Is it no longer cheaper to build your own rig??

SgtFrogSgtFrog Member Posts: 5,001

3 years ago I built my computer for £1300 which saved me about £500 for doing it myself

Anyway my rig is getting a little old so I have been thinking of building a new one, the sum total of my parts is £1400 on ebuyer.com...anyway I was checking some Custom Build PC sites out there and I was surprised that getting someone to build the exact same pc was about the same price as buying all the parts and putting it together..Give or take £50 O_O.

When did they get so cheap? !

Kinda sucks, i was always happy saving money by putting together a pc myself, now it jsut feels like too much effort >.>

Are you sure it's the exact same PC? All the exact same parts? Same brand and model video card, motherboard, power supply, etc.?

But yeah, I imagine the margins on custom built PCs have gotten pretty slim compared to the old days. They can get volume discounts on parts, where you have to pay retail price. And where are they putting them together at?

Its definitely cheaper to build your own system, i think you probably need to shop around, rather than rely on ebuyer, personally i wouldnt touch them. The only advantage of prebuilt systems imo, is that they come with software already installed, and usually have at least  a 1 year warranty. But if your confident enough of your ability to assemble a system, and its not that hard really, then buy the components yourself.

     I agree with Phry

    I'm working on putting together a i7 920 pc.

So far its around $880 for my cheapest..if i add a after market fan/heatsink and 2 extra 120 fans unless the one in my current pc is a 120m it will be $930 for it.

Building is better, except you having to fix problems, and trouble shooting, but its fun..

100% the same, only difference is that the ATI GPU in my build is by sapphire and the one from the website was gigabyte

Iv have built systems before many times because it’s always been so much cheaper, but now there seems to be no point....I do enjoy building my own system...cabling is a pain for me though :P I must hide it all.

I dunno mate it really depends on where you buy from and what the cut the reseller takes for themselves. If business was tough that % would of increased. Ebuyer might not be the best around anymore. That customer builder is cutting out the middleman, and passing the benefit on when usually the reseller is the out that cuts out the middleman.

Used to be like that when I was back home in England. I guess may have changed like you point out. Here is N.America now (so much more cheaper, obviously) but still better to build your own.

Whats a retail part?  I was buy OEM parts.  Who cares if it doesn't have some box for it?  If you are in England you are fresh out of luck on pricing due to all the shit that's tacked on over there.  VAT is the main culprit on why its cheaper to get it pre-built.  Still buying from some of the cheaper PC assemblers, you should know how to build your own machine.  Often times they forget to do something.

    you try
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/
    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/
    http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/

At least in the US every prebuilt computer I've seen costs a hefty sum more than I could build it myself for. But that's using newegg/zipzoomfly prices. Using a walk in retailer to buy parts, even oem, inflates costs enough to make it the same price as buying a prebuilt.

All the UK prices I've seen on components are pretty high even disregarding VAT, no idea how prebuilts over there compare.

For a high end computer, you save more by building it yourself.

The lower you go from top of the line, however, the more other OEMs are feeling the need to get rid of old stock, so they drop prices farther than you can ever find them in a retail environment.

    Now with 57.3% more flames!

I built my computer, and It was a lot cheaper. that was about 4 years ago. about a year after, I upgraded the graphics card and motherboard, for about 300 bucks. It was pretty high end at the time. about a year later, I upgraded just the processor, for an awesome deal on newegg. I upgraded the RAM, motherboard and power supply recently, making it a whole new machine from when it was built and it's still amazingly high end, despite the fact I still have a case from like 2 years before I even got this one. Anyway, my point is, with a custom, you don't have to toss it to upgrade. You can ease into it. You can with a stock machine, but it's a bit more costly still, and if you've never had the experiance, you may have to hire someone to do it. Even if it's not cheaper anymore, and as long as it's not overpriced, I like to know what's in there, and how it works.
