII Online and the list goes on. Indie companies usually have limited resources and focus them on there most urgent issues. I am not saying its right, It's just a fact of life for these companies.
I'd like to point out that there are several confirmed bugs in the tutorial where the player is unable to complete it. Instances such as the server not allowing players to loot the corpse to receive your initial weapon, the cutscene not playing at the end of the tutorial (When the bomb goes off) , and other issues (player falling through the map for one).
It's actually common. Expect it to become more and more common as time goes on and more MMOs tie in your forum account with your player account in various ways.
- RPG Quiz - can you get all 25 right?
- FPS Quiz - how well do you know your shooters?

I'm fully aware of the issues you're referring to ( I played from Cb through OB). Those issues popped up during the stress tests before open beta (through fileplanet). I should point out they were handled admirably. I digress..
I wasn't referring to issues exactly, rather to the fact that it becomes non-linear after the tutorial .
