Ah, I've been misinformed. Thank you for clearing it up. I think this game will become widespread over time, then.
Guild Wars is strict PvP, but in my opinion, it's not done very well. As for GW doing the monthly expansion, sooner or later they will be 'buff packs' that greatly increase the potential of the expansion wielder. Why? Because poeple make games to make money, and people pay money to get the advantage, no matter how big or small. Why do you think all these stupid In-Game Item auctions are so popular? Because people do what it takes to have the upperhand.
I'm going with DnL.
Edit: And wouldn't you know it, MMORPG.com has an add for ige.com, a site that sells player accounts, in-game items, and in-game money. Yay....that's why I hardly come here.

There will never be any 'buff packs'. ArenaNet will make money by selling a fun, balanced, competitive game, and keeping their costs low.
They will continue to make money if, and only if, enough people are sufficiently impressed with the original that they want to see the expansion chapters.
You will never be able to buy an advantage in the game, even if you purchase a dozen accounts with maxed out characters and gear on IGE.
as it has already been mentioned Guild Wars will be more instant fun Diablo style (Heck it's even being run by former Blizzard employees with Areana Net)
DnL will require more dedication obviously. Both look like good games to me and will probably try out both.
I find it rather hard to compare these two games! GW is not even MMORPG!...but even though it's not fair to GW to be compare with a game of a much superior genre then I'll vote anyway! GO Dark and Light!

Where do people get this? They arent going to be releasing expansions anymore than any other major MMORPG, as in 2 to 3 per year. And what makes you think you cant play if you dont get the expanison? Thats just BS, you can still play you just wont get the benefits of having the expansion.
One should say that unless you buy the expansion you will become bored really fast.
How long do you think it will take for players to go through every single instanced quest in the game? A month? Then what? So then you wait for the expansion several months away.
Guild Wars is not a game you can "get into". It will be a good secondary game to the more persistent online games though.

Its true that their profit will come from selling expansions. But you are wrong when you said, you cannot play without thoseYou can play forever without purchasing a single expansion. You can purchase one expansion but not purchase the other and vice versa. Pretty much ArenaNet is confident on their product that players will continue to support GW by buying their expansions.
Another thing, not buying an expansion pack will not put you to a disadvantage in pvp. You do not need to buy them to remain competitive. The focus of the game is skills and how well you execute them. There are no uber skills. The new skills included in the expansion pack will only increase the amount of builds/strategies you can form.
Will I remain competitive if I do not buy the expansion packs? Will I be able to compete with and against others if I have only some of the Guild Wars chapters?
Yes. Purchasing the newer chapters of Guild Wars will not make you strictly more powerful. You will have access to many more strategic options, due to the expanding nature of the skills, abilities, items and professions that you enjoy with each chapter. It would be similar to building a deck in Magic: The Gathering: The more cards you own, the more different playing decks that you can choose from to use in the game. When you buy the chapters of Guild Wars, you will acquire a larger collection of skills and abilities from which to build your skill set, but you will not gain more power. So if you purchase a chapter and your friend does not, you will still be able to play competitively against and with one another.
Playing now: Cities: Skyline / Ori and the Blind Forest / Banished

The term "prediction" was chosen carefully, primarily because I have no evidence to support my claim. I have only my deep-seated belief that expansions will bring new elements to the game that will advance character options in a way that those without the expansions will be at a disadvantage.
This is mostly based upon over a decade of experience in playing CRPGs and MMORPGs. The RPG mechanic is all about character advancement, and if expansions are released that do not provide more ways for a player to explore the gaming mechanics through their character it is likely to rouse ire. Players expect to get better as time passes, that's what the RPG mechanic promises and implies.
Hence, the idea that expansions will come to the market without adding any quality to the level of play of the character seems to me to be a terrible decision. But since I recognize that I do not know this to be true, since I do not have any empirical evidence to support it (in that the game is not released and there are no announced expansions) I am perfectly willing to state that I am only predicting this to be the case.

Have fun playing DnL.
As a RPG-er there's not much contest, DnL is designed much more for my play style but I wish GW well with there different marketing model.
