Today's MMO

Hello, welcome to my ramblings, I want to talk to you today, about a typical MMO. Whether it's sci-fi, fantasy, modern, or anything else, they are all so different, but so much the same.

While every MMO will claim to be innovative and special, they really are not. If you have played more than one MMO, you'll eventually get what I'm talking about. Lets take in example... World of Warcraft, now I wont bash it, but I will point a few things out, it, like so many others, is played by millions of people. Although, I really don't get why, the game is played basically the same way you launch the game itself... that is, you mouse over an icon, and click. Sure, you can use keybindings, but does that really change things? No, now, instead of clicking you press a button... big improvement.

Okay, so you've now read what I'm sick of, so tell me, does that sound like every MMO you've ever played? Every game has a few differences, class, race, story, graphics, animations... but thats it. How can games claim to be so innovative and new, when all you do, is press a few buttons, and in the case of PvP, run in circles and press buttons faster. There are free to play games, there are pay to play games, and there are games with a cash shop like system... that is one of the things that rarely changes.

So tell me, have I hit home yet? No? Well then, read on. Some people will read this and think "You know, he's right!" and others will say "OMG NO WAI DID HE JUST INSULT TEH MMO WORLDS?!?!?!1" And some will fall in between those two lines, but tell me, does the following sound like you on one of your game nights?

Dramatization

It's a cool night, there is a party somewhere I decided not to go to, because I have  INSERT GENERIC MMO NAME  and I got my mountain dew, and my bedpan ready to go. Me and my guild just got enough members to run the hardest dungeon in the game we got to the first boss, I press 8... 2... 5... damnit, Tommyzorz died. We wait for him to get rezzed as we all restore our health and curse at the healer for letting someone die. I have to get off now, my mom is such a bitch for making me get off at midnight... damn her.

So, do you think that sounds like you? No? How about if you change a few names and get rid of the bedpan? Still no? That's surprising. Of course, not everyone doesn't have a life, some of the brightest people I know play MMO's, in moderation. Now, I used to love MMORPG's, up till the point where I realized how they are actually played (See above...) and maybe, I would be much happier to announce that billions of people play MMO's every day, if it weren't for the fact that... well, you've read the above right? Then you know.

Now, let me list a few things about your typical mmo...

  1. You click a button, or press a key to do just about everything.
  2. The communities, as a mass (not all), are typically racist, egotistical, and generally stupid.
  3. Most developers are greedy and just want your money so you can play their shoddily made game.
  4. An over abundance of profanity is used, canceling it's original purpose.

That sound familiar? No? Yes?

Now, this may just sound like the ramblings of an idiot, but, this is my view, nothing else, do you agree? it doesn't matter if you do, it's an opinion. Some people may say "This guy proves a good point," others may say "This guys a douche, he doesn't get the intensity of these MMO's." Again more might say, "Why doesn't he stop talking about it and make his own online game or something?" Well, I have, or the idea at least, I'm no computer genius, nor do I know any, so it will stay an idea forever.

Please, feel free to comment, cuss, yell, get pissed off, make fun of me, whatever floats your boat. If you feel like saying something pointless, do it, if you have something valid to input say it, that is your choice after all.

I have to agree with you that developers only want your money as in the case of how Blizzard markets WoW. You get only certain rare items from buying the card game and so on.

But we have to understand that the gaming industry is no different from other industries when it comes to a main goal - to make money. That can never be erased.

And yes, many MMO's claim to be innovative but they hardly are. I guess the exception to that would have to be Atlantica Online. Their turn-based battle system was like a splash of water to someone who's sick of hack-and-slash.  Now I'm not advocating the game, I'm only saying my opinion.

I hardly get into MMO's nowadays. AO is the exception for me.

I am simply myself, no more and no less. And I only want to be free.

I agree with you, that, thats what they want, to make money. But I atleast want to enjoy what I likely paid for... it'd be like buying tasteless icecream, useless. Really, how many times can you enjoy chocolate icecream before it becomes flavorless, how many times can you mouse over a simply drawn icon and click before it gets old?

    MMORPG

The RPG and especially the G have always been the weakest link.  Not one i can think of that is even close to good enough to play solo,  even if you could have "smart AI" toons helping you do whatever.

So I guess that leaves the MMO.

What makes or breaks a MMO RPG,SCI-FI,Shooter,  whatever is the MMO part of the equation.  Not the game itself.  Though the game does have to be at least not be craptacular.

RPG's in total? Including ones for consoles... like Fable?

I suppose, for MMO's in general, people just get a thrill out of taking down monsters with a guy they met from Australia who can't type anything but leet.

I'm still searching for that perfect MMO thats more than just clicking the same buttons every battle... But that style of game will likely not be found till some game company decides "Hey, I'm going to make a game that actually takes some skill, is enjoyable, and isn't just sitting in a lobby waiting for a game to pop up!"

Or some internet Einstein figures out how to send that much information out around the globe in a fraction of a sec and still be able to be playable to the masses.  From a guy living in Japan and playing wow from release to well into BC i know how horrible that .25 secs to register the spell interput key can be.

Pretty sure the ideas are out there,  just not the technology to make it happen on a profitable scale.

Well I dont really agree with you. Cause all MMO's will forever be the same. Which is... grind, level up,grind,BRICKWALL. Yes thats right if you play long enough you hit that wall were you reflect on your gaming experiance and say "whata waste of life".

Well I mean if you have no life to actually hit that brick wall in the first place then it really wasnt a waste then was it? Im just going to tell you. Ive never hit any wall in any MMO.

    *EDIT*

So until I hit one of those walls in any MMO, I will keep playing them... no matter how unoriginal they become. Cause I get one of those "I got nothing else to do" moments occasinally and thats where I pull out my MMO fix.
