It's been almost an entire year since beta application were handed out to anyone eager and ever since then I haven't heard nothing....I'm going to refrain using the word vaporware for another year of two if I continue to hear nothing......but I'm just curious to see what's going on right now?

Still in closed beta. Developing continues.

No one is going to release a "big" MMO until BlizZard tips their hand. Wish it wasn't so... but it is what it is.

    Umm..?

Did I ask if any game will ever be as successful as WoW?

    No.

You know, this is one of the reasons why I stopped playing MMOs almost all together.....these games and you ppl are so one-dimensional.

Well I was just calling it how it is. I've downloaded and played  at least ~60 of the "leading" MMOs that are on here and maybe some that are even more steathily hidden. Lots, and, lots, and, lots, of time has been spent seeing these games. My deal is that I play each one until there is a big "game" changer". Like a mount. Special skills, you know the second level after the intro quests/Mouse/Keyboard crap. This results in about 3-12 hours played depending on the game and the content.

Most of the content out there is crap. There is no style. There is no driving force, no vision, no world I WANT to be in.

I'm tired of this SLAP SLAP SLAP fighting mechanic. Make it real time.  Someone dodging actually dodges.

    Damnit! Gonn Rambling again!

60 leading MMO ? We probably don't have the same definition of leading. Perhaps, if you couldn't find a single MMO you wanted to play, i would suggest you look for another type of game...

Umm...? I'd probably punt the attitude and just discard the opinion if it didn't pique my interest. The response was honest, and probably accurate, to some extent. I hear you as the comic book guy in the Simpsons...nice work!

MMO is the right type of game, just very few people getting it right these days.

Abstract the game but assume there is a tank and healer, you know how awesome it is when a run just goes right? Everyone's done their job and these people, whom you may have never played with before, came together and got it done. There's a very good feeling of satifaction from that, that is the "win" in MMOs. The reason I said such a high number, is because I am out there looking for what's next. WoW did a lot of things very well early on against the current standards of the day. Hopefully in my endless beta/alpha test cycles I'll see something good!

    ...

The guy's right. If u look at the list of games 80% of it are fantasy MMORPGs and half of them are alot like WoW ... Hell they even made a free WoW clone! (Runes of magic). There's nothing new and innovative nowadays with some very few exceptions - Atlantica OL, Maple story, Air rivals (the only good fligh sim MMO, and NO, EVE is not a flight sim!)

Its really hard to find a MMO that will make u immerse in the universe, maybe its just me, maybe im gettin old or its not that interesting since im playing from home now and not with my friends in an internet cafe... but for the last year i havent played a MMO that will catch my attention for more than 2-3 days. Hope Earthrise will do its magic.

Like was said earlier, still in closed beta although it seems to exclude the outside public right now. I think they had to push back opening beta to a wider audience to adjust the combat or other unforseen circumstances we don't know about. I really believe ER's beta is going to be much more of a "soft-release" than a rigorous beta test.

But the fact that you haven't heard anything since you applied months ago means you haven't really been looking. Since applications for beta began they released several videos (including in game footage with UI), over 30 additional Questions of the Week that talk about a myriad of game information, countless more interviews, several more IRC chats, dozens of additional screenshots, several new dev journals, etc... We even learned GNi is hosting the servers. Most of this information you will find on the official forums, you wont be seeing  a lot here yet.

If you are only looking for information specifically on the beta then the most you will get is that they will send out invites when they feel it is ready to open testing to a wider audience. Recently they said they are doing good with the testing and builds they have now and when they feel enough progress has been made they will broaden it. There are many of us waiting right now, but they say patience is a virtue.

Open Beta's these days are a marketing tool.  No company is willing to risk losing moronic customers who join betas expecting a finished game, then get on the internet to tell the world what a broken POS the game is.

You can bet this game will be polished and damn near release when they finally do an open beta.  At best they will use beta for server load testing and initial optimization.

Has anyone heard if the release has been pushed to next year yet?  Here we are, almost mid-October, and MMORPG.com still has 2009 as the estimated date.  I'm guessing we are looking at Q2 2010 unless they are truly in polish mode already.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

No word on release at all, but I agree that 2009 is unlikely. However, it could be that MastHead is just keeping a low profile compared to other studios and that the game is much further along than we can tell from released info. There should be some new vids coming out in the next month or so, maybe that will give us a better picture.

I guess we will see.  The game still has to go gold, then off to reproduction for about a month so it can hit store shelves.  This would need to happen almost immediately for a late December release if you factor in 30 days for a basic open beta.

Bummer.  It seems like I am always looking forward to 'the next year' for a decent game that never seems to come.  lol!

They are in closed beta and progressing well. I would recommend watching their website. Sure there has not been much action in the last 2  months, but to call it vapourware would be extremelly premature and surprising considering they have developed their own engine and are budgeting carefully.

As a new comer to the market, Masthead must make sure to provide a well olished game to compete with other names on the market. The game must be well finished to make sure to provide their customers with satisfaction.
