I did my time in the NEW clan and out of about 10-12 people I made friends with and hung with in that clan, maybe 1-2 are still around after their 30 days in NEW. .
This is the scary part. We lose 90% of our players in the first month and they will tell their friend to stay away from Darkfall. The influx of new recruits will dwindle and what makes Darkfall great will disappear. It`s sad we can`t keep our new players, because Darkfall is awsome with a high level char.
@hybridfury: your opinion on the game is the only truth? It's ok for you to spout off on what you dislike and post uninformed or incorrect information about the game, but when others correct you or say they disagree with you they can "shove it up their ass"? Classy.
You know, there's more than one job on a ship. You don't have to steer the the damn ship to be sailing. If you're on the ship, you're sailing. You CAN be on a ship on day one. You CAN man a cannon on a ship on day one if someone gives you black powder. And if you're already on a ship on day one, you're part of a clan that has black powder.
Why do you and others feel the need to project your expectations onto what the dev is saying? The dev is not saying you WILL be on a ship on day one or that everyone should expect to be on a ship on day one. They are saying you CAN. It's possible. There's no game limitation saying you can't. FFS
Leave the game already. You clearly hate it. It's not the game for you.

I don't really know why half of you are posting half the shit you are posting. First off, this is from a new players stand point, I been playing about a month and a half i guess, I'm in a very good guild with 2 holdings. I could give a shit at this point at what there is later on in the game, shove your 200 mobs up your ass cause 80% of the new player base that comes in will probably never even see a tenth of them cause they will be so bored with the only 3 mobs they are capable of killing the first month or two and quit. Second, as for the wall of lore that was posted, WHERE IS THIS IN GAME? I could really give a shit about some lore/book wrote on AV's site, lore should be tied into the game.
Edit: more lame things about this game: If your out of stamina, but you have a full bar of mana you can't cast a spell? Huh? Wtf? Swimming now causes stamina loss. So now on a swim of any distance, lets say to Cairn or Yssam, you run out of stamina and can't even defend yourself from the packs of great whites that attack you. Furthermore, I wasn't aware that great whites travelled and hunted in packs of 4 and 5, but hey whatever.
And I wonder why you are even playing the game if you hate it that much. Honestly, not trying to be mean here.
The swimming issue: get a raft? Don't just swim everywhere?
And I think they are doing events with using some of the lore, or am I mistaken? Quests tie into the lore as well.
Ruins around the world are tied to the lore as well (Chaldean ruins (or however you spell that). And if I am not mistaken they said they use those lore events to lead up to big happenings involving the lore.
Oh and again, I killed around 6 different monsters only the first two days...
......, shove your 200 mobs up your ass cause 80% of the new player base that comes in will probably never even see a tenth of them cause they will be so bored with the only 3 mobs they are capable of killing the first month or two and quit.
..... So now on a swim of any distance, lets say to Cairn or Yssam, .....
I would like to correct u in those 2 little issues (just to inform all new players comming to DF).
We have lots of new recruits and I will post here what I am advicing them:
"Don't solo near starter towns for more than a week!
This is MMO not a solo game. Don't get me wrong here...SOLO palying is both viable and profitable in DF but it's ment for more hardcore players (and those guys dont whine in forums ).
Btw there are lots of solable mobs for the 0-1 month old players.(not only 3!!!)
So now on a swim of any distance, lets say to Cairn or Yssam, ...well lets see...a new player (0-1 month old) wants to go to Cairn or Ruby or Nif or Yssam...Here is my guide:
1. Don't go. .....But I really really really MUST go!
2. Find a friend with a house and recall there! .....But I dont have any friends and I really really really MUST go!
3. Find clan with assets there and use as a home! ...But I dont want to join a Clan and I dont have any friends and I really really really MUST go!
then:
Use the small islands approach! (Ride-dismount-swim 2 min-ride-dismount-swim 2 min.....) no need to swim ALL THE WAY!!!
P.S. A new player (0-1 month old) SOLO on Ruby or Cairn will die from the mobs...
Aside from the fact that it's a massive grind fest with few quests or pve content and that it will take an average player about 3-6 months to be competitive in any form of pvp, which the game is about 85% based on, I guess it's ok....
when's the last time you played? Game's a LOT different now, man.
Edit: of course, Darkfall was never really meant to be a questing game, so you're not going to find EQ / WoW style shit here, even now.
About 5 hours ago. If the game was so awesomesauce and not such a grind fest there wouldn't constantly be 15-20 ppl goin afk in various clan cities making bloodwalls to grind out skills and there would also be a much larger player base than what there is.
To the other person who is attempting to educate me on the hardcoreness of the game, yah I don't mind that at all, but if your gonna make a game mostly based on pvp you may wanna make it accessible and doable by newcomers and not force them to grind for 3+ months at a minimum just to experience it without getting wtfpwn'd constantly with absolutely no chance.
Being that there is very little pve content or quests, as a new player you are bascially forced to grind the same mobs over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over, which there are very few different types of mobs new players can kill. Gnolls, kobolds and trolls all day long YAY! Oh, but I guess you could just sit around and hit a rock or tree node and watch your progress bar to grind stats as well so that's pretty awesome and exciting to.
A few other things that kill this game include:
Lack of variety in armor sets, everyone pretty much looks the same.
Not having to specialize in crafting makes for a shitty economy.
The chat system and UI are the worst I think I have ever seen.
Don't get me wrong I like the game and the concept, but as it is it's just a boring grind more so than other games due to the fact there isn't much pve and as a noob you really can't pvp to get your skills up. I bought a 6 month sub so AV's got some time to make some improvements before my sub runs out, but after that if it's still the same lame boring ass grind I won't be resubbing.
In conclusion, if I buy a game that advertises pretty much solely on the pvp factor I expect to be able to pvp within a reasonable amount of time. It's like buying an actual FPS game and not getting a gun and being able to shoot someone until you spend a month or 2 "earning" a gun, who want's to play that?
Edit: I would like the OP to post back when he/she gets tired of this grind, it may not happen, he/she may be one of the few that stick with it, but I'd be willing to bet he/she gets bored and quits like so many others between the 1-2 month mark.
whooa, I aggree with that,,,well stated. The only thing needs to be added is the hackability.'

Dont mix up wow with df. Massive grind fest is proceedure where the player wins 200% easily pve mobs and its somehow easy and boring and u just wait the mobs to die to collect the loot and so on.
In Df not only the mobs are harder to kill, combat is much better than wow,and since u have at same time to watch your back when u kill mobs for other player that mayjust try to snak up on you when u fight mobs its many things but not a massive grindfest farming proceedure. Dont mix up things in your head.

I think it largely depends on if someone finds a guild or not. If you can find a good guild, the game is a blast, especially at high end. I do think they need to get a free trial going soon though.

I think the people who are bitching are not talking about the skill grind but the stat grind. It has been shown though that stats do little and to be PvP competitive you need a mastery in a weapon and have some of the utility heal spells and work in a group.

Go to the newbie zone of a enemy race and PvP. The only thing stopping you is you.
The alternative is some lame ass battleground system like WAR or gutting the character progression aspect of the game... both of which would be retarded.
As a side note I don't really understand how people get bored with PvE in this game. I can fully understand getting bored with tab/target 1,2,3 PvE of normal games with a bunch of generic quests I never bother to read anyway (other than Fallen Earth)... but I don't understand how anyone can get bored of the PvE in Darkfall when the mobs are generally pretty dynamic and their is always a measure of risk of getting PKed at any moment.
Plus if you just move around to different areas of the world every now and then it keeps things pretty fresh.
You're right but nowadays gamers want the mountain brought to Mohamed, used to simple button mashing PvE which awards instant victory and awards that you don't have to travel more than 3 minutes from the quest giver to do. People get frustrated by Darkfall after having played games that have this kind of sorry excuse for PvE. Having to think for yourself and take risks and not have a set aggro range of 25 metres where they attack you one at a time like Jakie Chan online, is just too challenging for the post WoW generation for the most part.
Yeah he can PvP whenever he wants, but because he has to take a risk and a journey and work hard for the victory it's too hard. Well my advice is don't pay for a game that's too hard with boring PvE.
Step off your podium, Darkfall is no more challenging than any other MMO or even FPS. I really despise the fact that DF players try to write other people off with their misplaced elitist attitude.
If you enjoy it, great, more power to you OP. But remember every game is fun initially, and I think you may find that once the honeymoon is over, you maybe in for a short marriage.
Ok really, enough. This is an MMORPG, not an FPS. To me, and I'm sure to most, it would seem quite obvious that new players wouldn't be on equal terms with vets at the starting gate, due to the PROGRESSIVE nature of MMORPGs. I don't give a shit WHAT MMO you play, vets are going to wtfpwn the n00bs. Expect it, deal with it, skill up and get even. But stop whining.
Generally this type of locker room bully attitude is what turns me off to this game more than anything else. Its probably less MMO than planetside btw, and I dont consider planetside an MMO.
As far as vets are going to destroy noobs, sure why not. the problem is, perhaps the game is a bit too hardcore in terms of new players getting hammered by your typical sadist DF player.
And even though it seems to make you guys feel good to constantly remind other people that theyre not as good as you based soley on their gaming tastes, I assure you that its doing you more harm than good. YOU NEED MORE PLAYERS. So stuff the attitude and try to tone down your testosterone fueled outbursts.
Id rather hear people whine then beat their chests and fling poo.

Actually, that's not quite true. I just started a few days ago and have yet to be ganked by anyone, let alone attempted. I think there are towers near the starting areas to help cut down on that. Now granted, everyone should join a guild because there is safety in numbers but if getting ganked isn't your idea of fun then yeah, it's probably better to try a different game because it will happen. I miss the old UO PvP style of getting my heart racing so I'm looking forward to it.

First off, the "attitude" displayed in my quoted post above is a result of a particular a whining rant. Eventually, you can only take so much.
That said, Darkfall has mellowed out a LOT. Back in the day, you'd hardly go two hours in the n00b areas right outside city walls without being ganked and dry looted.
These days....well, I've been haning around Sandbrook the last few days, and I've see ONE red the entire time.
Furthermore, I'm not trying to make myself or anyone else "feel good", I'm just stating a rather obvious (I would THINK anyway) fact that one who has played a particular game longer is obviously going to have progressed further, and be better at said game. So new players (n00bs) should EXPECT to lose when fighting them, and view each fight as a learning experience, instead of getting butthurt and whining for several pages on MMORPG.com

It's not about being as good or not with Darkfall. Your self esteem doesn't need to come into play here man, so relax. It's about whether Darkfall is a good fit for you or not. Being a long time EVE player, I knew going in that I would most likely enjoy the game. I ended up subbing, and havn't looked back since.
PS if you felt bullied by what Wharg0ul posted, you may want to consider steering clear of forums or even the Internet in general. That was pretty tame. I think you were being a little dramatic.

Well it seems Darkfall is more challenging for some people than other MMORPGs, for example the whiners that want it made easier. Elitest attitude? I've been playing 2 months and have taken Vets in fights, what am I supposed to do? Pander to these guys that are complaining because they can't be arsed to play the game the way it is and think their one month of subscriptions entitles them to have the game changed to suit their tastes? That's alot more elitest than any comment I've made in my opinion!
I like the game, I'm not happy with everything but I don't think it should be changed to suit me or my playstyle and certainly don't go on and on and on flogging a dead horse about it. It is a fact stats make a small difference and that you don't need to grind for 6 months to be competitive in PvP. These guys just don't get it, they need to play something less challenging FOR THEM, maybe that means an FPS, WoW or joining the UFC IRL, I don't know and don't really care!
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. Step off your podium, Darkfall is no more challenging than any other MMO or even FPS. I really despise the fact that DF players try to write other people off with their misplaced elitist attitude.
I'm sorry, but any game that has FFA, full loot unforgiving PvP and no safe zones is a hell of a lot more challenging than other games that don't. Sure, you can try to argue that the FPS combat in Darkfall isn't any more challenging than a target, tab, and click MMO (something I disagree with completely but to each his own), but you simply can't deny that the insanely harsh environment that is in Darkfall is not much more challenging than your typical MMO....
I mean seriously.... it has nothing to do with an "elitist" attitude (and to say there isn't an "elitist" attitude in other games such as WoW is comical), but instead it's about the fact that people that are looking for a more than normal challenging, but highly rewarding game, go to games such as Darkfall.
