Star Wars: The Old Republic: EA's Riccitiello Lets Slip 2011 Launch Date?

garrettgarrett MMORPG.COM Staff UncommonPosts: 284

Shacknews reports some MMO news from the Electronic Arts Q2 Earnings conference call. The quote below is reportedly from EA CEO John Riccitiello in regards to a "major MMO" launch for 2011.

"One key driver is going to be the launch date of our major MMO. As it stands today, the game is making great progress towards a Spring 2011 launch. But given the volatility of this particular sector and the fact that we haven't yet provided a specific launch date, at least for now, we're excluding the revenue, or will be excluding the revenue, from our FY11 plans."

Though no name is given, we can only speculate that Star Wars: The Old Republic is the front runner in the above comment. Please stay tuned for more details on this announcement.

This wouldn't be the first time Riccitiello had a case of loose lips with regards to The Old Republic, as he unintentionally pre-empted BioWare's E3 announcement of the game early last year.

This is good news for me, and for others they will feel the disturbance in the force.

But there is one thing that developers can never keep pace with players on and that is content, and in a MMO Content is King, if you don't have enough your game will fail and if it not polished enough your game will most likely fail.

So let Bioware have another 2 years to work on and polish up SWTOR if you want a game that is going to be worth the money... if you just want to be a gimped Jedi or Sith then let them released this year is my thoughts.

I can only see this as good news if it pertains to ToR. More time to develop, test, and polish content.

More than enough time to implement space exploration and combat!

That's really stupid.  You're saying either let them have 2 years to polish it up or might as well release it this year?  They're giving them another year.  Is that not a good middle-ground?  You don't think another year is worth it?

    Good news!!!

As this isnt the first time he's let slip info and its been correct we can only hope. I dont think its a bad idea for another year to go by without seeing this game. All we have seen so far is a few planets and the classes. They still need to work on races and more than likely the vaunted storyline for each of the classes. So imo the more time the better quality this will hopefully be.

Overall I am happy that the game is getting so much development invested into it, so I am not trying to complain or pick a fight, but as it is I have already resigned myself based on the game engine they are using that the game won't be cutting edge in graphics (they want it to be accessible, I get that) or gameplay (they want to go with what has worked in the past, fine), and if it is not out until spring 2011 or even later, these aspects may become more outdated.  Maybe by the time the game launches it will have support to run in a browser and attract 60 million players on facebook :-)

Keep in mind, EA's fiscal year 2011 runs from April of 2010 to March of 2011.

I really hope that they're referring to TOR. Take your time and do it properly guys.

This really isn't a shock at all.  They are looking to release Mass Effect 2 soon and that's probably Bioware's main concern at this point.  After ME2 launches I think SW:TOR is their next major release so thing will probably kick in to high gear with beta testing etc.  meh

My thought is this will probably be pushed back to fall 2011.  That is how things ordinarily go with these games.

  • elockeelocke Member UncommonPosts: 4,335

Funny, everyone here is excited about the game possibly releasing in 2011 in order to make it a better game, while for me, I'm glad it will get pushed so that I can actually enjoy it when it launches without contending with the other multitude of MMOs coming out this year. Whew. My wallet thanks you Bioware! Now, give me Star Trek and FFXIV to tide me over to 2011 and I'll be a happy gamer.

Anyone who expected it sooner hasn't followed the development of many games. A project of this scale takes more than four years if the developers know what's good for it, and BioWare tends to.

Judging from the comment, and the vagueness, its obvious they aren't just kicking it out the door like most of the MMOs released recently.  Regardless of what the impatient say, I'm glad to see this game in such strong development.  We're getting so much information about what will be in game so far, and theres still so much time for additional polish and content.

It's hilarious how many believe he makes "slips". He'd have been fired by now for all his "slips" ( regarding other ventures in the past, not just SW:ToR ) if they were really "slips". It's nothing but a really simple PR ploy to drum up more hype and keep everyone interested. Cheap marketing works better than all the advertisements.

Add Dragon Age expansion to that.

And that info makes me sad, I was hoping for this year, development or not..

I had forgotten the expansion for DA, that's a good point.

Aye, although firing a CEO isn't that easy and certainly wouldn't be done for something as trivial as letting slip something like that.  "We're going to be releasing a major MMO in the spring" isn't exactly a huge trade secret .

meh now TOR will have to compete with GW2...and so far GW2 will knock it out of the park....thats not to say im hating on TOR as I am hoping it will be good but so far the info we have on it is crap and nothing about any other core features a side from damn story and damn planets.

Why is everybody ignoring the most important post on this entire thread?!?!?!?!?!  A spring FY11 release could mean we are 4-8 months away not 2 years.

I don't think anyones ignoring it,   personally I understand it, but it really doesn't change anything. He said it looks like they might be able to launch for this fiscal year, but they aren't counting on it.  Sounds good to me.

Patience, it will come out when they think its ready enough to be released. BioWare knows what theyre doing so relax and enjoy the peacefullness. Because when its released youre not going to have any of it :)

Indeed. Go to various online stores and you will see the slated release date of SW:TOR is set on October 31th, 2010.
