If not Darkfall - Help

RaekRaek Member Posts: 60

Why am I reading so many negative things about Darkfall Online?  It looks cool from all that I can see.  It has a lot of the things I want and things it doesn't have are coming out soon (apparently player shops).

Why is this game doing so poorly and if I shouldn't play it, what should I play?

Here are the things that I like about it thats drawing me in:

Emphasis on PvP (not necesarily open, just pvp that has purpose)

Empasis on Player-run societies (Houses, towns, forts)

Fun Crafting (Putting your signature on things, feeling attached to an item you work hard on)

Large Scale Sandbox Style

What other games offer these things and what about Darkfall am I not seeing?

Darkfall forums are a sewer, and that sewer is that way:

Uh, why would I ask what other games should I look at on the Darkfall forums... that's kinda stupid ya think?

Darkfall is not as bad as the darkfall haters say, nor is it as great as the darkfall fan bois say.

Unfortunately, the worst place to go to find out about how good or bad a game is ...is a forum. They are often radicalized to one side or another. I Know a lot of players said that Mortal Online is an alternative to Darkfall, however I dont know much about this game.

    Good Luck

DarkFall is a great game. Like all games, it has its share of pros and cons which ends up being a matter of opinion as to what is good and what is not. Full Body Loot may be a killer for many for exemple (and then those players are told to "go back to vanilla WoW carebear" by other players) But anyway, I suggest you look at some DarkFall videos on youtube, perhaps try some Single-Player RPG (Elder Scroll Oblivion for exemple) and if you like those, well go for it.

Though I have to admit that the lack of free trial is a real killer in this case. Also, there's a special going on right now, buy the game+6 months for $87 (you save 30% I think). Otherwise the client alone is $50 (+1 month free).  Just make sure you research the game a bit more before you buy (should you decide to).

As for the complains on the forum, most are made by ex-players (or non-players in some case) who have experienced the game during the first 2 months (it basically felt like a Closed Beta with all the horrible crash, lag and hackers). They never gave DarkFall a second chance and would rather bash the game to kill time (though I admit that paying another $50 may prevent many from giving DF a second chance).

I think Darkfall needs to be experienced first-hand, you can't tell anyone they will love/hate it.

The one thing I will say is that it is a genuine departure from the typical "WOW clone" MMO experience, and this difference is a large part of why some people trash the game. The other thing I'll say is it has one of the best if not the best MMO worlds I've ever experienced - the world and the environment effects are fantastic and you will gape in awe at your first sunrise and sunset.

My advice is, try it for yourself.

EU -> NA transfers are free until 4th November and you don't need to buy another client. In fact you can transfer without even an active sub.

This game seriously needs a trial, like another poster said the haters and fanbois just give you so many different answers its really impossible to know how everything is without having first hand experience.

If the game appeals to you, go pay the 50 bucks and play it.  Not like  you have to sign up for a year (though they have a great 6 month deal going right now it seems)

    If not, go play EVE

You know what. If you like a game give it a try. Don't listen to other people. You won't know if you like it or not until you try it. Why take the chance on missing out on a game that might be the most fun game that you played in awhile. I play what looks good to me. If i don't like it after a month, i put it away and wait for the next one. All the things you said, the game has.

I really do want to try it out.  Just really don't wanna waste 50 dollars just like that.  I mean sheesh, I'm a poor college kid.

I guess what my final question will be before I go and buy this game (because I'm just getting more and more bored each day) would be what are alternatives to Darkfall?

Are there any games that are somewhat like it?  Or is it really the only game of its kind?  What can people tell me about Mortal Online (other than that its a only-get-into-beta-by-paying-50-bucks deal)

  • IchmenIchmen Member UncommonPosts: 1,228

no offence but no one can hold your hand and tell you which game YOU should play, thats your choice and entirely up to you to decide.

check the videos on youtube (lots of them) read views and opinons posted by people (tho take them with salt..) and decide if you want to pay the money for DFo..

many people hate the game because of the way its managed others hate it for being ganked while playing.

ofcourse lots hate the fanboys who spammed every thread about it... so its really a hate vs hate group mentality when it comes to forum posts here and on DFo. (which is where the salt comes in, use statements as a foundation to make your choice not as a 100% reason to do A or B)

ultimately there are great games out there you just have to figure out what you want and what game comes close to some or all of your desires. (kind of like dating i guess... only without booze.. dinner.. or movies O_o...)

sorry this post cant really direct to you A or B of your topic ... but either or is your call not mine or anyone elses to make

This pretty much. $50 is less than half of a big night out on the booze.

There have been people agent this concept since DF was announced.

And with 90% of all MMOs beeing clones of eachothers......the last % sticks out and make it easy to target them with opinions. I mean, no levels, no classes and no xp is enough to make most MMO gamers to begin to tremble and scream "but how can it work then?, it must be impossible and stupid!"

    Its just a game : )

Most of the people that play the game do agree there is heavy emphasis on PvP.  I haven't seen anyone actually state the pvp forms any purpose beside gloating to your tombstoned opponent afterwards.
Empasis on Player-run societies (Houses, towns, forts)
There is little emphasis on houses, towns, or forts.   90% of the forts are empty because there is no point to being there when everyone in the clan gets a message that an invader has entered.  Many also contain bugs that the player base happily exploits and makes them impossible to defend.   Houses don't mount to much except an easy way to teleport to a " safe place ".
Fun Crafting (Putting your signature on things, feeling attached to an item you work hard on)
From what I understand the crafting is rather dull.  There is no economy as it is not safe to trade outside the clan.
    Large Scale Sandbox Style
Everyone says the only thing to do in DF is PvP.  I guess it is sandbox if all you like to do is eat dirt.

What other games offer these things and what about Darkfall am I not seeing?
Most don't because there isn't a playerbase big enough to make it profitable.

Most of what I stated can be found in the DF forums.  Just dig through a few of the topics.

The" red text" is a very narrow minded picture of what DF has to offer.  Yes!, violence is what holds the DF world togeather, just as it is in WoW.  Its the glue that make everything else very important : )

One thing must be said about this video, it was taped in February when DarkFall still had that Closed Beta Feeling even though it was released.

I know this is probably a daft thing to say, but you ever thought about not gaming and just getting on with your studying??

I wonder how many tins of beans $50 would get you?

  • RaekRaek Member Posts: 60

Haha.  Well, I'm just gonna go get it.  I'll let ya'll know what I think but I doubt any of you care ;).

And while I am busy with studies, girlfriend, fraternity, I still like to have games as a way to wind down if you know what I mean.  Lately I haven't had that.

    Thanks for all your input.

Darkfall when you look at it really hard ignoring its past [which is where most of the hate came from] Is a ok game it is a real attempt it seems to create a PvP focussed sandbox game [of which there are very few good ones], so yea give it a go but be prepared for majour bugs glitches and unacountable losses in items and skillpoints. Afterall Darkfall is still a very new MMO with high aspirations as such most of the content promised has either not been enabled yet as they are not ready or are out there but in a weakend form.

Will this mean Darkfall will fail?

No it doesant mean that all you need to do is look at EvE when it started out.

EvE had something like 4000 subscribers and most of the features in game were place holders till a more detailed system was writain [such as the so-called Missile Nerf]. Or were not in the game at all and at best only hinted at if at all.

So i say If you want try Darkfall now go ahead. But if you want to wait a while for some more of the bugs to be crushed and more content adden then wait a few months and then have another look like you are doing now.

    Good Luck

As to the Studying aspect i have to say that this should be your main prioraty so be carefull that MMO gaming doesant affect your grades.

=) see I knew it was a daft thing to say.

Now I'm a gaming father, unfortunately my oldest son who is now in college has followed my bad example and has been playing MMO's since he saw me in EQ1, the leech however uses the old tactic of "OH look dad there's this really cool new MMO coming out, maybe we should both play it, but I'm a bit short on cash this month, any chance you could get it for me and pay the subs"

Darkfall is pretty damn impressive. You will be like wtf on a few things, until you get used to it.

I think it will be the fantasy equivalent of Eve, if the dev's continue to improve the game.
