Do MMORPGs still exist that micromanage all skills like AC or UO?

Hey all, been playing MMROPGs for a looooong time.  Took a break since the debut of WoW.  It was an okay game, but it introduced something that I was not a fan of... simplified skills systems.

Recently, I've been trying some of the new MMOGs out there, and it seems like everyone has copied WoW's system of skills.  I first saw this in Asheron's Call 2.  Do ANY MMOGs these days go old school and allow you to level almost all your skill sets?  Or are you forced to upgrade in a pre-arranged system?   I loved playing games like Asheron's Call and using my XP to upgrade anything I wanted from something as inane as cooking or jumping skills.  Does this type of system still exist in the new MMORPGS?  If so, could you recommend the game?   Because I'm not fond of many of the new MMORPGs I've played.

Muchas gracias.

You got Ryzom which you can level any and all skills.

    1. Darkfall has tons of differnet skills

    2. Fallen Earth has skills although it feels more restrictive than AC, UO, Darkfall to me.

Anarchy Online, although currently has dated graphics, however a AoC Conversion of the engine has been in development... coming soon (tm).

But the game has all skills available via skill points that you can use while you level up, my favorite game of all time I find myself revisiting at least once or twice a year.

Ryzom really is basically the last game left like that. SWG, was up until 05 when a class based system replaced the skill based. You can always still play UO or AC, I know, they're to old for most.

Well Games like Darkfall and Mortal Online allow you to train specific skills whenever you want. Ryzom allows you to train all skills I think...I can't think of any others off the top of my head...I'm sure there are a bunch more, too.

Holy cow!  Are you serious!?  MMORPGs have gotten awful lame then, IMO.  Don't people nowadays get bored if all their skillsets are "pre-ordained" by developers?  I loved being able to have a character that was nothing similar to anyone on the server.  I lied about the 5 years, I did play LOTR Online for a few days since a friend of mine had a few charity accounts, but I laughed at that game when I designed a character and it automatically labeled my character a "tank" or such.... OMG, MMORPGs have been simplified!!!  Thanks for the suggestions folks.  I'll try some of these few games left that seem to appreciate what MMORPGs used to be about.

It's true those games are skill based but that's not really the selling point behind them. Be sure to warn those are FFA PVP full loot games, yes UO was this type of game pre-tr however the op really didn't say he was looking for that.

Yep I miss games where it was just as important to know how to build a character, as it was to know how to play it. Where loot didn't mean squat outside of giving you a dot or minor stat boost.

MMOs have gotten lame is an understatement. If you come back to the loop of the MMO world you will see what i mean. There are a few and i do mean a few Good and decent MMOs out there you just gotta look.

FFXI uses skills for everything. You are totally useless unless your skills are raised up.So you have choices of several weapons but if you change to a weapon you have never used, you will be very lucky to get a hit in.

The same for spells, your spells will miss a lot ,your enfeebs won't stick, again like weapons, you will be totally useless with low skills.Everyone has skills in the game,Ninja has their set of skills,Summoners,Mages,Melee everyone. Not only does the game use skills but it uses elemental facts like weather, resistances, and certain weapons do better on certain mobs, witch is the resistance part.

That is what makes FFXI combat system so great, not only do you have a sub class and a skill system but it also uses every other aspect that other games use,so it misses nothing.I also highly doubt there is any game that comes as close to ffxi for having VERY complicated formulas, both normal and weapon skills. They do not use  straight up easy to figure formulas, they use curves, ranges, the skills,level,att/def/STR/STA ect ect tons of things are factored in.

I thought a lot of games would pick up on FFXI's amazing start,it still has lots of room for improvement, instead what i have seen is more simplistic cheap designs, developers are becoming real lazy.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

It is not exactly what the OP is describing, but the character building in Champions Online is quite complex.  A game similar to WoW, but without classes "tank", "healer", "CC", instead you can take any powers you want on any character.   Of course there are lots of synergies, which make it possible to make super combinations, with new ones being discovered all the time: currently the situation in competitive PvP is that the "best builds" are still being improved upon.

Where loot didn't mean squat outside of giving you a dot or minor stat boost.

Haha that explains those kind of items being in CO, which were widely complained about!  They are "pointless", etc...

It's funny, mainstreamers don't like the game because it is too "hard" = complicated, and hardcore mmo players ignored the game for obvious reasons...although in many ways it was targeted at them (classless open build system)!

Sadly most games these days have simplified character classes/professions, with often limited if indistinguishable characteristics, picking out those few good MMO's is hard, you might want to have a look at Fallen Earth, but there are others.

Um... AC2 beta'd and released before WoW but I get your point and agree AC was the bees knees

EVE and Runescape also have that system, i also believe have and hearth has it.

  • VengeSunsoarVengeSunsoar Member EpicPosts: 6,601

Istaria, while being level and class based, allows you to train every single class and keep the skill.  So effectively you can train every single skill.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.
  • Thanks again for the suggestions.  Fallen Earth looks nice.  Is it still a good game for newbs?  Is it dominated by high levels who will grief me from the start? LOL   Thanks for all the suggestions but for those suggesting games made years and years ago, frankly.... I'd rather just pick up with Ultima Online or Asheron's Call again.  I'm looking for new games.  I like the post-apocalyptic feel of Fallen Earth and its relatively new release date.  Don't want to be the only newb on the server. LOL

In games without any progression constraints, teamplay is less interesting because everyone ends up being an uninteresting hybrid (they kinda tank, kinda cast, kinda heal, etc)

Constraints provide the limitations necessary to make decisionmaking interesting.  Tight progression constraints (like Classes) result in some of the most interesting mid-battle decisionmaking, even if they might have slightly less interesting pre-battle decisionmaking.

The more freeform and sandbox a game is, the less it's a game and the more it's simply a freeform activity.  Freeform activities don't tug at the same type of motivation strings as games -- at least not for the majority of people.

I suppose.  But I remember in the days of these sandbox games, people eventually did morph into specialized classes with some of their toons.  They just didn't have to be told by developers which direction to go.

I dont want to persuade NOT to try Darkfall but you did mention something about not wanting to be griefed by more more experienced players at starter areas and Darkfall is notorious for that and the fact that currently there isnt a free trial for it.   However, after reading your responses I think Fallen Earth is more suited to your style.  And with Fallen Earth there is a free trial and if you decide to upgrade to retail the game only costs $40 from Icarus's online store.  www.fallenearth.com/  Youll find the link to the free trial at their website.  Otherwise, if you decide to try Darkfall you'll be shelling out $50 without having played it yet.  Anyways, good luck on what ever decision you make.

The most misused word on the internet:

    loose

adjective, looser, loosest, adverb, verb loosed, loosing.
    –adjective
    1. free or released from fastening or attachment: a loose end.
    2. free from anything that binds or restrains; unfettered

The word you are looking for is L-O-S-E. YOu can NOT loose a game.

I'm betting he will dislike both fallen earth and darkfall. His best bet is a free shard offering the UO era he enjoyed. I do a pre ren shard some do ninja gaiden uo...whatever you like.

Edit- Dude I hope you didn't buy darkfall without check their forums...that alone will turn the worst WoW forum junky off.

Have to agree about Darkfall, not a game i can particularly recommend, with any luck he'll pick up on the problems there and give it a miss.  Im a great believer of using free trials to check a game out before buying, most MMO's have them, the better ones at least, and always recommend people try games before buying, it can ease the pain on your wallet by avoiding making bad purchases.
