Of course I have to complain, cause I guess I'm just a complainer, but really why hand out a beta key if you don't have the server space for it? I can totally understand a wow scenario where way more people bought your game than you ever expected in your wildest dreams, but this isn't the same scenario. They have 100% complete control of open beta keys. Don't hand them out if you don't have the server capacity for them. This is just elementary stuff, something even the most green of developers should be able to figure out.
OK, that being said, looking forward to trying it out for myself and making my own judgement on the game. Assuming I can actually get in to play. Oh, and thanks mmorpg.com and cryptic for the open beta key!!
I was wondering the same thing since I've had the game for two days and have yet to be able to play a single time yet. Why hand out more keys than the servers can handle?
They are stress testing the server and of course if the server can hold lets say 150,000(just a number guys) then if they send out 150,000 keys chances are they will never stress test as of course not everyone plays at the same time.
I agree it does look like they have sent out a bit to much but in the end that is good news for them..though not so good for you guys that want to play.
Good point but you're right it sucks for me lol.

Well It Looks Like STO Is Popular: Server Is Completely FULL
OR
The server is just to small..and only a couple hundred people cap it...
It's a safe bet to assume the server can handle people in the tens of thousands, possibly more.
Yeah, these are the servers that used to be for Champions Online, and at one point were running tens of thousands concurrent users. We felt the pinch when they took the servers from CO, too, so unless those were being returned to a lessor then the capacity for STO should be in the tens of thousands.
Yesterday MMORPG.com started offering 5000 open beta keys yesterday afternoon there were still over 4500. when I looked a few minutes ago there were only 116 and that may be almost gone by now.
Just means the goldsellers and exploiters wanted a preview.
Ya know, I been watching and listening to a lot of pod casts about STO and not to mention some of the auctions that I have seen for regular star trek stuff and it actually came to as to one of the reasons this game is going to have a lot of subscribers. Normally you think of an MMO in the US as mostly US people, but we also know other countries play here to, but one thing that I have noticed when it comes to Star Trek, The UK has as big a following, if not more, than the US has for it. I suspect that we are going to have just as many UK subscribers as we are US subscribers for this game. If you have seen any of the auctions for star trek memorabilia, People from the UK seemed to be the ones that won a majority of them. When listening to pod casts for STO, a majority of the callers they have had have also been UK people. So I suspect that is going to be huge for STO when it comes to shear numbers of people playing.
As stated previously , the majority are off on Saturdays. Notice how servers weren't full during the week but that could be attributed to the 30 hour download they made for their fans.

When you think of an mmo you think of only US players, also you only mention UK and US players,it scare's me how shallow your thought's are.even the Star Trek comments amaze me..you do know there are more than 2 countries in the world and mmo's are released in a big majority of them, also anyone care to hazard a guess at how many language's Star Trek is translated to.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
Well I am installing the client right now but I know that I will never spend any money on STO no matter what. Not becuase how the game is but because the way Atari/Cryptic is scamming their players. So being popular in open beta doesnt mean much. And CO had alot more positive buzz before release than STO has and look what happened to CO...

Shallow? No I dont think so. Star Trek has a following in every country but from what I have seen in interviews and tv shows and auctions, its to biggest followings are the US and UK. That is why I am saying that I think this game is going to be just as big a hit in the UK as it will be in the US. Manny MMOs usually have seperate servers for time zones and even countries, that is another reason why I stated that when I think of US mmos that I think of mostly US people playing on them. I know thats far from the truth because many times I have ended up on servers that were over run with asian guilds. DAOC was the worst for me on that because the asian guilds would always take all the forts in the early morning and when we would get back in the game in evening, we then had to fight the US folks trying to get them back all while during prime time.
I guess what you didn't understand was that I was talking about an mmo that is only released in the US. It has nothing to do with MMO's being released in other countries.
This server debacle is not a indicator of popularity, but it does show how poor Cryptic is at planning. The numbers were there for them to anticipate how much server capacity was needed on a weekend.

Come one mate, think outside the box.
It is open beta and they are getting more people than the server can hold, they already said they are working on it(the point of a stress test)and everyone knows come release this will not be so(wait for troll attack on numbers).
There will be no need for a queue on release as the server will have been upgraded to handle the amount(again wait for obvious troll attack on the numbers)

No it wouldn't blow my mind, Like I said, I know that countries everywhere are playing MMO's. You want titles. Lets see, EQ, EQ2, Vanguard, SWG, DAOC, Oh lts not forget STO and the list goes on. These are US mmo's, meaning they are made in the US and the servers are in the US. It doesn't mean other countries don't play on them, Many mmo's put servers into other countries. I believe DAOC ended up putting some in other countries not long after its start. I have played with folks on US servers from all around the world, but if the mmo has not specifically added servers to other countries, it would be a US only release. It doesn't mean they are blocking other countries from getting in, it just means it was released in the US. I know Darkspace which is not really an MMO does in fact block a few countries from being able to play simply due to all the credit card fraud they were getting from those countries. Seriously though, Why are you yanking my chain because of my original statement? All I was saying is that I think the two biggest star trek fan countries was going to be playing this game and that the UK folks may actually outnumber the US folks in wanting to play this game.
Impressive, no queue system, just keep randomly attempting to get in.

I just highlighted the basic issue as I'm used to seeing some system in place for these situations. In Entropia Universe there's no queue but at least you get offered to be teleported to an area that is not full. In Guild Wars I don't remember seeing ever seeing their limits.
It's impossible to be 100% sure on the player base after release, but during beta they have strict control of how many beta keys should be distributed.
A queue system would at least provide a basic organization if these situations ever happen again (keep hitting the connect button is simple chaos), considering the clustered server type (I'm guessing each server hosts X assigned instances) this shouldn't happen in every area so this is just an extreme situation caused by everyone being at federation space by beta limitation, but this also means there can be unlucky times an area with not so many assigned servers from the cluster gets too much traffic after release.
Fair enough,I just think you should open the box a bit...also were do you think 1 of the more popular mmo's in the last 6 or 7 years is based and runs from?
EDIT-I do not mean WoW!
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

I am going to assume you mean Eve, as WoW IS based from the US. There are very few AAA titles that are made outside of the US. it doesn't mean there aren't a lot of good MMO's out there, as I have played many from other countries, but there are very few AAA titles that are outside of the US. look at Aion, I would consider it a AAA title and it is an import to the US. All I am saying about STO is that I think the biggest contributors to the game is going to come from the US and UK. Im sure there are going to be plenty of folks from all around the world, but I think those two countries are going to be the biggest part of the playerbase.
Fair enough,I just think you should open the box a bit...also were do you think 1 of the more popular mmo's in the last 6 or 7 years is based and runs from? EDIT-I do not mean WoW!
So many choices, I have no idea where do you want to get to open the box. It's just a beta anyway, I bet we'll be facing many more issues, which is good to happen in beta as they can at least start developing a fix before release, though I probably don't want to see "Aionesque" release week queues of 2 or more hours :P
It's funny watching people try to downplay the clearly large number of people who are interested in playing the game.
I agree. I fully expect that STO will surpass many MMOs that are out on the market right now and the great thing about this title is the shear amount of stuff they can actually do it because of the super rich history that is Star Trek.
Almost every MMORPG that comes out has initial interest. It looks like STO is playing it safe and not releasing three or four servers right off the bat. As far as this surge of players for an open beta being a sign of popularity, I'm not sure. I know many people who sign up for beta invites for every game that has one.
The popularity check comes about six months after release. Let me know then.

Sorry but I still do not think you have an idea of what you are talking about, yes the US bring a lot of people to the table but I would say if you ask any dev/publisher if they would rather have the UK base or "the rest of Europe" they would not have to think.
Why do you think that in Europe the French and German's get there own servers?in time the Spanish will get theres..also in Europe we always watch to see were the Spanish(pre-server) and Russians will go so we will not join there server as they take it over.I would wager cash that the Nordic countries have the same if not more than the UK,never mind the rest of Europe.
Like I said ..think outside of the box.

And STO will never have more than 1 server because that is how their server structure is setup. Now, it doesn't mean they might not put one into another country, but their server structure is basically very similar to Eve. 1 server, lots of clusters.

Ahh, I see where the problem is now. Maybe I should have used Europe instead of UK. I was really meaning all of Europe. Sorry, I kinda lump all of Europe into the UK bracket when I shouldn't.

It's funny watching people try to downplay the clearly large number of people who are interested in playing the game.

So many choices, I have no idea where do you want to get to open the box. It's just a beta anyway, I bet we'll be facing many more issues, which is good to happen in beta as they can at least start developing a fix before release, though I probably don't want to see "Aionesque" release week queues of 2 or more hours :P
Its more funny watching people try to up-play that number of people because its NEW, give it a few months to see the true intrest level.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
Now Playing: N/A
Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
