This game is being released with the lowest hype I have seen for many year for a supposed AAA+ title.
Is it a bad thing?
To be honest I think it is,we have so many bad MMO's released in the last few years and with a title such as Star Trek you would think it would be everywhere...but it is not!
Having gone searching for the info(and I had to search, not see it in magazines or on TV) it would seem this title is going to be a cash in on the name.
I mean normally coming a big game release in the mmo world we are all talking about it,not this one, even in my mmo guild we are talking of FF14,Star wars and maybe even the forgotten world..though no mention of Star Trek.
I think if this game was going to do the name justice we would all be jumping up and down this close to release, though it would seem Global agenda and APB are causing more hype....does not look to good for Star Trek...
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

Most people by "hype" mean " to intensify (advertising, promotion, or publicity) by ingenious or questionable claims, methods, etc. (usually fol. by up)." So the fact you don't see things in magazines (though there are things in magazines) or on TV doesn't mean there isn't hype. There is certainly hype in the videos they make and on forums. Part of that, like Neorandom said, is certainly because this is a Star Trek game. There have been several people on these forums talking about how you can do anything in the shows in this game and how it's going to be an awesome MMO (that's perhaps a more extreme example of the hype, but there's certainly hype).

If you look at the hype for the likes of WoW,LotRo,WAR,AoC in recent years then Star Trek is almost like a lower league football result compared to the top division.
I could be wrong and so could the guys in our MMO guild but we are of the opinion that this game is going to be sold on its name and not the content,I see the game doing well enough in box sales but very poor in subs, maybe the guys at the top see it in the same way and will gladly take the box sales and whatever is left over in return for releasing a game with the Star Trek name.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
take the fucking risk , subscribe for a month ... lose or win 15$
for me theres no excuse for bugs , unbalance or whatsorever non palyability in a mmo these days
They dont deliver they fail ... as simple as that
Then sadly you will never play an MMO again because all of them will have that in some form.
Guildwars didn't, well possibly some balancing issues but they fixed them rather fast. Still, you have a point, coffegrunt will have a lot of disappointment in his gaming career.
Perhaps, but we are talking about a video game. ANY tv commercial spots for that game is going to reach, in my opinion, a MUCH broader and larger audience than it would on a couple dozen video gaming websites. Internet buzz is much different than a well promoted video game. And I think that is actually part of the problem with all the games coming out nowadays. With the exception of WoW, you rarely see any other mmo's advertising. Personally, I think thats why wow is able to keep its numbers up vs other companies. Its definitely not because the gaming quality is soooo much better than everyone elses.
I agree. Until you start seeing massive amounts of people talking about STO and how great it is then is really just another MMO release like all the others. World of Warcraft is really just using a concept that has been around ever since television was invented. The thing is, they are the only ones doing it. Until there is a real marketing campaign and massive amounts of air time then any talk of hype is just imagined.
Originally posted by DoomsDay01 They are releasing weather you want them to or not. Thats not going to change. What you can do is simply not give them any money till you feel the game is closer to what you want to play.
That's very sound advice. It sounds like they are going to restrict Open Beta to pre-orders only (or to keys won from a contest)..... which (IMO) is generaly a bad sign about the quality of the game. Companies that are confident about the quality of thier game want to give as many people exposure to it as possible before launch..... having a ton of folks also helps with things like stress testing the infrastructure. Maybe I'm wrong, but it kinda feels like they are trying to hide the quality of thier product from people prior to purchase.
So no open beta for me No big loss, I wasn't really interested in playing this one....just kinda curious as to what it actualy felt like hands on. Lets see if a few months after launch they start offering free trials.
I think the gaming community is tired of accepting half-baked rushed out the door games. We aren't gonna take it anymore. There needs to be a higher standard. The ONLY way to vote is with your money.
Only those that buy every release are sick of "half-baked" releases.
I 'm looking forward to it. Most games in the genre are fantasy so its nice to have sci-fi title coming out. I'll pick it up when it comes out. If it provides me a month or two entertainment, i'll consider it money well spent.
Well, I'm not planning on buying it now. I just don't see enough good in it to wash out the bad. When the open beta starts, ask me more on this.... but for now, STO is just all hype.
"Of all the things wrong with today's RPGs, 2D characters on a 3D background is the worst."
Honestly I am very surprised the Star Trek License for the game hasn't been pulled much like the Marvel pulling when they saw the disaster that was Champions online in production. They cut out a majority of the major races and their respective ships, and decide on a 2 faction system to start. Thats reasonable if you do that and still can't build a game with 2 complete factions its bad news. The dev letters to the community stating that if "the community" requests more Kling pve content then they will make it? What kind of BS answer to a lack of content is that? This game looks like a swing and a miss at cashing in on the new younger Star Trek movie.

Actually, that's not a fair comparison. Champions is an excellent superhero mmo, compared to the older and more limited counterpart: City of Heroes. Matter of fact, -because- of Champions, CoH is starting to do major improvements so they don't lose the customer base to Champions.

Not to hate on Cryptic because I have never played one of their games but a producer at my work was in the friends and family alpha......he said it sucked. Another friend was in the closed beta. He is a veteran of everquest, lineage, and wow. He said it sucked. Finally, another coworker (I work at an online gaming company) played the game. This guy is a hardcore mmorpg player through and through (the type of guy to be one of the first 1000 to play darkfall, basically a UO vet). He said that the game sucked.
Take whatever I say as you will but I already know that I wont touch this game.
My opinion is that STO AND EVE fall miles short of what the game SHOULD be.
None of these small time developers should be attempting such a game,it is imo a VERY hard game to master.
I feel SOE would be the best developer suited to making a game of this magnitude and even then it would be extremely costly and time consuming.
A game such as this would be like trying to make 2 or 3 games at the same time,it is just too much work for a small budget,so what you are left with is inferior products.
I can't really knock CCP or Cryptic, because if you asked me what i would expect before they even started production,i would not have expected any better, these developers are not capable of making these space ship type games.Something is going to lack either the ship or the combat,graphics/animations or everything else outside the ship,if there is any content in that area.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I didn't like any of Cryptics previous games. Though, I have to admit that this game has taken my fancy. It has because even though it's not a simulation, which some people want, its a very fun game. It lets you enjoy the star trek lore, along with the possibility of taking it further and say RP'ing with extreme fans etc, who would tell you about (what im finding out to be) the quite deep lore surrounding the Star Trek worlds.
Truth is if your going into it thinking 'This sucks' then your not going to like it. Your already looking for faults and you will find them, but it's sad that you'll miss the sheer fun it can give you. I have friends who didn't find it their cup of tea. They didn't say 'It sucked'. They said, 'I don't like it, but I can see why others would.' Which just seems to roll along with the already well known fact, 'you can't please everyone'.
This is relevant to all MMO's by the way. Go in negatively, and you are wasting your time. I'm pretty neutral on this game, though I will play it. I feel I have to point out the good for everytime someone says the bad without even acknowledging the good. If someone says it sucks, and works in a game company by the way, then they must work for nothing short of Bioware to have the credentials to be able to say that. It's a good game. It will be a solid MMO name along with the others, but It isn't the second coming, so don't expect it to be.
Longing for Skyrim, The Old Republic and Mass Effect 3

I'm sorry, but I had a good laugh at that line. I doubt anyone will trust SOE with a great IP again after what they did to Star Wars with SWG. Lucasarts certainly learned their lesson since they decided to trust the next Star Wars MMO with Bioware and that game looks to be shaping up nicely.

The only mmo developer that has the money and the patients to perfect a game in this genre is blizzard and frankly I don't see them ever doing one. Bioware seems to be doing a good job thus far with their game but it looks like it'll be focused on the planets rather than space.

i doubt he's even played Eve, just a troll, and not even a particularly well informed one at that.. besides anyone who thinks SOE can handle games of 'this magnitude' ... .. is several sandwiches short of a picnic...

Problem solved.

Well they will make money if they 'fail' at making an MMO, so they have an IP that really, they can't 'miss' with. Box sales alone will be good.
