The overall rating in the HIT list is meaningless because it has an oversample vsv the other MMO's.
Btw today it is even now at 55% down vs the opening week.
No Aion is still ranked 4th most played game on xfire and it release as the 4th most played game. It has still held the same position as the second most played MMO since release. Your hate of this Korean success is rather disturbing, maybe we can make another thread about that? ))
I am not surprised by the sales. AION was released with tons of polish. And even though I cancelled my sub (the linear gameplay is not for me, and by linear that is my opinion) I can see why others would prefer it. It's sexy, glitzy with lots of eye candy. The classes are pretty well put together for a PVE/PVP game and the PVP is pretty fun. All this isnt enough for me as I am turning more to sandboxy type games, but AION delivers on it's promises for many.

Most people do not even know about xfire, therefore, they will not trust them with their money over more prominent sites.
It was totally clear to me that Aion will also be a great success in the west. Our whole legion is still enjoying the game - we are now after the free month, still the servers are on full during prime time. The group and solo PvP in Aion is simply one of the most fun things to do - we love it.
So yeah enjoying the game and cant wait to get to the endgame content - from what I heard there is a a lot to do. Oh and people who compare Aion with WoW most proably didnt play it further than maybe 30-35 - and decided already upfront that they will not like it. But to call Aion a grind fest etc. is just ridiculous... if people dont know how to group, or do instances, fight together in one of the many elite regions etc. well I am not surprised they call this game a grinder
I am pretty sure it will not die like Aoc or War did... simply because Aion has already more content than WoW had in its beginning... - and intead of fixing the game they can already work on even more content.

Exactly what it does, Shol. However, some people believe the data for aion is being corrupted. Like gold sellers and botters using the thing, and whatnot.
The number is probably not far from the truth, considering that it had 400k presales. it would make sense that it would do an additional 200-250k once it went live. But like others have said, retention is the key. The key to a game's success is if they are adding more subscriptions then they are losing (I don't think they are). I still say it won't do more then 250k after a few months. A lot of people are just getting burned out on the gameplay. Doesn't even mean the game is bad, it just means the game doesn't have the pull to keep gamers interested at this point in time.
Sales and subscriptions are 2 different things. If this was something like Guild Wars with no sub model then I would give them the benefit of the doubt. As someone stated before, its about longevity, War and Aoc sold more and look how they wound up. I know Aion had a better launch compared to those but astill, let us know how successful you are after 4-6 months.

EDIT: Did a quick search for a link to anywhere that lists the number, however I was not able to. 10-20% of subscribers is usually the concurrent user average. To give an example, EVE has 300k subs and they have an average of about 40k online at once. That puts the concurrent user number at about one-seventh or 14 percent of the total subscriber base.
A game that is brand new is going to have a much higher percentage of its player population online at peaks times simply because the game is still fresh. It is similar to when existing games release an expansions and see a spike in player activity.
More people will be interested in logging in to play and make it next to impossible to compare it to stats of a game that is in between major content releases.
I would expect that nearly every player was logging into aion the first month as much as they possibly could, every day if possible. As time goes on that wave will eventually even out to whatever is the normal average for players to log in per week (I have no idea what that might be).
I'm not sure how 150k = 450k subs, but I don't think you can apply the normal 20% population being online to a new release. I suspect it is much higher than that.

You are right that it's not truly the box sales as much as it is the retention. A 50% retention is fairly 'normal' for these things. I'm both surprised and pleased that Aion appears to be thriving and improving.
A number of developers have stated they saw 70%+ retention rate for their games. I know Mark Jacobs said that was true about daoc and not just shortly after release. Soe said once that EQ saw 60% retention over years. It was something pretty incredible that they have after the game had been out for several years to retain that high. Since wow/eve have continually grown for years I'm sure they are pretty high also.
If Aion was really 50% or lower it would be a very noticable drop in population. Warhammer/Aoc had similar drops after their first month and it was very noticable in game. It sounds like aion is doing much better than that from player experiences in posts.

This means the game was hyped up before launch. The numbers that really matter is the amount of subscribers that resubscribe. I'm one of those 700k they counted and I quit after 3 weeks. Remember that AoC surpassed 700k copies sold, and they still did terrible.

I agree completely. That said - many people love this game and aren't in a hurry to leave.
But touching WoW's number base is just unrealistic. If this game keeps 500k + after Christmas, its safe to say its a very big success.

If Aion was really 50% or lower it would be a very noticable drop in population. Warhammer/Aoc had similar drops after their first month and it was very noticable in game. It sounds like aion is doing much better than that from player experiences in posts.
Aion servers are full now as they were at launch .
So whether some people like it or not this game is doing fine.

This means the game was hyped up before launch. The numbers that really matter is the amount of subscribers that resubscribe. I'm one of those 700k they counted and I quit after 3 weeks. Remember that AoC surpassed 700k copies sold, and they still did terrible.
Does anyone have an official release from Nsoft themselves rather than an IGN report about a Korean website reporter? It just seems very skewed and we all know how Chinese whispers en up. They were the ones also claiming the 3.5M subs number despite Nsoft not actually mentioning anything about it, so I don't exactly trust them.
Yea I am not surprise about theses numbers even after reading all the gloom from the haters. I play Aion and see all the player on my full realm everyday, expecting anything else then high numbers would be ridiculous.

The key to this competition will be the 3M and 6M CCU numbers, as they will show how muchy lasting power this game has.

I agree completely. That said - many people love this game and aren't in a hurry to leave.
But touching WoW's number base is just unrealistic. If this game keeps 500k + after Christmas, its safe to say its a very big success.

MMO Data is all guess work, and is about as accurate as any guess made here. The only time he is ever right is when it comes to games like Tabula Rasa, Auto Assult and MXO - because its hard to be wrong on saying a game has 0 players when everyone knows they had the plug pulled.
