That people will pay a subscription for this game? .... Been playing it for 6 hours and i must say its the worst gaming experience ive had in a MMO yet.

Quest Online, if you want to make atleast a little money you would have to make it another f2p mmo with item shop.

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.

Bear in mind that the current model enables them to get money out of hopeful people before they quit in disgust. If it was f2p with a shop, nobody would spend any money at all.

even if it was f2p runes of magic would be a way better choice, more classes, alot more polished, an actual dual role system, way more content, and well not this buggy. 2 years to get basic features in game is really too much so i have to say, the game would be f2p or have prices reduced in less than 6 months after release.

Do you think it'll be around in 6 months?

I personally was dying to like it, and I just can't bring myself to play it anymore. I can't imagine what neutral parties who simply come with an open mind are going to feel like.

As an indie developer, there's no cash reserves to fall back on, probably, and I couldn't envision another investor, one wise enough to do a bit of due diligence beforehand, putting a dime into it.

There is no one area of the game where it is a "best of breed" or can even claim to be in the top 50% of the other games out there. I just can't really see it's appeal other than being "new". And you have to figure, being "new" will eventually get old.

As I've said in other posts about Alganon, the game has less value for a consumer than Runescape in my opinion. They might be able to sucker a few folks in if they adopted a F2P+subscription model like Runescape's, as I'm sure a few folks would be willing to plunk down $5/month for a while. Such a model would finally give the folks at Alganon something to distinguish them from everyone else.

    10,000 people at $5/month beats 1,000 people at $15.

An MMO needs a sizable community or it's doomed. You're not going to get much of one the way they're going at it right now.

Well firstly, runescape is a great game and seriously has alot more content and depth that half the p2p games out right now things is people play for 5 mins and bash it but if you played for awhile you would know its a good game, not attacking you just saying in general thats what happens. But anyways on topic, i think just having a subscription fee makes alot of people go away, having the freedom to log in whenever you want and not having to worry about your sub money going to waste is a big pro. Unless they go warhammer style where you get capped at lvl10 and then have the option to subscribe that might work but ye going f2p really should be the main option. At the moment there's less than 4k forum members, for a game that was going to be released 2 weeks ago that is bad even in game population is low, normally i only see 10 or so people on my side. Maybe the open beta and recent advertising campaign might bring people but ye i doubt it.

No way in hell I would play for this game, It  should be F2P not P2p. The music put you to sleep. So does the game play. I kept trying to keep from nodding off.  Maybe if I cant sleep I will log in and listen to the music til i nod off at my desktop. Played for like 20mins, I couldnt force my self to go on as I was falling a sleep.

I've been playing Algonon for about a week now and I must admit I started getting into it, but after some big patch last nite, all the chars got de-powered Now it is ridiculous. Before the patch you could level up on mobs 2-3 levels above you.  Now you are LUCKY to stay alive after fighting your same level. I got rid of it about 3 hours ago.  Good riddance!!!

    It is what it is!

I never bash games...EVER.  But I have to bash this one.  It is a miserable failure and simply had nothing at all to offer especially for a p2p game.  I mean even the character creation screen was choppy, laggy, and unfinished.  The fonts are extremely small and broken.  On top of that there was nothing I was compensating for that was special.

Most people seem to be complaining about the polish, and this is the thing that seems to be getting the least amount of attention too like Character customization is really bad and lacks alot in options but seems like devs wanna keep it that way, whatever sails there boat i guess. But i have to say there really ignoring polish and thats what's gonna piss alot of people off than the little bugs they actually seem to work on.

You mean like the Float Jump bug... nothing says immersion like jumping 5000 feet off a mountain and floating like a feather down to the ground.

I also like that dying and releasing brings you to a black and white corpse run... never seen that before!

I wasn't bashing Runescape. I think RS's subscription price is perfect for what it offers. I don't think they could get away with any more, quite honestly.

And I think Alganon offers less than Runescape in terms of value to the consumer. That's all I'm trying to say. It's possible that in a few years time Alganon might offer something worthy of a $15 subscription. But I really don't think they'll ever make it that far if they stick with $15/month.

I honestly had no idea this game was going to be subscription-based until yesterday. I'm surprised. Even if you like the game, that seems a little much. It's probably going to go free a little bit after launch.

Yeh sorry i didn't really mean to attack you was just saying in general, but ye i know what you mean. I'm kinda giving up on this game now, i made a thread on official forums asking if people would play the game if it was free and well it didnt end well, fanbois won that one. Oh well lets just see how it goes.

Always sad day when a game goes f2p. I think this is headed down that path. And runescape although it's old and crusty and terrible gameplay it has lots of skills and things to do. Easy to get into. Pretty sad day when you are thinking abotu subbing to runescape though.

p.s. been playing rs on and off for 8+ years

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

  • BlazzBlazz Member Posts: 321

Hmmm... after playing a bit, I can say this isn't worth the $15 a month.

It's buggy, sure, but it isn't even well polished and buggy. Warhammer Online would be what I call a well-polished, buggy game. The polish I'm talking about is in the form of "Oh, you're an Elf, well, these are Elves. This is what Elves do. Welcome to Elf-land"

In Alganon, it sort of just plonks you into the world and expects you to know what to do (which is funny, because most people who play it will be thinking "oh, quest people" straight away, due to its high resemblance to WoW, and actually WILL know what to do)

I am playing EVE and it's alright... level V skills are a bit much.

You all need to learn to spell.

Heheh. I was going to post here asking if that was you who made the post. The avatar and all...

"Going F2P" to many implies that the game has failed to a certain extent. The game's hard-core early adopters will never admit such a thing.

I saw that article at Massively, and I just had to realize that this game is doomed. The developers are a bit unbelievable with that "we're being compared to the greatest-selling MMO of all time" spin Allen gave regarding WoW-clone charges. That just told me these guys have nothing to offer but high-grade BS.

One funny thing came from this though, some fanboy on official forums posted my reply to the article and was like "Dustystrike you've been exposed!!! you want this game to go down and blahblahblah" i literally fell off my chair laughing lol.The community is being very ignorant too, whenever i see someone talk about wow in game the fanbois come running down on them and defend alganon with so much bs its unbelievable especially considering many of them are mature people. As for other articles, anyone else notice they never put the bad rep ones on there mainsite lol? plus these articles seem to have the same questions and answers as the others so usually never nothing new.

Wow... David Allen actually stated that no one's called Alganon a WoW rip-off on the forums... as in the official forums? I didn't read through the whole interview (too painful)... but if he actually said that.

    Pardon my language, but bullshit.

I was following Alganon for a while before they even announced it on mmorpg.com - many months, in fact - and people were *often* questioning and/or calling out the similarities to WoW. I said myself in a post or two that with how similar the game looked, graphically and in some of the names chosen, that it was going to get a lot of such commentary once they went more public with it.

The more rabid fans were in full-on spin and denial mode trying to insist that it was completely unique, etc, against all evidence and plain old common-sense.

... and he actually had the balls to say no one on the forums called it a WoW rip-off? Wait wait... let me guess: "no one used those specific words"... Maybe that's how he's spinning it?

If he's seriously using that argument... the man is a liar and may well earn himself a place among Smedley, McQuaid, Tasos and that dude from AoC.  Not good company to be in for sure, unless he's going for notoriety.

Unbe-freaking-lievable. Do all these people think that people following MMOs are completely blind? Or maybe they're just bilnd to those who don't just buy into everything they say without scrutiny. Then again, you have to assume a degree of gullibility in people if you think you can put something like Alganon or, to be fair, RoM or Allods out and expect people to not notice the striking similarities to another wildly popular MMO.

FFS... just come clean, be honest and say something like "You know what... yes, we are using WoW's graphical style, because we really like it and feel it serves the look and feel of our world well. We're also sticking very closely to WoW's gameplay mechanics because we believe those work well with our game setting and gameplay as well. We hope that people can look past those similarities and enjoy the game for what it is, not only what it looks or plays like".

It's weak and a bit cop-outish (again, lacking the creativity to make something more unique), but at least it's honest.

But then again, to do that, people would say "well, if your game looks and plays similarly to WoW, and has a similar subscription fee while still lacking many of your hyped features, then why don't we just play WoW?"... So of course, they have to spin it some other way.

Here's my question and his answer, go figure.

David Allen, you were the mind behind the acclaimed Horizons, which to many was a huge step forward in the innovation of the genre, but now you're behind a game that many are calling the biggest WoW ripoff ever made. How does it feel to go from being the hope of many to being looked down upon? (question by Gabby)

I've spent the last four years with a great team building one of the only independent gaming studios in the industry that owns all of its technology, is privately financed, founder majority owned, and has created a game being compared to the most successful MMOG in history. I have yet to hear anyone who has played Alganon for any duration call it a "WoW ripoff", and I have yet to feel "looked down upon" by anyone that has experienced firsthand the amount of effort, talent, and determination it takes to make an MMOG.

The original Horizons was a great concept, but (now) I don't know of any company that could have delivered everything it was supposed to be. Yet, players ate it up, and at one time it was the most anticipated MMOG. Today, our privately financed, independent gaming studio has produced an MMOG that is being compared to the most successful MMOG in history, and it's a bad thing? The great thing is that players who spend time in Alganon are finding a sense of community and fun that they don't see in other games.

I regularly spend time in game talking to players, watching, and I don't see the hatred, spitefulness, and utter garbage that's being spewed out by numerous gamers who seem to be more interested in the sound of their keyboard than common sense. While we admit this beta version of the game still has some bugs (fewer and fewer every day), most people who actually play the game like Alganon. They like it a lot. And they are forming a community of gamers that enjoys playing together without spewing hatred at one another. It's a wonderful thing.

    Wow.

    Just.... wow.

The spin and utter BS in that response is staggering.  Again, people called out Alganon's very obvious similarities to WoW on a regular basis on their official forums for *months* prior to its official announcement. David Allen's lying through his teeth, plain and simple.... or he doesn't read his own forums.

The bit about the original Horizons not being something any developer could have delivered on carries a lot of irony... Apparently, Quest Online was unable to deliver on all of Alganon's original design either... How much of Alganon's original design and defining ideas were cut or post-poned to make it for release? How much actually will be in release? Yeah. Good game, David.

As for the spin-tastic response of how their "independently financed company" is creating a game being compared to the most successful... blah blah... Can I have a /facepalm, please? Thank you. I don't think statements of how your MMO looks and feels like a poorly executed carbon-copy of a successful MMO is something to be proud of, David. FFS.

Are you sure they don't have Gaute Godager handling their PR under David Allen's name? Because that's some AoC Launch  calibre BS right there.

problem comes with that, is that they can now be sued more easier. With a online Confession

Yeh i guess there gonna have to keep on denying these facts so blizzard doesn't sue them, but really there's more than enough proof so what's the point?

Good point. Though I'd love to see the expression on the Judge's face when someone representing QO would hold up a screenshot from Alganon and one from WoW and say "Clearly, your Honor, there is no similarities at all between my client's game, and the prosecution's, and this is purely a frivolous lawsuit".

I personally couldn't care less if they hijacked the entire WoW map, UI and NPCs, so long as they made something new and interesting using that well-established tool-set.

As such, I just roll my eyes when I hear "WoW Clone". It's not the UI and Graphics that are going to make/break any game. It's the gameplay, offering something unique that no other game has, and how you foster community.

Since Alganon doesn't actually offer anything for the latter, that's why I think Alganon's doomed more than anything else.

Well.. I think "WoW Clone" is overused as well... but in a few cases, I can at least understand its use, such as MMOs that seem to be designed to look as much like it as they can get away with. If the shoe fits...

That said, I agree with your last sentiment... If you're going to go that route, at least have something new and interesting to bring to the table. Alganon promised a lot of interesting and, indeed, rare - if not unique - features. But, as in several other cases we've seen recently, it seems that when it comes down to the wire, a number of those features need to be cut before launch. A lot of developers seem to have a problem over-reaching it seems. Of course, MMO players being as unforgiving as they are, it seems Alganon's first impression may well have been wasted before they made it (hooray for beta tests...) .

Wondering how many more times that's going to happen
