new player - picking race

glofishglofish Member UncommonPosts: 346

I bought the game yesterday and I can't help but be thoroughly impressed by the attention to detail in the world. I am not sure whether the game play is my cup of tea, will see in time. Either way  I salute this small indie company for producing a game that feels very different from anything that is out there.

I'd like to pick Mahirim as my race, yet I am worried a bit that there will be more racial enemies, plus it seems their hitboxes are larger. Is this a disadvantage later on?

How a races handled in clans and the world in general?

Go Mahirim, they are a lot of fun. The Hit Box argument is used as an excuse by bad players to be bad.

Mahirim= Longer Attack Reach, but also larger hitbox.

Currently a good chunk of the clans does not limit races who can join though there are a few exceptions. As far as "how races are handled in world?" well, everyone in DarkFall is a PKer it would seem. I've encountered a few players during my trips and we just said "hello" to each others but these are race encounters. Usually you just find 1 or 2 rogues who will try to PK you.

Also, you won't be able to access servers tomorrow because of the expansion update so you might want to either wait for the expansion or try to gain as many ranks as possible.

This doesn't really follow your question but....

Being new to darkfall can be extremely challenging.  I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest you check out and probably join the clan "NEW".

It is for new players specificly, you are in it for 30 days and then you are asked to leave.

They have a clan city with all the proper facilities/trainers.  They give a "goody bag" when you join and make it to the city as well as help you out with other equipment if needed.

Most importantly though <In my opinion> it opens you up to a bunch of players who can answer ANY question you may have and even more imprtantly, group with you and go and kill things!

This game can be pretty intense at times when you die and lose a lot of good items, if not all your stuff, it can be a bit aggrivating.  If you can get past that though, you should be good.

    this is their website..

You can also look members up in game, or if you can figure out the clan menue, search for them there.

NEW is an all race clan.  They are also only on the North American server.

My character name is Ebon Night, in game.  I am an alfar, if you have any questions, send me a message in game, or even here on mmorpg.com.

    Hope you enjoy it!

What kind of player are you and what games did you play in the past/enjoy? I've only started a few days ago but personally feel Mahirim is one of the tougher choices (depending on what kind of player you are), it seems to attract the gung-ho gank'fest kiddy/teen types. The first time i tried DF a few months ago i didnt play for long at all, but got ganked within the first 10 minutes of being a Mahirim. Granted Alfar are the race which attract these the most. Orks/Mahirim are said to be the middle ground to this kind of playstyle.

Wheras this time i picked Mirdain and have met a few pretty decent people who i've grouped with and had chats with. One guy I even added on Xfire to group up in the future. I could be wrong, like I say I'm new to the game, but its the impression I got and is from comments I read. Mahirim seem a race which are more aimed at those who are pretty well trained in Free-PvP ways. Also the Mirdain starting village is extremely nice to look at.

Are you on EU or NA?

Pretty great seeing so many new people coming into the game! I am new as well, been playing a bit past two days (been busy to play as much as I want and have been playing Aion and Darkfall at same time, neat to see just how different a MMO can be, which is saying something since I have not felt anything new in a loooong time).

Anyways I went Mahrim but also tried some other races for fun. I do notice that the Mahrim is the most difficult when killing goblins and BY FAR the Human I made was the easiest (tested orc as well who was in middle). I really do not know why but I killed faster, missed less and took less damage.

Game is cool so far and I am eager to see what happens tomorrow with the xpack! I plan to write a detailed and honest report after a week of playing to give my newbie view point.

Oh and this is wierd but I have not been ganked once...I have seen some "high level" people zoom past on mounts, seen people out gathering and even met another new player who was really nice and helped me clear goblins and also get back my tombstone. No ganking yet....keep waiting for it to happen :P

But were Mahirimi that ganked you? That would be more relevant.

Yes that was one of my alternative picks as well. I rolled one too for a few hours and played a bit as Mirdain. That starter city is very-very impressive. So many tidy features! I

I am on NA, rolled a Mahirim in the end - I just want to be a big wolf.

With regards to the NEW clan

I started playing 3 days ago, having played beta for all of about a week before a host of personal circumstances forced me to give up gaming for some time I had some idea of the basics, very little really though and a lot had changed. Anyway, I joined NEW on my second day of play and left on the same day, I found it overall to be more trouble than it was worth, I got camped for a while at bind by guys who were at war with NEW, and other than answers to 1 or 2 of my questions, no good came from my time there, so I decided to go it alone.

Its not as hard as people would have you believe, I'm having fun and doing well enough for myself. Perhaps my experience with the clan was that of the minority, and I support the idea, but of course you can't expect people not to take the opportunity to grief a clan consisting of entirely noobs in a game such as this. Not that I mind a few hours of bind camping, gives you time to read forums or attend to real life matters, but it just made my life easier to be able to enter towns other than hammerdale.

Hmm I thought NEW clan kept itself out of affairs and other clans knew it was there to help newbies....Would have assumed other clans been cool to NEW clan members seeing as getting new players, retaining new players and having more positive word of mouth, is all very good for Darkfall. Shame if the norm for them to not help much and other clans see it as open sport on NEW clan members.

I may still give it a go though as it can be lonely out in the massive world with no one to talk to or do stuff with.

Glofish (or anyone really) if you want another new scrub to kick it with look me up! Though game coming down tomorrow for who knows how long for new MEGA expansion, which has me super excited!
