2 games in 1?

gothagotha Member UncommonPosts: 1,074

this is just wild speculation but from looking at the videos i am guessing this is two games in 1.  1 More standard MMO with semi real time combat.  The other more of a arcade fighter game.  I am guessing is might be how they achieve a lot of insanity without worrying about network lag.

A lot of those pretty levels we are seeing remind me more of fight arenas then level zones.

But we also see a lot of areas,  look a tad less spectacular,  and they look like more stand MMO leveling.  Maybe they do the c9 thing and are instanced.  Be interesting to see how they set this game up.

it's not real-time combat but it will be fast paced. it's not the combat like tera online, mabinogi heroes, continent of the ninth, dragon nest & etc.. also tera online will be more open-world compared to all of these and I think B&S will be more instanced (this is what I assume from the interviews).

I've really dissected the video (frame by frame). I don't think any of what we see is "fighting arenas". The game engine makes wide use of Depth of Field blurring and a Bloom Filter for distant objects, which in these clips can understandably give a visual impression similar to some of the current Console Fighting Game settings.

It looks like open world to me and the inclusion of fast mounts as part of the core design, rather than for future content, would seem to suggest a world big enough to accommodate them.

The animations are reminiscent of what we see in some fighting games and it's possible there might be some combo system, but I'd imagine that the controls and interface will still be very similar to other MMORPGs.

In the final few minutes of the video, interspersed with game play footage, seems to be some story elements, including a few cuts that I would assume are from cut scenes. (I'd be shocked if the character being chased by the large creature down a valley and over a bridge was free play, rather than a cut scene. It all speculation though).

BTW, the first couple times through, I thought it was all solo or one on one PvP, but there are a few very short shots interspersed in the video that show two or three players attacking mobs together. The combat seems just as dynamic there, with reactive animations as well, as in the 1 vs. 1 scenes. So, it appears they have managed to introduce dynamic reactions to being hit by weapons and skills with out resorting to the 1 vs. 1 "Locked on" combat approach that Funcom had designed for AoC, before abandoning it due to negative early tester feedback and bug issues.

Oh and one last thing from taking time to go over the video frame by frame, the animations are just incredible. A lot of detail is lost in the quickness of the actions. I think what Aion did in setting a new bar in Avatar customization, B&S will do for MMORPG animation. Poorly animated MMORPGs will just not be viable any longer once people experience what good animation can really provide.

Nice thanks  Sounds more correct then my quick viewings.

just one correction.  Aion did not set any customization bar.  COX did that  a long time ago.

CoX was a step in the right direction, but I actually returned to CoX for a little free time for previous subscribers about a month before entering Aion beta and Aion's avatar creation is leaps and bounds beyond CoX. Nothing I'm aware of currently on the market can combine the wealth of options with the quality of the output that Aion offers in this regard.

AoC had a lot of sliders, yet the characters of the same race/sex still all looked basically the same. In Aion, characters all look distinctive, with out relying on armor or hair style/color to be the primary distinguishing factor.

I wish there were more distinctive armor designs in Aion, but I have to give NCSoft huge kudos for allowing such a wide range of body types, shapes and heights, while somehow managing to accommodate them all with very, very few visual issues or clipping problems (and good support for mixing and matching of pieces).
