Is this game fun yet?

LobenLoben Member CommonPosts: 206

It almost was the last time I played. I think this was about 3 yrs ago. I'm hoping recent and past "expansions" have made the game a lot better.

Unfortunately, it seemed like pvp rarely occurred and when it did, it was mostly in the form of staring at a gates for hours...and hours. Extremely boring. Also I hated the cash grind when you weren't looking at gates. AND I really hated the way the Tier 2 blueprint lottery worked. Either join some megacorp with a 15 yr old tyrant corp leader screaming at people in vent, or have a 0.00000000001% chance of getting a T2 blueprint.....the next time they even gave them.

I liked the idea of the game and a lot of things in the game, but the pvp was usually either ganking or blob warfare, and took forever to actually happen. The things to do apart from pvp.... i.e. making money.....was also on the boring side. Granted most of what I did was grind missions to make money. I had no real blueprints and I was too lazy to search for an unsaturated "niche" T1 market somewhere in BFE. I never really got into mining, but I considered trying it after seeing the same mission story uncountably many times.

I've heard some people say a big part of the appeal is the politicing or metagaming. To be honest, I hate politics in real life. So politics in a video game are even worse and a lot nerdier (and possibly angrier). I understand CCP allowing the metagaming to take place. However, it's hard for me to enjoy doing something that I know will cause someone else grief.

This isn't meant as a troll. I just have mixed feelings about the game. I think it's almost good.....but before I would always  just get bored and end up reading forums and messing with ship setups more than actually playing.

So hypothetically, if I were to resub, would I find that some of these things have changed and there are new ways to entertain yourself? Or fundamentally, are the things you do on a regular basis, for the most part, the same?

The mechanics that you express a lack of interest in are the core mechanics of the game, the mechanics that continue to help the game grow and expand. What you are asking for is a completely new game. The people who have always thought it was fun will say it always has been and still is, and the same goes for the opposite crowd.

I, for one, don't find the game appealing. That being said, I recognize that if Eve turned into a game that I enjoyed, it would certainly not be Eve anymore. I respect CCP and hope they continue to do what they are doing.

Real life brings repetition and pointlessness too. The only thing real life offers is Great graphics. Its kinda expensive too and way to dependent on the cash shop. Totally pay to win as well. No thank you. Ill stick to my games.

I hardly think the game has or will change it's core mechanics and style with a patch, so if you didn't like anything about the game before (which from your post it sounds like it was the case) then you probably still won't enjoy the game.

If you found combat missions and politics boring, mining is the most boring and tedious aspect of the game.  That being said, it was my personal favorite part, but I may be a special case since I love all things mining/ore related.

From what you are saying, EvE is not for you. Not flaming or putting you down; you just dont seem like the kind of person who will ever enjoy it.

"Fun" is a subjective term. Do you have fun playing Sim City? If not, then why bother playing it? Other people will, and that's what your problem with EVE is - other people seem to be getting it and you think your missing out. Nope, if you couldn't scrounge the patience and initiative it takes to play a game like that, you probably won't have "fun" in it now either.

Otherwise, join a corp this time and have people give you an idea what to do this time, because this game can be soloed - but it's boring.

It seems that you dont like the game, nor ever will.

To be honest it reads like a poor attempt at trolling...

Saying this is like when someone says, "I don't mean to be a dick...", you know they're about to be just that. Well, congratulations, you came off like a troll. On the off chance that you aren't simply trolling... The core game mechanics of EVE Online that you hated three years ago are essentially still there. If you weren't happy with that type of gameplay then, you still won't. Although one thing I will say, there is no more high tech BP lottery system. Other than that, well, you might as well not bother.

I've been playing EvE for only 3 months, not as my main MMO, just something to dip into every now and again. I'm not a member of any Corps, just bimble about mining and missioning.

I'm currently running lvl 3 missions in a Battlecruiser and looking forward to kitting it out with full T2 'stuff', after this Sunday the only thing I'll be missing is T2 railguns, but the skills needed will take almost 3 weeks, so it'll be 2010 before I fire T2 ammo in anger. I live with the waiting game.

I enjoy the mining up to a point, though it's a bit of a drag at times. Battles likewise can sometimes be overlong affairs with wave after wave of enemies, and sometimes I find myself wishing they'd just stop coming, mainly because the more of them I kill, the more of them will be there for salvaging, another timesink.

So, from my point of view EvE isn't really all that much fun, but at times it can be fascinating.

The one thing I'd like to see changed in EvE is the combat, in a mnor way. You see, in combat all you seem to be fighting is small red crosses, and the occassional big red cross. I'd like to see an option to 'shrink' space when in battles, down to where a kilometre becomes 10 metres, keeping the real distances ofc for range etc behind the scenes, just visually bringing all those enemy ships into plain view, up close, in yer face, see that battleship you're fighting in all its' glory. Not just a big flashing red cross.

    Now there's an idea.

Perhaps probe drones could give you a live feed that is in a window that allows you to see the enemy up close from a static cam angle or the drone's orbit as you view your own ship. That would be tits.

That zips the cam to the drone - away from the ship you're in. Picture a drone that feeds an image of the ship in a separate window so you can view your attacks on it without zooming away from your own. I figure a new drone type would be useless as you want as many attack ones as possible, so perhaps drone modules are in order.

Ah, I see. Would probably be nice for mission runners and miners but irrelevant fluff for everyone else.

Well, since mission running, mining, politics, metagaming, gatecamping and so on are the core elements of the game, it's unlikely that this would change any time soon.

Maybe if you provided us with a few ideas what would make EvE interesting for you, we could figure out whether this has happened or will happen or is out of the question.

If you're looking for instanced, arena-style PvP, then no. I doubt EvE will ever get to that. That's simply not what EvE is about.

One positive aspect, though: The Blueprint lottery is gone and has been replaced with research, which anyone could do, no matter if you're in a huge alliance or a solo entrepreneur. Buy the research tools, find a free research slot in a station (ok, that might be harder if you're not in an alliance, the public ones are usually permanently taken, or so I heard... never relied on public research slots) and after some time a shiny new T2 BPC is yours. BPOs have been phased out (allegedly some still exist... rumors, rumors... ;), so you should be on par with anyone who produces T2 stuff, provided your skills fit. Could be hard to find the T2 minerals needed without a corp, but that's your problem.

BTW, there is definitly a market for T1 stuff. First, it's HEAPS cheaper to use (many PvP corps rely on T1 crap to fight, simply to minimize their cost), wasting T2 ammo on missions is something few people do (hell, even I don't) and you usually need the basic T1 item to craft a T2 item out of it, and quite a few builders who specialize in T2 stuff don't want to mess with building that petty crap. So enjoy!
