Just Got Banned

I just got banned by Blizzard today when I haven't played in months.  Here's the email:

***Notice of Account Closure***

Account Name: CHRISROBHAY2

Reason for Closure: Terms of Use Violation -- Exploitative Activity: Abuse of the Economy

This account was closed because one or more characters were identified exchanging, or contributing to the exchange of, in-game property (items or gold) for "real-world" currency. This exchange process negatively impacts the World of Warcraft game environment by detracting from the value of the in-game economy.

Even if this behavior is the result of a third party accessing the account instead of the registered user (for example, a friend, family member, or leveling service) then the account can still be held responsible for the penalty because of the impact it had on the game environment.

We've found the above behavior is many times directly related to groups responsible for compromising World of Warcraft accounts; we take these issues very seriously. To better understand our position against exploitative activity and the risks involved, please review this article: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/basics/antigold.html

The exploitative activity that took place on this account violates the World of Warcraft Terms of Use. We ask you take a moment to review these terms at http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/legal/termsofuse.html. Any recurring subscriptions on this account have been suspended to prevent further monetary charges.

For any disputes of this action, please visit the Exploitative Activity FAQ and Contact page here: http://us.blizzard.com/support/article/exploitfaq

Blizzard Entertainment

It is not the first time I heard of inactive accounts being stolen for this purpose, may well be your case...

  • chrisrobhay2chrisrobhay2 Member Posts: 114

I never gave my password to anyone at all besides my brother, but he is 9 and only played WoW for a little bit before he decided he hated it.  And plus, he uses my PC so I knew when he was playing.  The only other explanations would be that my account was hacked or Blizzard messed up really badly.

Email's like this are common f, I recieve one every couple weeks and I havent played in months either. 100% of the time its a phishing email. If you hover your mouse over the links they provide most likly it leads to a totally different site or a site that looks similar to blizz's. If your that worried then go directly to warcraft's website not through some silly email link and talk to support.

...though i doubt it i havent played in about 6-7 months never once had an issue from what i garnered the only time stuff like that occurs is if

    1. you have in fact bought gold sold gold or both

    2. you have went to a site that stole your info but usually that involves input from the user

    3. someone randomly found your info and used it but this is so improbable that 1 and 2 seem more likely

oops i feel like a dumbass i forgot that phishing scam that was floating around

    4.phishing scam sounds plausible

    Your Account been Hacked.

This is the same thing that happen to me the first time I got hacked. Just like the OP, accept, I didnt even get a Email, and my account had no Payment, since I also had quit for 9 months.

Some how the Hacker got into my Email I realized, even tho I wasnt playing WoW.

What I would suggest first, is to Change your Email Password before anything. Then Change your in game Password.

Cause resently My account got rehacked, and after getting the password changed, it quickly got rehacked, and I had notice that the Blizzard Email I got had already been open.

     BTW

what Email service do you use?

  • coffeecoffee Member Posts: 2,007

I notice the OPs mmorpg forum name is the same as his WoW login name.. that ain't too smart is it?  and people wonder how they get hacked.. shocking =D

My first WoW account was suspended when I had an inactive account.  I never recieved an email from blizzard, I could only assume it was because the account was hacked and the email address changed.  They claimed that during the time my account was inactive (by myself anyway) that it was using illegal third party software.

    go figure..

Told you, somebody most likely took your Email address, without you knowing.

Remember between the time you left, and now, Blizzard updated their log in, by doing that Battle Net thing.

That is pretty moronic. I have used the same username for all my gaming accounts and nearly all forum accounts for a decade and never got hacked. It is called not being stupid and falling for phishing emails, giving out your info. Shocking people are not bright enough to know usernames being known is not a security risk, considering how easy they are to figure out/random generate

Same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago like this- I had 2 accounts started in 2006.  I got an email advising me one account was banned  and it gave me a link to click through to argue my case why it should not be.  Only I had to enter one of my account names and password on that link to get in.  It may be a fraudulant action and not really Blizzard doing this.   The tip off to me was that only an account was the target.  I never gave the info to anyone so that is not an option.  If anything leaked,  it was the admin that leaked it. :(

It is hard to imagine Blizzard coming after those of us who have not opened our accounts since 2007 like they don't want us back.   More like someone trying to steal anything left in the account?  Can you think of a valid way we can check on this matter?

NOO,,Just like the Blue said in the other Thread,,,,,, You dont have to get FAKE EMAILS TO GET HACK

I never go any emails from Blizzard (Fake OR REAL) yet like the OP, I still got hacked after I had quit the game.

knowing a forum username and it being the same as your game login can get some one to click on a phishing email, if said email has your ingame login on it many will think its real and click away.  Some forums will also list the persons real name, DOB & email if they don't set it to private.. thats a lot of information to a hacker to....

    a. send a convicing phishing email

    b. try to take ownership of a in-active account by ticketing blizzard

I cannot believe you think using the same username on all your forum and game accounts is secure.. I await your "i was hacked, but I was not my fault" future post.

And thanks for telling us what your potential usernames are.. good info. Oh whats you password?

Go to the official WoW website (not via the email link ofc) and try and login.. the only real way to tell.

Also remember these email could be real, your details could of been keylogged or whatever a long time ago, the hackers could of been waiting for it to be inactive for a time, or only just got around to using it, or blizzard only just detected it or only just banned it after monitoring it for a time.

There are atleast 100,000,000 wow accounts (active and inactive and assuming a 10% retention rate) out there phishing scams are big and will hit home more so than if a hacker tried a scam EQ2 for example with what maybe 5,000,000 eq2 account (active & inactive)

I hope your troubles are sorted out by now. Because these last days I had a blast in playing.

Say when everything is back in order ... and play with that key next time please (or download the cell phone application).

Yeah I got everything down. I figiured out what that F*&*er did. Just not sure how yet, since I never got WoW emails while I was away.

Hey whats that Dungon that we fly on the Dragon Mounts called?

I just got my DK back, and had to run that place using a grey head part, a Green Cloth chest part, a green boots, and a Grey 2hander sword I got off a drop. Did pretty well. Not sure how I was getting 1k crits off that thing with gear like that LOL

But how would a hacker no my password?  Just because I used the same account name doesn't mean anyone can hack my account.

Do you have any of your account info in in an email in your gmail account?

if so it could be that you gmail account got hacked. key logger virus or something of that nature.  always use your email on a computer with updated hot fixes and an update virus scan.  don't trust a public computer.  If you check it at work make sure that they  are updating their computers.

I hope it's just a fake email other wise sorry dude!

I can feel your anger. This game is defenseless. Take your weapon. Strike this game down with all of your hatred, and your journey towards towards the Dark Side will be complete.
