Potential game breaking feature- cash shop items for zone chat

MargulisMargulis Member CommonPosts: 1,614

So some Russian players were posting on the US allods forums that the Russian version, which is already in OB, requires you to purchase cash shop items to talk in zone chat.  They mentioned their frustrations and that posts were being locked or deleted over there, and I have since not been able to find the threads on the us forums either, suggesting the same thing might be happening here.  In CB there is a window where you can view various quantities of items you posses, like talent points, etc, and I noticed that there were indeed 2 different items that were for chatting.  I believe one was for normal zone chat and another for a yell or something, although I may be wrong on their exact function.  However, as much as I've been impressed with this f2p mmo, if they require me to pay to be able to talk in chat, there is no way I will ever play this game.  Being able to chat consistently helps people find parties, interact, give advice and ask questions, and just contributes to a sense of community as a whole.

It's normal for free 2 play to have items to talk in a special chat channel were everyone online can see and also prevents gold spammers from spamming whole chat.

You can always join a guild and/or whisper those people that use the special chat channel for grouping.

Most of the zone chat in CB2 was pointless and resembled spam more than anything else. I have no problem with zone chat being limited to a purchased item... If you want kiddy spam fest and epeen fights I suggest WOW crossroads.

Yep, they have to make their money somehow. This is one of those things people will spend their money on.

Oh, they could maybe  - I don't know - perhaps - make a game that is good enough for people to pay to play it without having each and every feature paid a la carte? Nah!

Pay for postage next? Pay for fast travel? Buy your levels?

I've tried about 10 f2p mmos and I can only remember 1 of those having a pay to chat feature, or cash shop item, and that was indeed for a special chat channel, so i wouldn't say most of them do it.  Maybe I just haven't played the ones that do.  BUT, the fuss in this regard is due to the fact that it is required just for normal world and zone chat, not just for a special channel or something.

I am lucky enough to be in the CBT, and I brought this issue up with some people ingame when I was playing a while ago.  The general consensus was that the cash shop item that is the subject of this thread is for a SPECIAL zone chat; something to differentiate it from the rest of zone chat, and that the rest of zone chat will remain intact.  I hope this is the case, otherwise it is going to be an absolute PAIN to get groups.

Since when is Tuesday a direction?

If that's the case then not a big deal really, I hope that's the way it will be.

haha yeah thats what i was thinking, i thought it was going to end up being a way of chatting in between the two factions allow the leage to talk to the empire and vice versa.

From what I understand, the items in the Cash Shop are for a World Chat, faction specific of course. Basically, instead of being limited to your zone or city only, you'll be seen by anyone in your faction regardless of where they are. Useful but not something I'd personally pay for. haha

    maplestory, anyone?

I honestly don't understand why people play F2P MMO nowaday, because it's more than obvious that ALL of them will turn into a pile of crap.

Please if anyone could name a successful F2P that doesn't involve game-breaking cash shop, please.

So what ur saying is this is a new feature? Cuz I had no issue not talking in the zone chat. And it is only considered spam if  one person is saying the same thing over and over. Which was not the case. Trust me on WoW one guy tryed to report every one for talking on trade due to the fact there were multiple ppl making lists of things with the name murloc in it. It was ruled by an admin as non spam. I only saw a conversasion not spam. But ya that kinda sux if they are doing a cash shop zone chat item. It won't stop me from playing but ya. And they can't possibly stop gold spammers they can just simply find the most populated area and advertise there. It was done on PW.

Let me clarify because I have access to Russian OBT.

Initially they only sold items for /world and /yell channels which was alright. But recently they also introduced similar CS items for /zone chat. And although players don't like it one bit, this new feature stays (at least so far).

A major drawback, associated with this innovation: you don't have any kind of free LFG-like channel anymore. Essentially, you're limited to /guild, /say and /whisper.

This is MESSED up.  I don't mind the world or yell thing so much, but if it's just regular zone chat then forget it, I'm out.

This is reminiscent of Silk Road's World chat item mall feature.

Not flaming you or whatever wowfan but since your playing allods OBT and I guess you been playing it for a few weeks and/or visit their forums, how's the leveling speed after the current cap in closed beta? Is it faster say then runes of magic or at least more enjoyable? (hated the 1000s of quests that gave sooo low of exp each)

The major difference here being ours is supported by GPotato and thus will probably have lots of changes, specifically to the cash shop.

    Never played RoM.

However, leveling in Allods gets more complicated past LVL23-24. You arrive to the first PvP zone by that time and, as usual, the first PvP zone is the place where you must endure the worst of it. There are many PvP-related quests and as soon as highlevel gankers appear, things get really messy, especially during peak hours. Nival has taken steps to alleviate the problem. They implemented PvP flags - something very similar to PvE servers in WoW. But this obviously wasn't planned in the early stages of development, so there are some flaws. The most annoying one is the easily farmable buff that allows to attack PvP-unflagged characters.

Also, somewhere past LVL30 quests aren't sufficient anymore so a certain amount of grind is to be expected. Can't really tell how much (I've never got that far) but according to forum posts it's roughly 2-3 levels worth of XP.

All in all, it doesn't take too long to get to 40. For some people 1-40 is just a couple of weeks, although they're probably nolifers.

Ah good thanks seems not that bad.

My problem with runes of magic was because of a load amount of quests that gave so low of exp reward that made it boring for me.

Guild Wars? Or course it was a buy to play, but free to play afterwards. MMO's are going to get money out of you one way or another and I've kind of loosened up on my anti free to play with cash shop thinking now days since a lot of pay to plays are using cash shops anyways.

I would rather play a free to play with a cash shop than a pay to play with a cash shop. I mean look at CO (Champions Online), they took an item they KNEW everyone would need at some point or other. Made it difficult to get in game and then added it to there cash shop.

So... I'm not as adverse to Free to plays with cash shops as much now days looking at the state of pay to plays. Now days it's about what ever is fun for me. Allods is fun for me and as long as the cash shop doesn't ruin my fun I could care less.

Guild Wars system is fair and the most reasonable for a PvP-based game. That's why GW is still so popular. I predict that GW2 will be a massive success.

On the other hand, f2p games with cash shop are doomed. They're just exploiting novelty effect now, when MMO market is still booming. But it's almost over. The competition will only get worse, because Blizzard won't rest on its laurels and other big players will want to keep their market shares (at the very least).

If you're making a f2p game and going to sell something, you'll end up selling unfair advantages. Even if that's against your intentions. There will be "this one time" when you'll desperately need some extra revenue. Such things happen to every company. You'll give in, and then there's no turning back.

The paid chats of zones it is a trifle, Allody-online: no donate, no game. My advice delete game, it's Russian epic fail.

Summoner 40 level, rus server "Sumerky Bogov".

So after a little more looking into it it breaks down like this currently on the Russian version, which is a few updates further than ours and in open beta:

    1.  Astral megaphones - Used similarly to a /yell where the entire faction can see what you say.

    2.  Megaphones - Used for local zone chat.

Both of these are purchased in the cash shop.

Having to pay for items to use on a special channel, or for yelling is one thing, but having to pay just to talk in a region or zone chat, no thanks.

zone megaphones are used for "special chat." not zone chat. We believe this is to allow you to have colored text in zone chat or something. you dont need it to talk in zone.
