It requires a big time commitment per play session, which rules out the majority of people most likely. Any game chosen should be playable in 1-3 hour stints, even the large group stuff. I guess if we're going in with a premade guild, all starting from scratch, this may be possible.
Doesn't FFXI pick the server you roll on? If so, we'd all be split up among the different servers.

Yea FFXI might be a tough one to do. It's a great game, one of the best easily, but now isn't a very good time to start it. It takes months, years to accomplish much in this game and with the release of FFXIV in 2010, most people will be moving on to that. FFXI will more than likely not have much left going for it after FFXIV releases so just about the time we get settled in and start seeing people in the mid ranges we'd be left with essentially a dead game. But you can pick servers now so we wouldn't be separated.
I'm just not sure FFXI is all that great of an idea, then again, look how EQ2 turned out compared to EQ1, completely different games. Time will tell, but I have a feeling Square Enix will make FFXIV and updated version of FFXI and have little to no updates for FFXI after the release of XIV.
EQII is in the top runners, but I doubt it will be the first one we try. Although, to be frank, it's not a bad grame Grouping greatly enhances it, since solo in it is kinda same-ish. There are lot of low-level dungeons, that are impossible without a group, but simple are not run anymore, since people outgrew them levels ago. Things like that keep in Antonica, overrun by the undead.
I think our first one will be either FFXI, EvE or Ryzom, maybe VG, since they're the most unconventional. As to your EvE situation... Yeah, I get that rerolling a new character, after spending so much time on the old one is harsh, but our point is to experience the game "fresh". However, since EvE is so unconventional it may turn out not that bad. What do you say, we make a thread+poll about it on our new guildsite, once it opens?
Sounds like a plan on the voting.
Didn't know that much about EQ2, I only played the trial. Good to know there's a lot of stuff worth doing with a group at lower levels though. Fears allayed
I remember a lot of the more "hardcore" solo-players saying, taht there shhould be enough content to do with a group, but be able to solo it at later levels. That's EQII - there are tons of dungeons, starting at about level 14-15 (In Queynos, at least) that are awesome to do in group, but, well, there are no low-level people anymore.
In fact, there are Queynos sewers, as well. Creepy, long and void of players. We could check those out, if we decide to play it.
I'm making a forum on Guildportal, but I don't really know, how to call us... Any suggestions? I'd prefer something more neutral, suiting most playerstyles (and satisfying my roleplaying heart).
I sugges the name be "[something] Explorers" or "[something] Adventurers." The reason why it makes the most sense and appeals to our RPing hearts is that we are brand new players in whatever world we choose, and everything will be an Adventurer and we will be Exploring everything through a new pair of eyes. The [something] part should really signify the game we're playing. For example, using the world name, as in Azeroth Explorers, or a region name: Queynos Adventurers.

Hey there, Im more than up for this idea of your i believe it's a great idea. As far as the games for voting go i hoose the following.
Everquest 2- Simply because i wasn't able to play through the early mmo series at the time when they were at top of the mmo industry and i would like to try it out.
Dungeons and dragons- always enjoyed the series creatures from the board games, always wanted to play the game. Now its F2P i believe its a great opurtunity to try it out. Plus i believe its not a straigh forward slash and kill game, like most mmos.
Anarchy online- My Aoc subscription acount page always prompted me to give this game a go. Ive never been a huge fan of Sci Fi mmos and i would like to try this. Ive heard the combat system is brilliant and the whole "feel" of the game will be a change to the ones i have previously played.
They are my options and i'm looking forward to the final decisions. Keep me updated, cheers.
Whats the big deal with Exploring? WoW added achievements to old zones for hunting down rare elites, Yet people still complained about exploring. Now I hear people talking about exploring CAT, but all CAT is is a revamed Azeroth map. Same Mechanical elements, just with a face lift. SO how does that fix the Adventuring problem in WoW? I read alot of WoW vets wanting to come back to explore, but wouldnt they get bored again?
Some players have a different definition of exploration in these games than you do. My definition also does not involve chasing loot. No one should need to be bribed to play I would think, since that suggests you don't like the mechanic. And I personally do not consider killing mobs ( for rare epics ) exploration. Exploration may involve combat often, but it is a different component of the game world, or at least should be in my view.
As to your comment about "same mechanical elements, just with a face lift," well this is true of the process of leveling as well. So why should it be regarded differently with combat over exploration? WoW does many things well, and deserves its reputation ( good and bad ), but I wouldn't use it as a measure of anything other than ease of use. It nailed that. Notice is wasn't one of the suggested games.

I actually think that's a pretty good idea.
Either way no need to just dismiss it out of hand. Perhaps some suggestions of your own would be more helpful.

I agree. I don't mind people not liking the idea, but some input to help guide the brainstorming session would help. Such as, "I don't like your idea, because..."
That "because..." gives us a root cause of why you don't like the idea, which in turn helps narrow down the type of names you prefer.
I noticed one game that seems to be missing entirely from your list. This is a game Ive personally found to be absolutely amazing from beginning onward.
The Chronicles of Spellborn
+Very customizable characters
+Any character can use any gear, and upgrade the gear to suit them
+Free Form Combat - No Autotargeting, no click and forget gameplay.
+Arena and Freeform based PvP. Arena PvP gets you points which you can apply towards some unique items. You can join a league, or go solo.
+Easy leveling curve, not a real grinder.
+Quests are actually fun, not a bunch of lame "Kill 20 small snails and get a potion of healing"
+Not a traditional fantasy setting. Feels almost steampunk, but not like Neo Steam.
+The game in its current state is 100% Free
-Rotating Combat Bar is tough to get the hang of, this deters most new players who are used to a static skill interface
-Low populations leave people playing solo alot.
-Not alot of endgame content currently (though this is supposed to be in development)
-Servers go offline at random times due to maintenance, poor communication from Acclaim on when this happens
-Acclaim is a publisher. Acclaim sucks. If this game didnt rock I would not play it soley based on this reason.
-The game is being redeveloped as a free to play game with a mall.
-Graphics are gorgeous, but stylized. Either you appreciate the style or you dont. Most asian MMO fans think the characters are ugly.
As for a name, could always call it "Goronians Army" "Goronians Minions" or some such. Afterall, Goronian got this ball rolling. It's fairly neutral and ambiguous to anyone who doesn't know how we started. And as far as reminding us where we came from, it would go all the way back to the very first forum post. Just a thought.
I will be down for this if we play Final Fantasy XI. Its a game where you have to group so I think that it is the perfect game.

A few more comments based on things I have read.
I'm currently playing EQ2... I want to like the game, but when you've played WoW for the last 4 years and your looking for something "completely" different.. player housing and a more advanced crafting system just don't cut the mustard. Theres a good bit of group content to do, but its all obsolete.. just like WoW. The idea is to get to cap as fast as possible and raid. I know, I'm getting pushed to do that right now by the guild I am currently in. They don't want to group for any of the lower level stuff legitimately, they want to run me through everything. Its quite annoying. I know the idea here is to "not" do that.. but it just looms in my brain. If you guys do pick EQ2.. unless you go pvp, Antonia Bayle is the most populated PVE server. PVP in EQ2 is fairly unbalanced, and pretty much always has been. At least its not ruined by battlegrounds though.
EQ would be a great choice, but the graphics are starting to get extremely dated.
EVE would be a good choice, but not everyone likes spaceship games... and from the people I know who play it. They brag more about playing by "not playing" than they do "playing".
FFXI is tough to get into, but with a dedicated group everything becomes MUCH easier to accomplish to the point of being almost easier than the solo quest mmo's.
This is a great idea, but its gonna be tough when people's opinions vary so greatly.

Currently playing:
FFXIV on Behemoth, FFXI on Eden, and Gloria Victis on NA.
I haven't tried Eve Online, Vanguard, or Saga of Ryzom (Ryzom in particular I followed the beta, but just didn't get around to playing it on it's release, if I only get one vote this would be it) so I'd be up for those.
Old games I'd love to revisit to see what's changed would be Final Fantasy XI or EQ II.
Alganon released yesterday and is a small indie game that looks very much and feels very much like wow, even more than runes of magic. Great community though.
Eve would be my least favorite, I have played it a few months this year and it's like a second game I have on my second monitor that I click on once in a while. It starts out very slow, and running missions is very boring, it takes a while, and only requires you to click a few times, and watch your ship fire, and usually you are so powerful t hat you can just sit in one spot and click fire and your done. I never felt it was useful or very necessary to group in missions because they are so easy and mundane, maybe at lvl 4 missions it could be handy. It's not a bad game at all, but it takes a while to get going, and the first month is better spent only training learning skills, or you will lag behind a lot. The game feels very slow paced and I think it would take too long for us to get into, and a lot of people would fall off. And I don't think the game encourage grouping early on, well mining missions is handy to be grouping, and going to 0.0 space to pvp, but that takes months to prepare for.
My experience at least, I could very well be doing it wrong.
I have the same experience with EVE, but that's doing missions alone, it's the most boring thing, but starting as a group and learning to combat between us, for instance, and doing missions together could be a blast. And it's a game to play for years to come.
About the name.. these are anagrams form Adventure, some are funny, like Evader Nut, Evade Turn, Avert Dune, Raven Duet... : Adventure A Ventured Ad Venture Averted Nu Evader Tun Evader Nut Evade Runt Evade Turn Unread Vet Vaunted Re Advent Rue Raved Tune Tundra Eve Daunt Ever Daunt Veer Dart Venue Drat Venue Earn Duvet Near Duvet Tavern Due Raven Duet Nave Trued Vane Trued Avert Dune Avert Nude Aver Tuned Rave Tuned Vaunt Reed Vaunt Deer Tau Nerved Tau Vender Vat Enured Vat Endure
I like the sound of this. Some simple wordplay is not bad.

Add nate1980 to the list I have some points to make: 1. The purpose of this thread is to gather all the players here looking for a change into a pool. So the current population level of a game or where the current community is in the game (population heavy) shouldn't matter, as isn't the point of this to create a guild with what we have here? So far, I see around 30 people, which is more than enough for anything a game can throw at you. Most, except for PUG heavy players, only group and associate with their guild anyways. So population and population balance shouldn't be a factor here. 2. I'd recommend joining a game that doesn't punish group exploration. I'm not delusional, I know that out of the 30 people here, not all will want to group all the time, but one of the things you mentioned was grouping together. So even if we assume 1/4 of the people want to group, you'll need to have a game that allows grouping without penalization. Games that are heavily quest-based are solo oriented, and groups will have a hard time getting together enough to justify forming this guild.
1. It's not a factor, some people just enjoy more populated games and it kinda "ensures", that the game won't close soon enough.
2. Most games on the list don't. In fact, all of the top-five are exploration-heavy, if you play them without a raidraidraidpvp mindset.
And welcome to the team!

You can pick a server nowadays, and the gme IS manageable in 1-3 hour chuncks. You may not level on higher levels in one sitting, but would still be able to achieve something.

I hate WoW because it made my plush hamster kill himself, created twin clones of Hitler, punched Superboy Prime in reality, stared my dog down, spoiled my grandmother, assimilated me into the Borg, then made me into a real boy, just to make me a woman again.

What do you guys say, we use some non-offensive foreign word, as a guild name? For example russian Iskateli (Seekers)?

Foreign to who? lol Theres so many different cultural groups represented here I am sure.. would be hard to decide on whats foreign and whats not.
Foreign to English-speaking people. That, and Iskateli sounds relatively harmless.

Names are names. Really makes no difference to me. If I like the game, we can be called "The Twilight Brigade" for all I care. Of course I'll hate the name, but it won't stop me from playing.

Laudanum - Romance. Revenge. Revolution.
Crappy, petty people breed and raise crappy, petty kids.
Variations:
The Goronian Rebellion
The Goronian Revolt
Goronian League
etc

My vote goes to Istaria, Vanguard then FFXI.
There are two kinds of people in this world. People who pick their nose.. and liars.
I'd love to join up in this, count me in.
I'll edit it down to these 4:
1. Ryzom
2. Eve Online
3. Final Fantasy XI
4. EQ II
I like the sound of this. Some simple wordplay is not bad.
Gorone is a fictional organization in a book I'm trying to write. Goronian is just any member of said organization. And since the games ar enot set in Cascade, I doubt it would be a good idea. Also, I'm not that much of an ego trip.
Thefivemagik,Mannish,Magnum2103, Ramones274, welcome to the team!
I hate WoW because it made my plush hamster kill himself, created twin clones of Hitler, punched Superboy Prime in reality, stared my dog down, spoiled my grandmother, assimilated me into the Borg, then made me into a real boy, just to make me a woman again.
We have kind of an unspoken rule here - no F2P's, except DDO.

What do you guys say, we use some non-offensive foreign word, as a guild name? For example russian Iskateli (Seekers)?

Foreign to English-speaking people. That, and Iskateli sounds relatively harmless.

Names are names. Really makes no difference to me. If I like the game, we can be called "The Twilight Brigade" for all I care. Of course I'll hate the name, but it won't stop me from playing.
