Open Beta players are trying to get in but can't because this Saturday 1/16/2010 the server is completely full.
READ:
Hi everyone!
This is really amazing! We have hit the limit of how many players we can fit on the server right now!
This is one of those times where we're both sad, and glad. On the one side, you all enjoy the game so much, we can't squeeze anyone else on to the server. (I can't log in right now either! )
On the other side, we really want to let you all on the server! So, here's what we're working on:
1) We're increasing server capacity. We have new machines coming in to add to the server, and we've put a rush order on them. We're going to bring them online as soon as we can.
2) We're working on software solutions as well. Our development team is working night and day to be able to get as much power as we can from each machine, and we're focusing on increasing capacity, and server stability.
For now, all we can say is, please keep trying. We know it's frustrating. Please keep trying though. You never know when you might be able to get in!
Thank you for your patience, thank you for your support, and thank you for your interest in Star Trek Online!

Not suprising.

Because it's Saturday servers are compeltly full, you got that right.
I've had the game installed for two days now and haven't been able to log in a single time yet because it's always full. I was hoping to play all day today but it's not looking that way.

They rush to get all these new servers, cause well its open beta. When the game goes live, there like crap...we have all these extra servers we dont need.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not at all a hater of this game or anything, I actually think the game looks pretty good and I wanna play...but I think the server is full for 1.) It's saturday, and 2.) It's new, it's Star Trek, and people are intrigued/curious/etc....
So...it's kinda obvious it's gonna be popular for a while, but does it have staying power?...and I doubt those that are playing are the ones who got in right away and felt the game was boring...
PLAYING: NOTHING!!!
PLAYED:FFXI, LotRO, AoC, WAR, DDO, Megaten, Wurm, Rohan, Mabinogi, RoM
WAITING FOR: Dust 514
There is only 1 server, they are not adding more servers just increasing the 1 server they have.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

And if we knew how many players are playing this would actually mean something.
Popularity really has nothing to do with it. It's open beta, what most view as a free trial. People will play anything, if it's free. Now if this continues a few weeks after launch that's a different story. However, given the state of the MMO community and their distaste for just about anything that releases, how likely is that?

Most companies do not own the servers they run on. They lease them which allows for quick changes. It will be interesting to see how the one server set up works for STO.
I wonder what the population number is when full?
Good for you Cryptic! I'm glad the game is drawing this much attention.
I know I'm having fun. (when I can get on. : ) )

QFE. I finally decided to buck down and use my beta key. Downloading right now from Fileplanet.

They will only have one server at launch, adding more machines either way will benefit at launch. Later on they can use those machines somewhere else in the company. Now if they actually added more servers your point would stand, that would be idiotic IMO, they know as well as everyone else, they won't need it a few weeks after launch.

I really enjoyed the game,so much so I got the lifetime account(honest I always said I would never buy 1 of them for any game).
I have decided I will not play much if at all until the head start(1 space on the server for someone else I guess :P).
Really looking forward to get going, just using the time in between to learn more about different aspects of the game in the forums.

yes yes yes, the server is full because its not popular just free....
not!
You are probably too young to be a Star Trek fan, but there are a lot of old guys like me that are.
Popular can be a relative term, but yes, this game is popular.

Of course I have to complain, cause I guess I'm just a complainer, but really why hand out a beta key if you don't have the server space for it? I can totally understand a wow scenario where way more people bought your game than you ever expected in your wildest dreams, but this isn't the same scenario. They have 100% complete control of open beta keys. Don't hand them out if you don't have the server capacity for them. This is just elementary stuff, something even the most green of developers should be able to figure out.
OK, that being said, looking forward to trying it out for myself and making my own judgement on the game. Assuming I can actually get in to play. Oh, and thanks mmorpg.com and cryptic for the open beta key!!

This is how every OB goes, when talking about AAA titles of course. Most of the feedback I'm seeing is negative. Popular- "suitable to the majority:adapted to or indicative of the understanding and taste of the majority"
BTW, I really enjoy the game it's fun and different. I'm also not to young to be a trek fan, but I have never been one. I'm just saying it doesn't seem by the overall reaction to be a popular game.

I am still unsure if I will pay or not (17-20$ is a lot for me right now).. wish they only changed $8 or so..honestly how much money do they need to keep this game running.. 8 bucks * (200,000 subs.. just a a number out of my head) 1.6 million a month should be more than enough to keep the game up and running.. oh well. lol.. I think I rambled in a different direction sorry
No need to apologize as that's always been an issue with me as well and why I haven't played more MMORPGS than I have. If I'm going to add another monthly bill to myself, it better be enjoyable.

I was wondering the same thing since I've had the game for two days and have yet to be able to play a single time yet. Why hand out more keys than the servers can handle?

Well It Looks Like STO Is Popular: Server Is Completely FULL
OR
The server is just to small..and only a couple hundred people cap it...

They are stress testing the server and of course if the server can hold lets say 150,000(just a number guys) then if they send out 150,000 keys chances are they will never stress test as of course not everyone plays at the same time.
I agree it does look like they have sent out a bit to much but in the end that is good news for them..though not so good for you guys that want to play.

It's a safe bet to assume the server can handle people in the tens of thousands, possibly more.
