"DotA" stands for Defense of the Ancients.

"HoN"stands for Heroes of Newerth.

The Biggest Differences between HoNand DotA:

On the technical level, Dota is a custom map made with the WarCraft 3 map editor. As such, it has many disadvantages in terms of versatility and stability. There are some things that just wouldn't be possible or practical to implement in Dota. One infamous example is crit/evasion detection. I'm sure there's some roundabout way to detect them, but it would be a pretty tacky system and just not worth the effort.

The netcode of HoN is also much better, with easily accessed dedicated servers, the ability to reconnect after a drop and all around better performance in terms of ping. Dota has options to get around lag, but obviously it's inferior to full integration of the features into the game itself.

Dota is updated more often and better supported. Even months since beta, HoN is still way behind in balance and general fixes. The most glaring drawback of course is its far more limited hero pool, which really hurts the game's balance and fun factor. In a few months HoN might catch up to Dota in hero pool, but we're comparing the here and now.

Finally, there's the obvious cost issue. Dota is a free map for a game that most of you probably have, while HoN is a stand alone game that will retail at $30.

Above all, whichdo you prefer? HoN, DotA or both ?

I played Dota a few years ago, before wow even release.

That was loads of fun.  Want to play the warcraft custom map again, but can't find my warcraft cd.

I want to play the first screen shot of both of them. I will sign up right now and pay a monthly fee.

I don't want to play the second screen shot of either one of them, and won't play for free.

  • I spend what I consider to be a good amount of time on DoTA. Especially considering what DoTA really is, a custom map for Warcraft 3. And, I'm not proud of it but I can easily say I play enough to know every Hero and every hero's abilities, even going so far as to which button is the default hotkey for an ability. So while I may not be a DoTA pro, I do love the game.

But this Heroes of Newerth everyone is talking about now, It looks like something that would be of interest to me. Being as it is not an MMO, I wouldn't pay monthly for it. But a one time fee of 30 or even 40/50 dollars for the boxed game is fine.

So basically I'd like ask the OP, or anyone who has played the game enough to know, a few questions.

    Is there a monthly fee?
What do they do about people who habitually leave games (regardless of reason)?
Is there something to balance out teams, if you have a feeder?
    Is there ladder ranking?
Is it the same map over an over with 3 lanes, or is there some variety?

    Thanks

No monthly fee. Just a one time purchase of 30 dollars.

When you leave, you gain 1 disconnect in your stats (All stats are persistent, so people will be able to see that you have left games, and if you have too high leave percentage, you will not be able to join "No Leavers" games)

There's nothing to balance out a feeder, and there shouldn't really be, but you can vote out people, if they feed.

There will be ladder ranking, and there's also public skill rating.

There's 1 5v5 map and 2 3v3 maps, if I remember correctly, but people usually play the 5v5 map (The same layout as DotA)

  • Yeah that's what I mean for a way to balance the game if there is a feeder. Having a kickvote or a way to make a player leave. It's not even worth playing games where someone goes 0-5+ and won't leave, which in DoTA is just about every public LC game.

Thanks I will defiantly buy this game when it comes out in the USA.

    No problem.

You can already buy it from their own site now, and you'll get a fancy "shield" next to your name, to show that you bought it in beta, and you'll get to write in colours, and a taunt ability.

Just go to http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/ and make a user, and then you'll be able to buy it for 30 bucks online.

Dota vs HoN vs LoL vs Demigod

Dota is surprisingly getting less population these days. Wonder if people are turning to these.

Neither. I choose League of Legends (LoL for short, I know).

League of Legends if for no other reason then because the community has way fewer "type A" personalities rage quitting than HoN or DoTA.

Sort of prefer HON's disconnect-tracking and concession votes to LOL's in-it-til-the-end and no concession.  But I also want to try out LoL's crazy advancement system.  But at the same time I think LoL's advancement system doesn't really have a place in a rather skill-centric game.

The thing that surprised me most is how close both games have come to feeling like DOTA.  For years, RTS games struggled to have responsive interfaces, yet here's two games which actually get it right (HoN surprised me the most, since S2 has always had its problems in my eyes, yet HoN is the most genuine clone of a game I've ever played.  Right down to the way the mobs pathfind!)

After playing both for a long period of time i would have to say HoN is much better game than dota.

I love the rating system, stat tracker, netcode, new heroes, almost weekly updates. Hands down HoN is much better then Dota could ever be because of the limitations of the WC3 gaming engine.
