Not this again....who cares if it's a paid beta or not? The real answer is this:
This game is a paid beta only if the person who purchased it had the intentions of paying to play the beta.
That's it. So, for some it's a paid beta (they wanted an early glimpse of playing the game). For others (thought of beta as a perk, but bought it out of loyalty to the direction of the game) is not paid beta. Then the extreme (didn't care about beta, but wanted to buy this game) is also not a paid beta. It depends on the persons real intent (deep down inside). Let me say that with all that being said, I will admit that I paid early (earlier than release) mostly for the beta opporunity. That's just ME...why go around telling everyone else that they paid for beta? They know deep down whether they did or not and that's all that matters. k?
Again though, would they have a beta at ALL if it was not for the full priced pre-orders? That is a PAID BETA. By definition.
I think it's rather poor business practice and verging unethical, but that's just ME. The fact it's a paid beta isn't really up for debate -- it's not about the intention of the user who bought the game, it's about how they would have a beta if it were NOT for the full priced preorders.
Everyone that pre order gets into the beta. It was the same for Warhammer. As simple as that ...beta is included in the price. But Hercules likes to create a hen out of a feather. Twisting the truth ... over and over again.

Again -- Warhammer you could get into 'beta' through means WITHOUT the preorder.
How can you do that in MO? How could SV have afforded their beta without the FULL PRICE preorders? WAR's preorder price was $5, so it's a huge difference between the cost of MO's preorder which is two weeks of groceries, versus WAR's which is basically a sandwich.
wtf? Can new topics not be introduced into the MO forums?

Why does everything turn into an argument. People have to "be right" and can't just live with others thinking what they want to think.
Anyway,
MO,
bugged,
pretty much an empty landscape,
lag issues at times,
most "core features" not fully implemented.
Saying that i still gave them my money and hope to the heavens that this game pulls through. Darkfaller's arguing bout DFO being better despite a year out. Mo'ers arguing we're still in beta (i have to agree it is beta, but still considering release date, would have liked to see it a little further along)
Big patch on Thursday! Fingers crossed it delivers, i heard tales that it is gonna change the game quite abit - which i welcome. Just can't wait for these patch notes.
Oh btw, yes i am in beta atm, not just repeating common problems from forums.

Am I the only one that sees empty landscape as a plus?
Its a sandbox for gods sakes. That means plenty of room for player made cities and castles after release.
SB was nothing but open land after they would wipe a server, but give it 2 days and it was full of castles and areas that weren't worth going near if you valued your inventory.

how do you know they couldnt have a beta test with out the preorders? seems to me maybe mythic should have charged more than $5 to get in if people were willing to pay $50 plus for mortal online.
I am in the same boat, checking the patch notes and forums once or twice a week. The reviews of the game have seemed very polarized, so I have been taking them all with a grain of salt. Watching the bug fixes and inclusion of content has kept me optimistic at least. I have basically empty pockets being a recent college grad so I haven't bought the game... if you ever toss coins in fountains then most likely i've spent your wishes on my utility bills.. . but if i wasn't so strapped for cash i'd buy the game (beta, whatever) so it would have a better chance of staying afloat in the stormy waters it's going to be launched in.
Maybe my optimism is wishful thinking, but I haven't played and its hard to discern reality from all of the comments i've read. Hopefully this next patch is as big and positive as the devs have alluded to.

Just wait for open beta. You'll quickly see who was right, and who was wrong.
Unless they introduce a miracle patch, with miracle testing, with miracle stability -- but you know, I'm kind of a realist so I don't think that's happening.

I think the game has a lot of potential, but they need to give it many more months of development time before they even think about releasing. The features that are already in the game are far too buggy and unpolished and the new player experience is horrible... It is extremely difficult to get into the game because you are dropped in the middle of nowhere with absolutely no direction, no items, and no idea wtf you are supposed to do...
I really hope that isn't the new player experience they intend to provide.
Again -- Warhammer you could get into 'beta' through means WITHOUT the preorder.

Man, I really, really need to know where you do your groceries...
And 5$ is an overpriced sandwich
Though yeah... it's expensive for a "pre-order" but it's more a buying obligation of a product you'll receive at a later date.

The new player will have it difficult in MO. I don't see it getting a lot better. I would hope they would at least give you a back story based on your race and begining area. There will be mo traditional quests, si you are out of luck there as a noob. There will be collection tasks from NPC's though. That can at least get you going on harvesting to begin working on stats. You will have 20 hours with a noob flag so you can't get killed or attacked by players. That may help a bit.
They are going for a sandbox game. The only task you have as a player is to pregress your skills and survive in the world they give you. Along with the choices you have as to what kind of character you want to develope with primary skills. It will just be a world to use to devlope, not much handholding or quests to aid you.

--With regard to preorders
My philosophy after DnL is never to pay for a MMORPG that you either:
Have not tried for free.
OR
Has not been released for 6 months (gets past the initial hype period).
Either of those requirements can usually prevent you from making a mistake and even though I dream MO can be the MMORPG I am looking for, I hold on to that philosophy here. I will wait until they let me try it for free or their product is released and people still say "good things" about it.
good things = good things to me.

well i am following the discussions about this mmo development passively and sometimes i'll look for some info actively.
it's just that i am tired about the whole grind or pay models i faced in very milked common asian -or whatever- grinders. i gave those up all together and a sandbox based concept holds a lot of potential to just play your own game while you are still able to interact with others in a virtual way, it's a concept which might take a turn for the worst because it would depend even more on the community but at least it's something different and worth a try.
what i do read has all the makings of a game which is not suited for everyone because sandbox games never are. they require a certain level of imagination from players instead of a "beating the game and whatever the developers throw at us" mentality. i can imagine that at least part of the complaints come from that kind of players.
on the other hand i hope it's also a result of a step-by-step beta approach which the developers follow, which would lead to a distorted image about the whole of the game unless you are a developer yourself, though i have some doubts about that because the ones who are testing have already payed -another one of those turns for the worse in the whole industry- .
it would make the whole effort the developers are making quite remarkable because it would mean that they do not have a modern "we'll patch it up later" mentality but actually care more about presenting a good endproduct and long term profit rather than going for a rework of the whole product later and have a fast profit now attitude.
when i read "this game needs x amount of months or years more of development" comment then i can only say: i have seen it happen too many times because it is really a trend amongst gaming companies to release their product too soon. i have even seen developers kill their own game with this 'profit now' mentality because gamers are quite polar and if it's not good enough on 'release' then there is always that other game to try out.
other than that "beta" is a concept which the majority of players does not seem to grasp when they are able to play in one so i can only hope that this is one of those times were the testers are really doing objective tests and looking at the bigger picture. unfortunately i am in no position to join them for the moment out of financial and social reasons but if the release looks promising then i'll jump on board nevertheless.

On topic.
I do check up on the game from time to time to see how it is coming along.
While what I have heard from people in beta is not promising at all, I will continue to hope it turns out well and check on its progress.
If it releases and gets to a playable state then i might give it a go. ATM sounds like another dark and light to me. But I am hoping for the best.
