Steve Pierce, the CEO of Onverse, introduces his game to our community in this developer journal.
Onverse, or the Online Universe, is a social virtual world. Now… don’t let me lose you there. A lot of people think “virtual world” and their minds drift to visions filled with brain-boggling complexity and scattered virtual porn clubs. No, no, no… Onverse is more of an MMO. We’re content creators and you’re content devourers. I should mention though that if it weren’t for games like Second Life, we might not be here, something I truly thank them for and think they have a great product, we’re just different.
A social world is a world that revolves around hanging out with friends; it’s as simple as that. We built Onverse in this style because it is a great platform to build out from. Why build a world focused on sci-fi, or vehicles, or maybe a western? Why not build a place that you can come back to from any genre of game? This is what this social world platform gives us. We’re the place you always come back to from your adventures to unload your loot, buy stuff and chat with your friends. It also allows us to really connect with our players, because they can have a direct influence on what gets developed and attached. Why would we not listen to people and build what they want? We already know it will be enjoyed.

I like the concept and idea behind this as a social game.
Some suggestions I have for the game:
Sports - non-interactive.
Something that a social community might like to have is a sports team or 2 or 3 that are based upon a zone or area of population. You mentioned being able to buy a house. Having a sports team that is based upon the areas that are populated would be a fun thing to have. This could be something players could go and watch! Bet on! purchase clothing items for! etc...
Sports - interactive.
Another fun thing would be to have interactive sports games where players are involved in the teams. Be it from a coaching level or actually being a plyer on the team. I think there is a free 2 play football game that is coming out soon that you may be able to form a partnership with and play their game ( java based platform ) within some sports complex within Onverse.
Pick up games where there player lobby actually sits in the stands awaiting their turn in the que for a pick up game would be fun. Allowing to go in as solo or with a pre-agreed upon team would add flexibility and fun to the game. Even if it is just a race game or some other form of sports. Allowing the community to participate by watching the game from the stands would also help promote the virtual world aspect of it.
Puzzle games.
Something that Myth Online tried to do. I would be interested in seeing a weekly puzzle game that comes out ( nothing outrageous ) or a monthly one that maybe has more depth to it. Something along the lines of Myth in its level of complexity or maybe have an ongoing sleuth game where you try to determine who did the deed ( does not have to be murder if you are working for a G rating ).
Come to think of it. You may be able to tie in some of the more interesting roles in the RW like
Fire Fighter ( a mini-game to put out fires and rescue cats )
Detective game that has you chasing down criminal who dunits.
Helicopter Pilot that puts out fires and rescues people in distress ( floods or large buildings )
Police officer patrolling the streets for speeders or capturing thiefs making a run for it ( racing type game )
And others that I do not have the time to write down right now.
All in all this sounds really fun and a good FAMILY type game to have. Good luck and hope to see more of this in the future.
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
Hmm .... where is the game? where is the content?
I tried this a bit, and I have to say, I was very disappointed.
The journal makes it sound like you're "rewarded" for exploring and talking, but the only way you can earn in-game money is by catching butterflies, digging up rocks and smashing boxes. Oh, but if you explore, you'll find more... butterflies. A lot of the resources I found required "higher" level tools, though the level 3 tools can only be purchased by handing them real cash to buy a separate, in-game currency. In fact, about half of the things I ran across could only be purchased with real money.
After about an hour of playing around with the tutorials and catching butterflies, I had 100 PP. To get a single level 2 tool, you need 500. Whee.
I was also stuck wandering through the ugliest hallways I've ever seen to look for an "open" apartment, but after looking through three floors with four wings, I couldn't find anything. So much for getting a free apartment.
Regardless of what the people behind Onverse want to call it, it's not an MMO... it's a 3D chat room with homes and clothes. And it's not a very good one either.
Thank you very much! All great ideas and very close to where we are headed for this. Keep in mind we are a 5-man indie team, but we're growing and the content will grow as well. Thank you again for the ideas.
~Sweet~
Stay away unless your a kid or young teen! Nothing remotely suited for the older genre and the graphics ZZZZZ I think Torque is the engine? But still a kiddie game.
"Amazing how you can do without the essentials of life, so long as you have the luxuries".
I have some ideas to improve the game, like:
-new secret places
-new places at "Ancient cultures"
-more prizes, like clothes at "Trials of the Ancients"
-more staff to win at "Temple of Suul"
-mazes like "Under the sea " with underground secret doors or "Space flight" with spaceship cars
-a bigger inventory
- some more pp houses,me and lots of my friends are trying to find houses with a high pp price but all of them are sold. Good luck to the game and thank you again for this amazing game !!!
