Anyone remember PSO?

RakaraiRakarai Member UncommonPosts: 114

I know, I know long dead topic, for a long dead game. I just can't help thinking back to it since it was my first, and you always remember your first. The game was broken, I'll be honest many things were wrong with it from hacking, to lag. However everyone played together regardless of language or country.

Sure the game was repetitive, but it was fun for its time and I feel it was innovative, it was a big name game from Sega on the best console ever created the Dreamcast. I feel I owe a lot to that game, because while not everyone in the community was good, there were the amazing gems like any game.   The music, the environment were golden, I remember the holidays this amazing music played that I found to be the perfect music to just chat, and sit and listen to...I didn't even care to play it was so rocking.

A gear and skill based game with things like challenge mode existing, pvp was fun for its generation. I don't know I just can't forget my roots and I wonder if any of the rest of the community remember it fondly or not so fondly? Whats your opinion?

Yeah there is a small but dedicated group that still play PSO. If you search around you should find a few places still running PSO I, II and Blue Burst. It's good that people have the options to continue playing these games with other people. The good news with these private servers is since there is no official service running anymore, there are no conflicts over revenue being lost like with private server versions of other MMO's.

I guess if you every miss it too much, you can always log in a play to satisfy that craving until another MMO comes along that grabs you like PSO did. If it never happens, well at least you have these servers as long as people keep them up.

They do have a MMO called Phantasy Star Universe. Like a sequel or something I guess.

Pretty decent. A lot like PSO.

I know I tried playing it a long time ago, and I credit them for giving me a look back on my past. The servers are handled nicely for having very little manpower to maintain them and keep them semi stable. Its fun, and the community has active events for holidays among other things, and they are always making some sort of new content, so they are in a way like actual developers at this point.

For me the game ended years ago, I just couldn't get back into it and stay, thats not to say the game isn't good. Its still beautiful and fun, its just very low pop, and its hard to replace the initial feeling that I so fondly remember. I'm just glad the private server exists, so that if I ever get a crave to try again, its always there, and sometimes its worth just sitting and playing for how fun and mindless the game play is.

Oh I found wow shortly after pso closing its servers on dreamcast and such, and stuck with that for a few years. I'm not a vet who is looking to play nothing but pso, or harp on it. I just like reminiscing  about it, since most people now don't even know it exists, or remember it at all.

Hell maybe we could even get some of the community to play it for a bit? I dunno, I think it'd be fun to do.

Man!  I played that game almost every night for about six months and then off an on quite a bit after that.  It was very addictive and fun.  Though not a true MMO, it was my first foray into the world of online gaming.  You're right, there were alot of things wrong with that game that I probably wouldn't tolerate today, but I still have a lot of good memories too.

When PSO came out I remember thinking "So it's Diablo 2....with simpler combat....at 1/3rd speed."

I was a bit disappointed, considering the hype.

I honestly tried to give PSU a fair chance, but the community was terrible, it felt like the maturity level from what I remember pso having went dramatically down and its now about cyber sex. I remember logging in and seeing it spammed every cyber plx...ugh..I just couldn't deal with it.

I also didn't really care for being able to switch classes on the fly, i didn't like that diversity. I also was the ranger class in pso, and spending ap to fire something when you wanted to be a gunner, was pretty gimped without speccing into other things too. Though the housing system, ship and graphics were beautiful, as was the music. I just wished the gameplay was at least more of the same, but thats just me nittpicking. Its an okay game, and theres some things to really like about it, espescially the content and events they try to provide to the players.  I just wish they didn't gimp rangers, then I would play the crap out of that game even if the community wasn't that good, only takes a few good people to make the game worth it...if they still exist.

Well they came out almost side by side, Diablo 2 came out in June 2000, and Pso came out in November 2000. So my question is how you could pull yourself away from diablo that quckly? :3 That aside, yeah it was simpler and I don't remember any of the hype I was still a young kid then. I just remember that the bosses were epic, and the music flowed well with each event.

It wasn't the game for everyone, but there weren't very many games out there, and there was no console mmo  up until this point, so I give them a lot of credit for pulling it off as well as they did.

PSO is still alive guys. SCHTHACK runs a private server for all versions on all systems. It's been there for years and I'm pretty sure Sega knows it exists and doesn't stop them because they still have PSU.

At any rate, yeah, I loved the game and still play occasionally. Tried getting my girlfriend into it but she played Force and was stripped of all cash most days from buying mana regens.

DreamCast PSOv2 Challengue mode will always have a place in my heart. DC V1 was my first online game ever, and thus one I will always remember with fondness.

  • RakaraiRakarai Member UncommonPosts: 114

I never tried the xbox version and I never went online with the gamecube. Though yeah the fond memories will always be there, and even the single player game was amazing. I still remember red ring rico in episode 1, and seeing the ring drop at the end was like an oh shit moment the first time I beat story mode. Hell even the gardens before Fallz was amazing and incredibly peaceful, well until you summoned the boss at the monument my god..

Yeah challenge mode was amazing, and its why I didn't care for gc or the others as much they changed the challenge mode rewards from get any item in the game, to get from whichever item we choose for you. Of course everyone chose the spread needle in the dreamcast, so maybe it was better.

Yeah I know the private server, I played on it for awhile, but its still pretty low pop from what I remember. Though if any of you are interested I'd be more then happy to get back into it :3

Just glad to see that I'm not the only one that remembers this underated game

Shit I remember playing that god damn game all day on my Dreamcast.

Man that was such a long time ago.

My oldest Daughter was just a newborn when PSO came out and I would rock her to sleep while playing PSO in my living room.

    Good memories.

    PLaying: EvE, Ryzom

    Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

That was a long time ago dude.

    Humar most of the time.

    Messed with Racast also.

Me and my brother would hook up and play a lot.

    My Humar was maxed out.

Hell no, no way. DCv2 FOmarl + S-Rank mechguns = complete badassery. Those things were SERIOUSLY overpowered.

Maybe I don't understand the question, but I didn't pull myself away from D2 that quickly (or if you're talking about D1, I never even really got into that game due to the extensive cheating in multiplayer.)  I didn't pull myself away from D2 at all.  My roommate at the time (the main source of my impression of PSO being "hyped") was who I watched play it, and tried it for a bit.  Didn't like it so I continued enjoying the games I did like (which I think were D2, AOE2, and Marvel vs. Capcom at that time; probably a FPS in there somewhere too.)

While me and some friends deeply enjoyed playing PSO, we all were in agreement about something really BAD it had: watching someone else play it was SO boring, to the point of sometimes falling asleep. Not exaggerating. Literally asleep on a couch, watching someone else playing it.

Loved PSO on my Dreamcast.  Yeah, it was in the Diablo mold, but so much cooler, since it wasn't point and click  with a lame isometric ancient engine.  The huge bosses really made it and the PS series is one of my favorites back from the 16-it days.  It was really fun for its time, until all the hacking and duping ruined it=(

That game kind of got me into online gaming really.
