Help with "Building" a character.

ab29xab29x Member Posts: 364

I looked at the Wiki and it's not exactly the information I'm looking for.

I'm looking for a site/forum that talks about builds, i.e. if I wanted to make a mage, this is the route to take.. do this skill do that skill etc.

Any links would be appreciated.

I know Xipher has done some guides to help new players too, try searching his posts here and on the official forums. But like above,

50 lesser magic (get utility spells stamina to strength ect)

    50 greater magic

    Pich a school of magic,

Fire, Air, Water, Earth, Arcane, Necromancy

Getting witchcraft to 75 is advised for Witchesbrew spell.

I went for fire as it costs alot of sulphur and I had lots from all the mining I do.

    Infliction Mage:

    90 water (toxic rain)

     90 necro (eye rot)

75 witchracft (needles actually at 1, but you need 75 witchcraft to get necro)

    50 GM (rend,venom)

This is a long grind, but you'll have great damage spells for mages, great debuffs, + infliction spells to eat through metal-wearer's armor.

Of course you'll want to get a 2h weapon up to 50 mastery, and your bow skills up for PVE/water fighting.

Thanks guys,  I appreciate the advice.

Any tips on what to work it up on? or is anything that moves the status quo?

Edit: Oh, and what about stats? do they go passively by using certain skills? or are they actively worked up as well?

    This isn't accurate.

50 lesser magic is needed to unlock greater magic and 50 greater magic is needed to unlock fire, earth, air, and water (which is mostly ice, but the semantics hardly matter).

The aforementioned utility spells are stamina to health, health to mana, and mana to stamina.

Spellchanting and witchcraft open up at 25 greater magic, and arcane and necromancy open when you get the respective spell lines to a certain level that I do not remember.

Being pure mage requires probably hardest grind in DF, but it isn't 6 months. Going from 1 to 50 in any school of magic except "Spell chanting" is doable in 1 day.

You are actually gaining new spells faster than you are able to learn how to use them.

IMO It's best to join clan as soon as possible, try group PvE with clan members and don't worry about skills for a while. And of course take part in group PvP by defending their city or hamlet.

After few weeks you'll be either combat ready, or at least you'll have clear picture what skills you need to grind during next group PvE.

If you have the money, grinding WC to 75 takes 1 day, Grinding Water to 100 will take 3-4 days, Grinding Necro might take a little longer. The archery shouldn't be a grind because you just skill it up killing mobs. The thing that will take the longest is the melee.
