The year 2010 is right around the corner and people are already expecting great success. It's simple, What new mmos will succeed and who will fail ? Yes, it is subjective but having an opinion is why we are here in the first place. Here is a list of some of the 2010 mmo releases. Personally I am banking on The Old Republic and FFXIV to be the best new mmos next year. The rest will pretty much fail miserably. Hopefully I am wrong with the fail part!
1. Star Trek Online (Cryptic Studios)
2. The Old Republic (Bioware,Lucas Arts)
3. Earthrise (Masthead Studios)
4. Global Agenda (Hi-Rez Studios)
5. DC Universe (Sony Online Entertainment)
6. The Agency ( Sony Online Entertainment)
7. JumpGate Evolution (NetDevil Studios)
8. Dust514 (CCP)
9. FFXIV (Square Enix)
10. TERA (Bluehole Studios)
Comments
Add to that TERA (Bluehole Studios) apparently scheduled for next year in NA/EU.
WoW will succeed, all else will fail.......
Trolls = Hardcore
Fanbois = Carebears
The only posts I read in threads are my own.
I think that Global Agena and the new Star Wars will have a good chance of being pretty amazing
I have a feeling SW:TOR will be relatively successful.
I'm not quite sure about the rest.
Playing: World Of Warcraft
Resting From: Nothing
Retired: EQ2, CoH, Tabula Rasa, SWG, Warhammer, AoC
Waiting For: SWTOR, APB
Love(d): Tabula Rasa, SWG, World Of Warcraft, Age of Conan
Mmm, well Global Agenda and SWTOR are going to succeed I think.
I don't know about the other ones.
nom nom nom
Just my guessings, bit sad that many of em prolly will fail.
I think we can safely say all will fail apart from SWTOR and FF14 which all the emos buy
1. Star Crap Online.
2. The Old Crap.
3. Earthcrap.
4. Global Crap.
5. Crap Universe.
6. The Crap.
7. JumpCrap Evolution.
8. Crap514.
9. CrapXIV
I think SW:TOR is the only MMO which really has a shot at becoming a big hit. But who knows, everyone thought either AOC or WAR would become massive but they both faded in comparision with WOW.
Just my guessings, bit sad that many of em prolly will fail.
Will since you don't know what dust514 is your opinion isn't very valuable.

It's only ur opinion ^^
FF14 is going to be the most successful of those games.. hands down.

Currently playing:
FFXIV on Behemoth, FFXI on Eden, and Gloria Victis on NA.
Out of all on the list I'd say SWTOR comes in first, while the others have varying amounts of limited success.
I think the least successful will be Earthrise probably.
Gw2, will be everybody´s second game.
"whut? gw2 on top why? nobody plays it
-no, but everybody bought because its average AAA title for much less"
now: GW2 (11 80s).
Dark Souls 2.
future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.
"Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
What is considered a failure or a success? Failures have been so liberally thrown around in MMO forums that what the heck does a failure mean. Like the closing of the game in a short time? Or low subscription numbers?
I am going to say that " failure" means for my reponce to be based on low subs as compared to the relative amount devs spent on the game.
Star Trek Online (Cryptic Studios) Fail
2. The Old Republic (Bioware,Lucas Arts) fail
3. Earthrise (Masthead Studios) fail
4. Global Agenda (Hi-Rez Studios) fail
5. DC Universe (Sony Online Entertainment) fail
6. The Agency ( Sony Online Entertainment) fail
7. JumpGate Evolution (NetDevil Studios) fail
8. Dust514 (CCP) fail (xbox game right?)
9. FFXIV (Square Enix) success
10. TERA (Bluehole Studios) no idea
Only a handful of games have slowly increased subs without losing a ton of subs first.
I have no doubt that many of my "fails" will have some big box sales but they will in 6 months be losing subs rapidly. (warhammer, aoc).
Only reason I think FFXIV will be ok is because its really a niche game in a sense people who play the older mmo are not really playing everthing else. I don't see them attracting many new players so their number should stay good because of loyal fans.
This is very speculative with the little I know of TOR's features.
GW2 comes out in 2011.
I agree about SWTOR. I'll be very surprised if SWTOR doesn't succeed, meaning it makes a profit. You don't have to reach WoW numbers to be profitable.
Global Agenda is not an MMORPG. Even the Devs dont' call it an MMORPG.
FF14
Second would probly be GW2
Lvl 75 Black Mage/White Mage ffxi
Lvl 80 Druid WoW
Lvl 34 Ranger Aion

If we look at profit numbers I bet there has a been a ton of "failures" that were successful. I would agree that if SWTOR was made like other bioware games it will be fun maybe not in a long term sense. But regardless of its long term appeal it will be most likely profitable on box sales alone.

I don't think that's possible because of the overhead of running a server farm, and customer service, overhead for monthly credit card billing, etc.
There's a lot more costs running an online game than just shipping the single player boxes and you're done. I think they will HAVE to have some player retention to make a profit, but I agree that box sales will go a long way to pay back development costs.
This is an area where Darkfall lost a lot of money. They had a lot of people that would have bought the box on launch, but they didnt' have the server capacity to handle everyone, so they had limited sales. Now, a lot of those people that would have purchased the box on launch will never buy the game. That's lost revenue.
1. Star Trek Online (Cryptic Studios) - Under 100K subs
2. The Old Republic (Bioware,Lucas Arts) - Will do pretty good
3. Earthrise (Masthead Studios) - Under 100K subs
4. Global Agenda (Hi-Rez Studios) - Mixed but think it will do ok
5. DC Universe (Sony Online Entertainment) - got to be way better than CoH to compete
6. The Agency ( Sony Online Entertainment) - Have no idea
7. JumpGate Evolution (NetDevil Studios) - Moderate success
8. Dust514 (CCP) - Should do very good on the console
9. FFXIV (Square Enix) - I say moderate success
10. TERA (Bluehole Studios) - Can be a success
By the way, where the heck in Mortal Online on your list? It's supposed to be what DarkFall should have been, and I'm following that game the most.
Huge success TOR and FF14 that's pretty much it.
As long as any of those games has enough subs to pay the bills and keep more content coming none of them will fail.
For me a game hasn't failed till they close the servers down.

Why are so many people saying FFXIV? FFXI isn't doing and hasn't done that well outside the asian market.
I guess the OP didn't specify which market though. For the western market, I think FFXIV will do only slightly better than FFXI, although I think it will do a lot better in the asian market.
It's the opposite for SWTOR though. It will do well in the western market and not so well in the asian market.
Overall success as in profit, I think I'll stick with SWTOR.
