this is the SAME crap they did with champions online. they get everyone they can to get lifetime subs and then they act like they are being so generous by extending the chance to get lifetimes. get everyone riled up and then throw it back out there and grab some more money.
I might consider it if they offer it a year down the road.. but not right now. I have one regular sub, Aion, and one lifetime Sub LOTRO and that's all I need at this time.
Sounds like a great idea from a business standpoint. Especially for making the offer end prior to launch date so that you guarantee a subscription before the "try before you buy" option is available.
I haven't been following STO as closely as some of you all but I'd be concerned about how they plan on integrating any lore into the game for the Borg. Unless they designate the Borg playable species to be a pvp-centric choice without a lore because they have separated from the collective somehow.
I would like to see these kind of offers more often actually, its a way to distinguish yourself from others - not going to pay 220$ for that in this game but definitely interesting.
At least Hellgate London had a single player life time subscribers could fall back on. I really enjoy STO alot but it would be tragic if the the game should have to shut down for any reason.
I had high hopes for this company after what they did with CoH. Not that I liked the mission system but the level of customization was very appealing. After looking at Champions and now this, I wouldn't look forward to any game they put out. This genre is going to shit, WoW selling in game items (no, i don't give a shit if it's fluff ... some ppl like to collect things in game ... now you make them pay more?) and a bunch of other companies doing similar things. I'm giving these companies the middle finger personally, too bad others don't.
Amen to this.
This is all the fault of players who buy into these 'deals'.

well i hate it when companies start to do "lifetime subscription packages" cos it just means that the game developer and publisher aren't convinced in what they have done and don't know whether it will last past 2 years, because that is essentially what the package is for.
If you're a trekkie then people will get it, otherwise i wouldn't bother as i can see them making Borg playable in a expansion at a later date is my guess. Oh and has anyone played the beta yet, im not impressed with it but thats just my opinion.
I am into Star Trek, it's my second best Sci-Fi Fix next to Star Wars, played the game STO in beta, but sorry Fallen Earth is what got that MMORPG fibe for me, and since I love Star Trek and MMORPG I simply never felt that from STO. But that's not saying the game isn't good, just saying it didn't give me that spark to play it. Which is a shame with a IP like that and the "fan" I am of that IP.
But will admit as said before in other topics my take on a MMORPG is very different from what Cryptic takes seems to be, I also love superheroes, yet neither CoH/V or Champions gave me a fibe for wanting to play them.
Lifetime subs, something that will NEVER atract me of doing so, not even for the game I might really like, I mean who knows what happens to the game, who knows what happens in rl, 1month sub at a time for me regardless how much I might love playing game X. If a game is good I keep resubbing to it, if not I simply quite, unfortunaly I must say I will not be geting STO regardless my love for it's IP, bit of a shame really, but then never had high hopes for it anyway since it's made by a company with another take on MMORPG that what suites my playstyle in MMORPG's.
Anyone who pays $240.00 for a lifetime sub should be thrown out of mmo gaming forever. It isn't about the money, it is more about the principle. This just opens the doors to more ways the developers can sink their hands into your wallet. I highly doubt anyone who plays STO and buys a lifetime subscription will get their money's worth. After 6 months I bet they won't be even playing STO.
Normally, someone would consider a lifetime sub after playing for at least 2 months and having that "This is my game!" feeling.
This offer is just not compatible with that. It looks like a fast way to grab some extra bucks.
so far i have seen 3 lifetime sub offers and only one of them ever offered it post launch. That game was Lotro and it only offered it on the anniversary of the launch.

That's the honest and honourable way to do it. Offer it after people know what the game is like.

Especially the "lifetime subs are a scam to get money because the devs have no faith in their product". Really? That's the best you could come up with? That's entirely counter to the whole point behind MMOs. "Okay guys, I know we just spent years of our lives and millions of dollars making this game, and we have massive contracts with giants like CBS Studios, and it's two weeks before our game launches, but oops, we don't think our game will do any good, so lets scam the players and take the money and run, I'm sure nothing bad could happen to us because of it". That just doesn't happen.
A lifetime sub is the same as a 3-month or 6-month sub, except that you commit for a longer period so you get a better reward. Also note that they started with only offering it to people who preordered and thus have had a chance to play the game. The lifetime is still available after launch, you just don't get the bonus for preordering and taking the offer before launch.
As far as the MMO genre going "down the tubes", it sounds like people are just trying to resist change. Genre's evolve. If you can't take where the genre is going, you might want to find a new one.

this deal is exhorbadent and desperate. they might as well just come out say, "the game is critically flawed, please donate with abandon to save our project"
whats next? never ending invincable characters if you pay them $1000?
i was excited before, but this move sadly confesses the designer lack of confidence.
buy this game for same reason you'd buy a box of limited time only Star Trek breakfast cereal. otherwise, donate to Haiti, or christ get an extra pizza for each week for a year, for better value.

Ok 1st off Lotro offered the lifetime sub from day 1,not a year later.
2nd With STO you can also buy a lifetime membership after release and at anytime, this was posted on this site and the official forums yesterday, though as it was not something the trolls could cling to it was generally ignored.
Get the facts and then post.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

The FACT is that with the LotrO offer you didnt have to get lifetime before launch. If you pre-oredered/founder you could wait as long as you wanted after launch to activate lifetime offer. I know people who played LotrO for 1 year before activating their founder deal for lidetime sub, I waited the free 45 days from the box untill I decided to get lifetime. So there is a HUGE difference between how LotrO and STO handles it.
+the LotrO offer didnt unlock any extra race you coudlnt get any other way... Its like resticting hobbits to people who pay lifetime before launch.
Get the facts and then post.
If WoW = The Beatles and WAR = Led Zeppelin Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

At a higher cost, and without the premium. Why?
Why does Cryptic want people buying it before release?

Ahahaha hilarious! How much more obvious do they have to make it?
Give me liberty or give me lasers
It's quite a gamble. But imagine you pay 240$ and the game turns out well. After 1 year and 4 months (240$/15$=16 months) you play for free.

I don't think we are discussing the real problem here...
How on earth does it make sense to have a player character that is a Borg? A Borg with a personality?
