General: SyFy and Trion World Network Team Up for New TV Show, MMOG

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

NBC Universal's SyFy Network has teamed up with MMOG developer Trion World Network for a unique project involving a new TV show and MMOG that are set to "co-evolve" together. The project, which is currently known as "One Earth," will reflect developments in the game world within the TV series and vice-versa.

This deal was made possible through an investment from NBC Universal and GE Capital's "Peacock Equity Fund," which is a digital-media focused venture capital fund.

Find out more about the new project at the GEReports blog, which part one of a video series entitled "Gaming the System."

This has great potential.  I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Let's just hope the writers behind both the show and game are intelligent, mature, and talented artists.  Otherwise this project will join the dustbin of history in short course.

I thought this would be a good idea about 5 years ago. Don't tell me my ideas are 5 years ahead of everyone else?

Years ago I know someone somewhere in the Stargate franchise thought of doing this and it was discussed here.  It of course never panned out.

Didn't SiFi talk about this a while ago? This seems really familiar. I'm getting Deja-vu....

this is probably too tempting for some of the "uber leet hardcore holier than thou and oh so kool" shithead guilds that like to a flock to a new game, hardcore themselves to end game, wreck the whole thing and leave for another game.

I feel bad for the writers for the tv show having to keep up with it and having to write characters for the show named Uberkilla, Iteabagya, and similar :P

Grouping in Old school mmo's: meeting someone at the bar and chatting, getting to know them before jumping into bed.  Current mmo's grouping: tinder.  swipe, hookup, hope you don't get herpes, never see them again.

I wonder if it would feature gear grinding through instances...

Honestly I even don't know what could make interesting material to be shown on the TV show for more than a few episodes, if the revenue is planned to be coming mainly from it. It doesn't usually feature flexible enough gameplay nor graphics.

Most interesting thing in my opinion would be political based games with territorial control, such as EVE and DF, but even these would be quite NOT interesting for someone not directly involved with it, and unless you're going to do a hell of a narration, no way it can feature drama (even action, as in this case it would be RPG based) and all the other mass appeal crap.

Anyway, it's an interesting idea, though I can't think about how to execute it successfully with the current concepts, guess that's what makes the whole thing interesting. If it's a TV "reality" show it could be finally the one MMO to feature permanent death, haha :P

Impress the genre with an innovative experience, it surely needs it, especially this premisse against statistic content and into dynamic content, though Trion has been promissing this for a while on their titles.

    Sometimes... they are. :)

That's what you get for sitting on that bushel of fifties and not investing them in that idea of yours!

i wonder if it will cover up all the lame things in this industry like:

    Unbalanced PvP

    Gold sellers

    Grinding

    crappy quests

    horrible communities (in some games)

    ruthless people

    foul mouthed kids

    ...ect

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Same guys that are making Heroes of Telara, but don't have anything launched that I can find, anyway.

No telling how this will turn out but I like seeing new things being tried.

They are most likely  going to portray the outcomes themselves and not actual player names/clans/squads/guilds whatever, Unless they enforce very agressive name restrictions.  Interesting, but probably a gimmick that will lead to a mediocre combination of both.

This looks rather interesting, but unless its done right with talented *experienced* people on both sides, its going to crash and burn big time. They obviously have a great deal of money and resources available. Lets see what they do with them.

Cool idea but I'm not sure how this will work out.  One of the biggest issues I see is timing, and to what level Comcast is interested/involved.  For those unaware, Comcast is buying the NBC/Universal from GE barring any regulatory SNAFU.  Odds are this is already OK'd and Comcast is on board, but I'll still question their commitment to this project.

I can see where this could be great, and see a lot of ways it could fail horribly.

I see, so when the show gets cancelled, then the game gets shut down for good, great concept.

On paper this sounds epic... In reality, depending on how they have it set up, it could be a complete cluster$#*%. It's is a fantastic idea though and it's something that has been brought up before. To be honest I never thought that any TV exec would ever see the potential in something like this. It was one of those pie in the sky ideas one never thought would become reality. I'll remain cautiously optimistic anyhow and definitely keep eyes on this as it progresses.

    They did.......

    Sci-Fi Channel creating an MMO/TV show hybrid/Jun 5th 2008 <link

A preview of that page: The game was originally planned to be an outgrowth of the channel's popular Battlestar Galactica remake, but the developers at Trion World Network decided it would be better to start fresh with new characters and environments. Both the show and the series will be set 80 to 100 years in the future and launched not that much sooner in the summer of 2010.

Good news regardless let's wait and see what they are able to deliver

Trion World has 3 studios in 3 different cities.  One is working on Heroes of Telara, another on this co-op with syfy and is co-oping with a RTS game studio Petroglyph to make a MMORTS.  The third I think just does netcode and things like this.  You are right that they haven't published anything, but they must have gotten massive funding from different sources.  It is interesting to see a company come out of nowhere with 3 studios co-developing 3 pretty high quality MMORPG's.  The 3 studios have some info here:

    www.trionworld.com/studio.php

I have been talking about these three projects for a while now after I found their site.  This info was up when they revealed Heroes of Telara a while back.

    TRION REDWOOD CITY

    Channel 1 - Heroes of Telara™, MMORPG

Heroes of Telara is the next evolution of massively online fantasy role-playing games. Taking full advantage of Trion's server-based technology, Heroes of Telara promises an unprecedented level of rich and dynamic entertainment in a stunning ever-changing world. Limitless new content, unexpected challenges and recurring events will push the gaming experience to the highest level, defining a new era of online gaming.

    TRION SAN DIEGO

Channel 2 (working title), MMORTS with Third-Party Development Studio Petroglyph Games Inc.

Channel 2 is from world renowned real-time strategy game experts, Petroglyph. Trion and Petroglyph are creating a massively multiplayer online real-time strategy game, set to define a new genre and standard for online games. Petroglyph is utilizing Trion's advanced server architecture, designed to enable massive scalability, dynamic content evolution and cross platform development, to create an epic gaming experience.

Channel 3 (working title), MMOARPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Action Role Playing Game) produced in partnership with Syfy Channel

Channel 3 is a groundbreaking collaboration between Trion World Network and Syfy Channel. A dynamic, connected entertainment experience, Trion's game and Syfy Channel's television show will blend seamlessly, allowing fans of the universe to enjoy it in two mediums and watch developments in the show affect the game and events in the game affect the show.

    I can see it now...............

Screenwriter01: Hey Bob, how would you put "Selling credits and premium gears cheap, also offering powerlevel services" as a gold spammer?  I have this guy standing on a street corner yelling it over and over again for the whole episode.

Screenwriter02: Go to that website with the retarded lolcats things, I'm sure you'll find something.  That's where I got  the dialogue for the strike team that keeps raiding the alien ship over and over again.  This would be so much easier if these people could spell.......

I found something else that is pretty interesting.  Trion World is also a publisher so they will be developing these three MMO's, and self publishing them.

I hope it works out. I would really like to see it come out and see how that would work. Good Luck SyFy.

I just dont picture this being all that good. Ether the Show will Suck, or the game will suck. MAYBE EVEN BOTH

  • sir_xandersir_xander Member UncommonPosts: 2

Everyone is looking at the potential of this, but I'm gonna just come out and say that failure is eminent. There is too much BS in the MMO world that the everyday TV viewer is ill-prepared for.

My biggest concern is that I have to watch the TV show to understand the events of the game, and being required to watch TV (with out Tivo or perhaps on Hulu) at all is pretty painful as it is.

Hehe, yeah.  Actually the only way I can see something like this working out is if the TV show took a tongue-in-cheek approach to satirize all the stupid crap in mmorpgs.

Like have one of the main characters getting a "quest" from a NPC to recover the <<<Lost Data Cubes Morjignik>>>.  But the data cubes are 50 feet away sitting on a table.  The hero scratches his head looking puzzled but then shrugs and does it.  But then other people start clamoring for him to fetch this or that from a few yards away untill he concludes that they are all insane.

Stuff like that might make for an entertaining show...for a while.

    WTF

The closes thing I got as FUNNY from this idea, was the fact that IT WASNT FUNNY.

Kinda like the idea behind EPIC MOVIE and MEET THE SPARTANs

Wow you guys have the worst imagination ever.  Either you need to get stoned and think about the idea or you need to stop playing games that hold your hand for every second of the way giving you these horribly poor imaginations.  Think about it.  It could be very, very cool.
