What MMO do you play? And why?

raystantzraystantz Final Fantasy XI CorrespondentMember UncommonPosts: 1,237

What MMO do you spend your 12.99-14.99 per month on, and out of the droves of MMO's to choose from.. why did you choose the one that you currently play? What makes it better than the other offerings out there?

I'll go first..

Currently I am playing EQ2.

Why? Because I've played WoW for 4 years, and I can't keep up with it. I'm also an indie film maker, and I'm working on a feature length horror film currently that takes up alot of my time. I don't have time to spend raiding 4 times a week. I need to be able to play at a pace thats good for me, and still be able to complete content. EQ2 makes this somewhat easy to do, and also offers player housing that WoW doesn't have, and much better graphics that makes use of my modern pc. I also prefer the lore of EQ over WoW. Always have. I'm still on the lookout for something thats "nothing" like WoW (EQ2 has is WoWish qualities.. and is indeed more like WoW than it is EQ) but EQ2 will do until I do find something.

the only MMO I'm subscribed to is WAR because I can pick it up and get into a scenario instantly, which makes it sort of fun. I barely play it though.

I wish I could find an MMO worth my money, I may give LOTRO another spin, the lack of PvP really irks me.

Currently I'm subbed to A Tale In the Desert.

Why? It's so different. It has no violence whatsoever, it allows for tons of creativity, everything you have you make yourself or trade with other players for, it has lots to do besides just crafting, it has a real politics system that any laws that get voted on get hard coded into the game by the dev himself, as well as elections for Demi-Pharoahs (players) which get 7 player bans each and a few other perks. Also, it's set in Egypt. Personally, I love it.

Other than that, I get the occasional time card for Vendetta off of MMOSite and have a lifetime sub to Knights of Dream City.

Subbed to Fallen Earth and EVE.

Fallen Earth, haven't played in awhile. Great game.

EVE, because it takes NO time to play. I can log in, update my orders and contracts. Log out. I like that, I don't have much time to spend on a game.

I've also been playing DDO, but I'm about to uninstall. The game is not for me. Good game though, I haven't made a single level yet, but I've ran about 3-4 dungeons. Just really not into the DnD thing, didn't think I would like it, but it was a free western game so what the hell.

world of warcraft, because no other game offers so much for my 15 bucks a month.

used to play everquest until sonly finally crossed my own personal line by designing content for eq that could only be gleaned by the game of chance (Lon) trading card game.

Some lead and some follow I prefer to stand beside!

I have played in the past:

UO, EQ, EQ2, WoW, DDO, DAOC, City of Heroes, EVE and Warhammer Online, Aion, and Fallen Earth

    Of those, I hated:

WoW and EVE.  EVE is about as much fun as sitting at work crunching through an Excel spreadsheet, and feels like the same kind of work.  No thanks.  I play games to escape accounting and office management and grief, not revel in it.  WoW was simply too...  I don't know, I never could get into it.  It seemed forced and too easy after "growing up" on EQ and UO.

    Of those, I loved:

DDO, EQ, DAOC, Warhammer Online (see my reasoning... ;) ) - and Fallen Earth.

Still subbed to, still on the fence about:

Aion.  I can't decide if I love, hate, or am indifferent to this game.  I keep playing, though.

Only game I currently play religiously:

Fallen Earth.  Seriously, Fallen Earth is the most enjoyable, most unique and best-run MMORPG out there for my money.  I took the time to update my system drivers and clean out my registry so I don't get the "lag" many people report, and the game runs like butter for me. ;)  The crafting system is pure fun, I can logon for 25 minutes and feel like I am accomplishing something - or I can play for 8 hours and forget where the time went.  Not since the original EQ has a game captivated me like this.

    Looking forward to:

    Star Trek Online.  I can't help it, I'm a diehard trekkie. ;)

I hate to do this, but what does it offer? You can: Raid, or you can Raid, or.... you can Raid..... and well there's always Raiding if that gets boring, then if you need a little break from that you can go run an old world Raid a few times.

I'm currently subbed to WoW and Fallen Earth (they'll get my money at the end of my 14-day trial). I pay $14.99 a month for both of them.

To be honest, I'm pretty bored of WoW. The only reason I still have it subbed is because my boyfriend & best friend still play, so unfortunately its subbed but I find myself logging into it less day by day.

Fallen Earth on the other hand, doesn't usually fit my usual mold for a game, which maybe is the reason I am enjoying it as much as I am. It's a great game for exploring which is my main reason for enjoying it. I love the fact that I can walk out into the middle of nowhere. The crafting is also enjoyable and it feels meaningful.

Playing Darkfall right now.  I needed something different then WOW even though WOW gave me a lot of enjoyment over the years.  I like the skill system, I enjoy PVP, I like what feels to me as a risk in gaming, and I enjoy the ability to just explore.  I miss the fact that the game is lacking in numbers and I miss the social aspect of my long time guild in WOW.  I will continue to explore games as they are released and I will always remember how far gaming has come since the days of Text Adventure of Infocom - Zork.

Right now I'm waiting patiently for the SciFi-esque MMOs to come out. So I'm playing the usual suspects...WoW and CoH/CoV (because I'm still incredibly sentimental about my characters. )

When I actually want to play a MMO I log into Eve Online.

The offline skill system, spaceship pvp, economy and sci-fi lore/theme makes my sci-fi geeky self giggle like a school girl.

    PLaying: EvE, Ryzom

    Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

Well you see, it's not about the raiding.  You can raid, but you see, the game is designed in such a way that it allows you to raid the same dungeon many thousands of times before you get bored of it.  It does this by not giving you the items you need to move to the next raid unless you do it a few thousand times.  This means WoW has 1000x the content for each raid dungeon there is in the game.  A lot more content than any other game out there.

I am playing Warhammer now because  I'm having a good time with the RVR and it's PVE. I know most people don't like WAR PVE but I'm enjoying atm. The game is refreshing after playing WOW for years.

If I get bored with WAR I will try EQ2 again.

You obviously haven't tried many of the games out there.

WoW Raids are good, I give them that. But it's still the same thing over and over and over and over. To get the same thing everyone else has, it's not even like the items are randomly generated stats or anything. It's just rarity of drops. In the same sense, you could say L2 has 100,000,000 times more content than WoW because that's how many mobs you have to kill to make a single level. :-|

By all means, enjoy the hell out of WoW. My wife does everynight, I kinda did for a short bit. It's just the wording you used and the way you tried to explain it that gets me.

     DDO

I can log in & do something for 10 minutes if I want or 2 hours.  In my opinion the game is like a 3d Diablo.  Quests have plenty of variety when you select normal you can wade through hordes of enemies with ease, choose hard and one trap can kill you.  It's easy and more complicated at the same time.  You have to put some thought into your characters otherwise they'll suck later on.

It doesn't have 1000x the content. It has 1000x the gear, MAYBE, and by not giving you that and forcing you to play the SAME content over and over and over, it's simply a time sink for people like you who are going to buy into it rather than complain about not having enough content. That's where they get their money. This is how they keep subscribers. You have fun doing that. I played the game for 6 months. Never capped one character. I knew as soon as I hit the cap, it would only be a catalyst towards me getting bored of WoW.

If you want to play an engaging game, play a sandbox, or at least a semi-sandbox. That's what I do. ATItD ftw! It doesn't get much attention and it's niche, but it has a nice player base and it's got plenty of content, not time sinks.

Other examples are TheHatter's game, Fallen Earth and games like Ryzom.

Currently beta'ing Allods Online and Grand Fantasia, the latter generally only because I'm bored and don't want to get too attached to my Allods character(s) before it gets wiped. Other than that, Torchlight takes up most of my time these days. Wish the MMO version of that would hurry up and arrive.

Oh, and raiding isn't the only thing to do in WoW... you forgot dailies! Doing the same 25 quests over and over again every day for weeks at a time is such stimulating entertainment, I can't even remember why I quit! So much fun you'll vomit blood... in a good way!

Honestly, I kinda like GF. The sprites are pretty interesting. I can't wait to see what they do at higher lvls. +for dragon mount. =D

from the sounds of this thread you'd think there was no pvp in WoW. Like arenas aren't such a huge aspect in the game now.. and like battle grounds don't exist...

Hi, new to this website btw :)

My opinion from playing WoW 5 years and many many mmorpgs, to many to remember xD.

I feel that WoW does give the best PvE experience out there, but for PvP you gotta find another game. Heard some good about Aion PvP but it's still need some fixing up from 25+ lvl's, ( got the collectors edition ). Lvl 21 atm so can't say much about PvP for now. Champions online kinda sucks tbh, good char custimazation but...PvE and PvP it just feels wrong on controls and bad ;s.

Atlantica Online and Aion is the ones I vote for PvP and WoW for PvE ( the new patches are really messing the game up in my opinion but that's just my opinion ).

Luck or Skill, it's still a Kill!
