The presentation in Dragon Age is sharp, but it isn't nearly as impressive as other games. In fact, some of the character models and graphics look like they are a few years old, so they don't pack the same visual punch you'd expect from such a high profile game. On a positive note, the ability to manipulate the camera viewpoints is useful and well executed.
Incredibly deep and expansive, Dragon Age: Origins is one of those titles that can easily swallow up dozens of hours of play and keep you coming back for more.
The fact that BioWare chose to include downloadable content, including a new character and side quest, on launch day proves that they have an extensive plan for supporting the game.
Couple that with the fact that each character can be developed in radically different ways, and you have an adventure that earns its own place among BioWare's expansive RPG collection. This is the kind of adventure that fantasy RPG fans have been hoping that BioWare would deliver – a game with a ton of re-playability and an incredibly vivid world that is the start of an impressive franchise.
Vivid world! have i missed something because the world is a linear box that loads you to each section without leaving the path.
Go play Divinity 2 Ego Draconis and then tell me that DAO has a "vivid world".
What i personaly dont understand is why people want a game filled with story(I dont mean that a game shouldnt have story, just not implementet in a boring way that takes away from gameplay) and cutscens instead of gameplay, open and big worlds, exploration. Does developers realy have to destroy gaming with nonsense instead of actually doing a GAME? Its crap like this that in the end will destroy the gaming industry, you guys can read a book, leave us gamers alone thank you very much.

I know right? I mean how dare people have different preferences than you. How dare people enjoy story driven games. If you don't like it, don't play it, don't buy it, and go enjoy games you want. I mean it's not like Bioware hasn't made similar games...well for as long as the company has been around. Take your soapbox someplace else.
If the open world map could actually just be run through like Fallout3, DA would've been even better. Once you reach a location you have speedy travel, but you should be able to explore. The current travel system should've been reserved for caravans you pay for. The linear world was its biggest drawback. The story was very well done for an RPG. The impact you had on the characters was fantastic. I liked the combat. Very strategic and challenging on hard. There just wasn't much room for exploration.
Thank God there are people that agree with me that this game is boring as crap. I felt like I was the only one! People have to realize not EVERYTHING Bioware does automatically a "masterpiece".
And yes Joshan, a game THIS slow paced should have had WAAAAAAAY more room for exploration. The linear-ness was shockingly idiotic.

I agree. Dam I fell for the hype.
I just wanted a cool RPG console game for a break from WoW.
This game sucks (IMO).
The way I expected the game was:
Class System-
Large Open World like Elder Scroll-
Great +++ Combat-
NPC Party Members in Live action (sort of like Dot Hack, but tons better with new age gaming. Also like Tales series npc teammate system)-
Great EXP lvling/Development system -
Some things DA have, but still Lacks very much compared to many RPGs of the PS2/GAMECUBE/XBOX age. I had way more fun playing the Tales RPG on my GameCude, then playing DA on my PS3.
Yes! this game is boring to you and you did/do not enjoy it, I am terribly sorry for you and hope you find some hack n slash with little cutscenes and a much more open diverse world that could make you satisfied.
but,
don't feed SHIT into other's mouth about saying your opinion is THE opinion.
My opinion =/= your opinion your opinion =/= everyone's opinion therefore, Yes! this game is boring to you and you did/do not enjoy it, I am terribly sorry for you and hope you find some hack n slash with little cutscenes and a much more open diverse world that could make you satisfied. but, don't feed SHIT into other's mouth about saying your opinion is THE opinion.

I found the people's reactions in the world quite implausible. I mean, with the blight coming and all, you'd think people understood the importance of fighting together, but no, each side (humans, dwarves, elves, gee how original btw) has their petty bullshit that makes me basically go through a standard 3 level dungeon/temple/ruins and massacre everything inside, get the w/e quest item, go back to the main guy of the race, give him the item, slap his face around just so he can send me ZOMG 50 WHOLE TROOPS to fight the final battle. What a bunch of idiots.
The blight,as a main quest is actually far more terrible than anything else you'll encounter in the game, except maybe for the quests where you have to bring 15 items X (rat tails? don't remember/care). HOLY SHIT DUDE THE FREAKING BLIGHT IS COMING AND YOU WANT FREAKING RAT TAILS/MANA POTIONS/UNDEAD TESTICLES? By the way, this isn't the first blight and it isn't the last. This makes it even more generic and mundane. I mean, for dragon age 2, we will probably have to fight THE NEXT BLIGHT.
The game had a ridiculous amount of unnecessary fights that got tedious to the extreme. There is auto levelling, which makes item management and pimping out characters a waste of your time and effort. Especially considering the last fight can be won almost without your participation.
Most of the player characters are actually pretty predictable in what they say, which becomes intolerable after a few hours.
All in all,the game doesn't come close to the Baldur's Gate series, and it really doesn't feel like "spiritual successor" of anything to me. Didn't really feel like my choices affected anything in the game, except for the type of soldiers I got during the final battle. Gee, thanks. I guess.
The one thing I liked though, was the Fade world in the mage's tower. That had a BG-ish feel to it. Was probably the only original/fresh idea in the entire god damn game.
Divinity 2 Ego Draconis wipes the floor with DAO on the PC..
And people really think that BioWare are going to save the mmorpg community with SWTOR,yeah right. I can't wait to say to the rampant fan boys "i told you so".
Well since Im all for console gaming I have to say it was somewhat enjoyable. The charecters are memorable and the graphics are.... different but a good different. The combat wasnt bad, KOTOR was very much like this game and I found that very enjoyable and so did many others. Maybe its just that MMO players are used to the "MMO" factor in games. :P
I did notice that everyone raved on about this game when it first came out. Seemed that everyone was playing it and trying to convince me to get it. 2 weeks later everyones back to their usual MMO, so I figured that it got boring. Just for something fun and as a distraction I got Torchlight, and its been good fun so far.
There's only so much replayability in a game like this. Believe me, I played the heck out of it. But until new content comes out (in feb I think?) it will have to wait.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Wow... I just read through a couple of pages... Seriously the OP is the reason why raiding in WoW went from hard (Skilled, Hardcore players) to easy (I shootz arrowz and backstaberz) BC definitely ruined that game. I personally thought this game was great. I enjoyed my first playthrough and currently doing a second (Hardest mode) taking my time, playing all the DLCs and everything.
Pausing, lures into traps, into ambushes, throwing AoE's if needed but placing them in a smart area... Oh too much fun
But I guess it is a personal opinion in gaming, god forbid you think while playing a game now a days...
This game is very boring!! Damn the cut scenes are just crazy annoying. Damn and we cant even skip them. The game is just too damn slow. Tired of having to keep saving, just so I dont have to go through and repeat scenes if ya get killed.
I agree the combat is literally like.. the most boring thing I've played.

Relax, this isn't an MMO, there is no "need" to rush. Breath a little and enjoy the engrossing cutscenes and intricate dialog. Watch the cutscenes as a movie and play the game like an RTS. Each fight needs to be approached with strategy and finess, especially when on harder difficulties. I recommend turning the difficulty up, grabbing a beer, and enjoying the game, rather than nerd splooging over xp.
lol funny, but ya I liked it though I can defently see where if you are not big on teh story driven linear style game then this is not for you, if you are however a gamer that enjoys a good story based RPG then by all means you must play this game its not he best I have ever played but it is solid well worth the cost and the mod potental is high though I have yet to see great mod for it.
I guess everyone can't like it but I've always enjoyed Bioware games and love the cut scenes. It beats the hell out of reading every fucking thing. After playing it I realized how much I hate reading those damn pop up scrolls for everything. Im now considering trying SWTOR just because of the way you interact with the NPCs.
Id rather watch a movie than read a book anyday so cut scenes are my cup of tea. I really hope FFXIV has cut scenes like in FFXI but with added voice overs.
I think the OP is smoking crack..I can understand he doesn't like it but I've ready over half his rant posts..I'm not particularly sure he's clear on the difference between Action RPGs (hack n slash), Stratedgy RPGs (like final fantasy tactics) and traditional RPG video games (Baldur's Gate, KOTOR, Dragon Age, many old school JRPG's).
There's nothing wrong with the DA: O Hype its a really exciting story filled rich game. Its not a Morrowind game because guess what its not a Morrowind game made by Besethda. Both game companies highly excel in the type of RPG style that they take and the styles are very different. If you bought this game looking for Morrowind you should of gone out and bought Fracking Morrowind.
BTW it is possible to play the game for rather long periods of time without seeing a cut scene, there's quite a few things you can miss if you don't explore the areas rather well, and while its not open world style Bioware is NOT known for that style. Infact SWTOR is maybe their first attempt at something more open world (yet to be determined but from things they've said it sounds like there's some exploration excitement hidden in there).
Stop smoking crack and assuming that all RPG's are cut from the same cloth. Infact just because the industry doesn't have a seperate label for them doesn't mean that as players we shouldn't know the difference between one style of RPG from another. DA:O is everything an RPG thats going for a more modern feeling of Baldur's Gate should be. If you didnt' like Baldur's Gate, NWN, or KOTOR then I dont see why the heck you'd pick up DA:O.
Okay, so I've been playing DAO for about three weeks
...now with me, I work 10 hours a day, five days a week. Take my girlfriend and cousin to work after I get out, gotta pick them up at 10:30pm every night, and work part time on Saturdays. So I only get about 1-2 hours of play time during the weekdays, and I get as much time in on the weekends that I can, because I also have friends i guess I have to hang out with...well anyway, that gives me about 10 hours of game time per week...and I also play AoC, so I split my time between my console games, and my PC games...ANYWAY...
I've put about 15 or 16 hours in on DAO so far, and to be honest, when I first started playing, I really liked it...but it got old...fast...
I hate that it's not an open world...I was expecting an Elder Scrolls or Two Worlds style open world to explore...shit...at least a Fable 2 sized world....but no...i got this linear garbage...
The combat doesnt bother me...kinda feels like an MMO, so I can deal...I kinda like the character building, and I LOVED all the moral choices involved in the game...but I guess the fact that the world is so linear, DAO just doesnt have the staying power for me...
sucks...coulda been a good game...
PLAYING: NOTHING!!! PLAYED:FFXI, LotRO, AoC, WAR, DDO, Megaten, Wurm, Rohan, Mabinogi, RoM

Im just curious why so many of you that love the Morrowind / Elder Scrolls series expect a game made by a completely different company that has a very VERY particular style just like the Elder Scrolls developers do...to copy someone else's style? Every Morrowind / Elder Scrolls has a similar style by its developer ...and every Bioware game has a particular very well known style....both companies would piss off their actual fans to suddenly do a 180 degree turn and make someone else's game with their name on it.
I personally hated Elder Scrolls the stories are way way to light and you end up spending half the time wandering around robbing people's houses because the story is way to light. Its great if you really want to build your own story but I prefer a more RPG style of taking on a role and playing out a story which is what Bioware has perfected. If you dont like Bioware's style don't buy their damn RPG's geez.
Its like buying the Star Craft series and expecting Total War Empire or Civilization.
Like the above poster said, That's just how bioware games are and that's exactly what there known for. Im literally surprised by how many people thought it would be a open big world.
I must admit that I had a good time playing this game, even though the acting and NPC are way too Canadian. There is a storyline that you can't escape, and I felt very restricted by it. The game gets very difficult at mid point, requiring a lot of micromanagements, even though I played at the easiest level. I must be missing something or do not understand how the game works. The end is very unsatisfying, perhaps I was expecting the world to open up, or perhaps I was in a rush to finish. I cannot bear to see more blood.
There is an expansion coming. but I am not sure if I want it.

This thread is an example of why I despise the Xbox-kiddie generation of gamers. They're all about 'experience points' and not about the actual experience.

Why do you people always gotta get so upset?...oh wait...I kinda did say it was garbage...okay...maybe I was outta line a bit...
I have only played one of Bioware's games aside from DAO, and that was KOTOR, and I loved it...to be honest, I didn't know what to expect, I was just thinking it woulda had an open world...I mean, like I said, I havent really played any other games by Bioware except for an old one, now I know not to play any other Bioware games...
Ever since I started playing MMOs a couple of years back, a linear world is just kinda boring to me now...

This thread is an example of why I despise the Xbox-kiddie generation of gamers. They're all about 'experience points' and not about the actual experience.
