A part of the FAQ many of you will want to know about.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Where can I get a beta key?

A: Open beta keys are included in all pre-order boxes, and are given out by selected partners. Check back later for the list of partners that are giving out beta access.

So keep an eye open for those 'partners'.

More like 'Open PR and hype'. Although the NDA is dropping so I'll be using the key I was sent to check the game out and probably drop a report here on my experience, good or bad as I'm sure others will be as well.

I'm not expecting much, which is probably a good thing. Maybe they'll surprise me. Though to be fair all I really give  a crap about is the space combat. If I can basically do that the entire time and it's actually fun then I may buy it.

Open beta does not mean that the game is free for all to play. It only means that the NDA has been lifted and that they are moving on towards stress testing. Usually the last stage before launching a game.

You do know that some of the pages (and 'definitions') given in Wiki (particularly those related to MMOs and software) have been getting 'edited' lately?

I suspect 'industry insiders' to suit their own needs.  Draw your own conclusions.

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.

Just my opinion, but i think Cryptic is cash strapped. Just do not have the funds to pay for a real open beta.

They could barely handle the people from FP who were added at end of CB trying to get them all downloaded and into beta. Imagine that times 100.

Will be interested to see how they handle all the pre-orders dling and trying to get in tomorrow. Maybe i am wrong, we will see.

Yeah not exactly "open". Then again, some of the MMOs are released in a beta state to begin with, and paying for beta... I'd say this particular portion of the gaming industry is very loose with it's definitions for certain.

parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.

The link I sent was merely the first hit on google when searching for open beta terminology. Most, if not all, games go through an open beta where the developer, distributor chooses how many keys are to be given out and to whom.

There is no conspiracy it´s been this way for years, atleast when it comes to more popular games that already have a pre launch fan base larger then their needed beta quantity. Wheater it´s bad wording to call it open beta or not is another question though.

All statements I make is from my point of view unless stated otherwise.

Nah, I don't think it is that bad at all.  They are not meeting their fiscal targets, but they are not in the "strapped for operating cash" zone from what I have seen.
They could barely handle the people from FP who were added at end of CB trying to get them all downloaded and into beta. Imagine that times 100.
When CO launched they had tens of thousands logged in simultaneously, with the servers running smoothly.  The night before closed beta for STO began (the public date anyway) they took CO down for maintenance, and that was the start of the semi-regular server trouble for CO, lag on the weekend, etc.   Before that performance was so smooth, like driving on the freeway in a small town.  I am sure that some machines were moved to STO, but the beta can't be that big so some machines just went away, back to the lessor.  My prediction is that they know how to run a smooth launch, and aside from people who will complain about big downloads tomorrow (what do they expect when everyone downloads several GBs at once?), the beta will not be plagued with any technical issues.

Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.

I really wish companies would stop misusing the term "Open Beta" as it has been awhile since I've seen a big release MMORPG actually have a real Open Beta.

  • mlambert890mlambert890 Member UncommonPosts: 136

They're not misusing the term, you are misinterpreting it.  "Open Beta" does not mean "unlimited free-for-all beta".  It simply means wider distribution.

Use some logic.  The point of a beta is to surface problems with the code.  To collect feedback... CONSTRUCTIVE feedback... in order to make last minute modifications before RTM (or before deciding that another beta round is, in fact, needed)

Now I'll leave aside that from personal experience, 99.9999% of "open beta testers" are ass hats who are full of crap and just want free access to as much as possible, the status of saying "i was in BETA" and the ability to complain about MORE stuff on message boards.  I'll leave aside discussing the actual percentages of people who choose to enter a beta of any kind and ACTUALLY take that responsibility SERIOUSLY and do *their part* (hint - its LOW)

Leave ALL of that aside and assume that everyone who raises their hand has good intentions and genuinely wants to put real time and effort into making a better product... The product team resources are STILL FINITE.  There are DIMINISHING RETURNS.  What is the point of having 250,000 beta testers if you have resources to manage 1000?

But of course there is no sense letting logic ruin the fun of a good conspiracy and persecution complex fest!  Its like therapy for the jaded geek!

This is Great News - and Beta, well its an excellent way to test servers etc. If players lose charators or items well thats beta. I for one and looking forward to checking this game out :) People will find fault with this and that and I think thats great too- This will focus the developers etc onto immediate issues :)  Some players will get miffed at issues, I encourage them to relax. Beta is always a strain on every new game, and players. To help the dev ppl, recreate the issues, gather facts, this will help all of us in the long run as it can only serve to make STO a dynamic evolving game. Not even sure what to play yet - Klingon, Federation, hmmm... Had beter get at it !!! See u all in STO !!!!!! :)

This would be great, IF Gamestop and Cryptic hadn't dropped the ball on getting the codes out to their stores. I've been told to keep calling every day since January 4th, and they STILL haven't gotten them in yet. I'm buying the collector's edition so this is a tad annoying. I still don't understand why email isn't a viable option to send the codes out for preorders.

They're using it correctly. It's MMO gamers that have incorrectly decided that Open Beta somehow means "Everyone come play for free"

Wow you guys are really un-thankful remind me to never post a link to something helpful on here again. I post a way to at least get into open beta and all i get is moaning about a DL line, your not gonna get around that unless you pre-ordered or are a paying costumer of one of the download sites which so far they have only listed Fileplant.

  • keolienkeolien Member Posts: 198

lol, thanks for the heads up. I just got signed up through the beta with tentonhammer.

You could try to download it off the torrent or fileplanet. For some reason the torrent wont work with firefox, but worked just fine using internet explorer.

Im getting about 200kbs off the torrent, its like 600 seeders and 7000 leechers
