Now I haven't played all the Cryptic games, surely, but here's what I have played:
CoH, CoV, CO, and now STO.
They are all identical in their major flaw: no content. All you do is fight. And you fight the same mobs over and over and over. Ugh.
There's also no loot. Sorry, I know it may be old-school, but I like my loot. More precisely, I like the CHANCE, however small it may be, that any given fight I might get a drop. It's that anticipation that makes mindless mob killing fun. I don't want the Super Asskicking Phaser of Destruction +30, that's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is, if combat is the heart of your game, then dammit, there must be that anticipation upon looting. CoX, CO and STO completely miss this basic MMO need.
I think I'm done with Cryptic games.

You mean like the engine's,shield's and other such things that drop in STO?
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

Yup, pretty much. Although in CoX, you got many different powers that changed how you fought...
I am right now closing in on ship number 3 and so far I have done exactly the same thing each and every fight without any difference form first minute. STO has reached a new level of repetitive in a way that seem like they are aiming for people that do not play MMOs.. or games for that matter.
"This is not a game to be tossed aside lightly.
It should be thrown with great force"
So there is no "loot" in this game at all? or did i misunderstand? I've played CoH/CoV and CO myself, is this game similar to how they did the loot/items in those games? Like won't i be able to loot ship parts, for example, which i may be able to use on my own ship?
And in what way can you customize the ship you fly?
It's just a matter of enjoying the combat itself. If you're just in it for the money, so to speak, then there's a good chance you're just ignoring what the game mechanics are about. If the combat doesn't satisfy you, then it's simply not your kind of game. I enjoyed CoH for like three years, and while I was certainly burnt out on it by the end, so much I found Champions completely and utterly boring, it was a hell of a long time for a game that many people hated for its purported 'shallowness' (and there's people going at five years already). You can't treat these games like a hardcore RPG; it's more like an FPS where, even after months and months of doing the exact same thing (killing people in a small diversity of settings) you still find yourself booting it up every now and then to have a blast, on your own or with friends. It's all about the game mechanic as well as character development and planning, and not so much about the worlds themselves and activities in the stories and so on.
Now, I'm not saying this is better or worse than whatever, it's just what it is. If you're the right kind of player, you will "get" Cryptic's games... it's really that simple. I think they really know how to make a game, but they haven't reached that balanced point at which their worlds and the activities within them are as good and fun as their combat mechanics. I think I've rarely read someone complain against CoH's combat or CO's. I've already seen a couple about STO, but then again I haven't tried it, so I can't speak for myself in that regard. I suppose Cryptic are kinda repeating themselves by now in a lot of things, but we'll see how it goes in some months from now.
Yes there are loot drops such as shield's,phaser's,torpedo's etc etc.
Yes you can customize your ships, even with your very 1st ship you have a lot of choices on how your ship will look.

IMO this is exactly my proublem with STO. I'v played alot of closed beta and a decent amount of open beta. Once the "zomg it is star trek" feeling wore off I was finding that if I played for more then 1 or 2 hours a day I would get bored. I'm still on the fence as to if I'll get the game or not. I can see myself loging in for maybe 4 hours a week and playing it in 45min chunks but I dont see myself doing what I did with WoW (and currently LotRO), that is loging on ass soon as I could and playing until I was ready to pass out and then still wanting to keep playing but forcing myself to go to bed.
I think STO will be fun if I only play it a few hours a week like I do with FPS games, however I am wondering if those few hours is enough to justify $15 a month sub.
Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.

Sorry for stealing the thread a bit, but what kind of customization are we talking about? Do you see the ship alter it's appearance? Or are it mainly stats that get "customized"?
I'm done with Cryptic also. They should learn to not release unfinished games.
Yes, I too see this as certainly the central financial question. Is it worth 15 dollars a month? People compare it to an FPS, but those don't have monthly fees. It's a bit like Guild Wars in the instances and so forth...but again, no monthly fee there. I really don't see how one can justify spending 15 bucks every month (or even 10) on an MMO that is so limited, and this is to say nothing of how buggy it seems considering it is coming out in just two weeks (there's only so much that can be done in so short a time).

Yes you do see it change appearance quite a bit,and quite a few options so you wont see the same ship everywhere
