Blizzard goes RMT.

I'm officially disgusted.

(And don't tell me it's ok because some of the money goes to a foundation, if they wanted to give money to a foundation, they should just do so without this crap).

kotaku.com/5397229/blizzard-starts-selling-in+game-world-of-warcraft-pets

It was only a matter of time. Blizzard has just put up a pair of in-game pets for World of Warcraft for sale on the Blizzard Store. Would you pay $10 for a Pandaren Monk or a baby Kel'Thuzad?

Blizzard previously said this:

"The game's Terms of Use clearly states that all World of Warcraft content is the property of Blizzard Entertainment, and Blizzard does not allow 'in-game' items to be sold for real money. Not only do we believe that doing so would be illegal, but it also has the potential to damage the game economy and overall experience for the many thousands of others who play World of Warcraft for fun"

So just like John Smedley, they're full of it.

Get a clue - it starts with pets and cool looking armor and will end with exp potions and that like, as seen on other games before. Disgusting at best :)

I don't play WoW but I've always been against RMT and im pretty surprised Blizzard hopped on that shitty bandwagon...

Until it is anything but cosmetics, it really doesn't matter. It isn't XP/health/mana pots or weapons/armor so whats the deal?

If the most succesful MMO moves towards RMT the rest cant be far behind. Its great to see WOW continues its tradition of "improving" the MMO genre...

    Just to make things clear...

Why should I play inferior games in the first place? Funny how all these other ppl in games like EQ2 also cried 'its only pets, appearance armor etc' and a few weeks later everybody bought AA pots for runs n stuff. But you'll see yourself :)

    WoW Fanboi to the defense!

    Oh wait...

Defending a game on MMORPG.com is like being given a wooden shield, stripped naked and then told to keep yourself alive while a dragon continuously breathes fire on you...

The same argument made about CO's cash shop.

Which is now selling respecs at $12.50 a pop.

    WoW's been RMT for YEARS

    entertainment.upperdeck.com/WoW/en/

What's the difference in selling an unplayable TCG where people buy it for the codes to get Pets/Costumes/Mounts/Etc. and straight RMT?

Are you serious? They say black on white they won't allow the selling of in-game items and bash other companies for doing so when they join Live Gamer. They even donate it "illegal", and now they just do it themselves.

The article you linked is from 2009, prolly to change their stance real quick because they knew they were moving to RMT.

They've been doing this for a long time.

WoW has a TCG. Buy a ton of the cards and you get unique in-game items like pets and mounts. Been on the go for years.

While it's limited to fluff items, no-one really cares .. and despite the paranoia that always drags up the "slippery slope!" argument, I've seen it too often and it never becomes a reality.

Why should you play inferior games?  Why shouldn't you, since you mention EQ2.  If that's not the textbook definition of 'inferior game', I don't know what is.

Hold on, gotta go activate a new credit card to buy an EQ2 toon off stationexchange, brb...

Blizzard is smart. They are very concerned about gameplay. No way will they ever allow RMTs that effect your skills. It will always be cosmentic only.

Keep telling yourself that, that's what people who play EQ and EQ2 said too. Now they're selling XP potions and armor.

My bank just sent me a notice that they offer multiple types of insurance for almost anything I need.

They also offered Remote Digital Storage to help back up everything important to me for a low price.

Looks like my ISP has the same offer...

Oh, and let's not forget that USPS is offering holiday deals on cards, special boxes, and ribbons...

    ...

Every freaking service in the world is offering extra items for purchase... particularly subscription services... and you are upset that Blizzard is now introducing this?

Subscription-only services are dying... this is the next step for them to increase profit... and in some cases save themselves.

Quit acting shocked, insulted, and apalled. You should have seen this coming 5 years ago.

Pull your head out of the ground and start paying attention to the rest of the world.

I think its stupid, but having non-combat pets for sale doesn't affect the game at all except point out who the morons are. That being said, and although I hate slippery slope arguments, I worrry a little that this will turn into items that effect gameplay (xp buffs, gathering or combat gear, pvp bonuses, etc. I see that and I hang up my wowhat for good/

    A witty saying proves nothing.

So theyve been doing this for a while? Guess its alright then...

Everything in a game should be available in game, even vanity.

Can CO respecs also be obtained in-game?

Anyhoo, CO is a skillbased game.

A "respec" there is the equivalent of a complete class change; something few MMOs offer but (if they did) would almost certainly be considered an account transaction and be chargeable.

WoW has Faction, Race, Gender and Name changes available for cash. If they added class changes (something that they have pledged never to do) then they would likely charge for those too.

It's completely uncomparable. How much did it cost your bank to make / protect and use the digital storage system? Prolly a lot.

How much did it cost Blizzard to make that pet? 200$?

RMT is distributed as this thin air, it doesn't have value but entices players to give in, often through peer pressure, game addiction or people are forced to participate to have access to all the content.
