ever known a laucnh or head start to go 100% smooth?
if you really stressed over this, maybe you should turn off your computer and go outside and get some fresh air
I have to work in an hour, and all of tomorrow, and Sunday. The entire headstart is screwed up for me.
you could always call in sick
Too late for today, I'm considering it tomorrow. :P
dont forget to pretend you dont feel well as you work tonight =p
WoW, Warhammer, AoC, christ i could go on.....they all had problems at launch, i can't think of any mmorpg except LOTRO which had anything but a rocky beginning.

How did Turbine manage that, one wonders. They did have a lot of people playing as well.
Server Status: Undergoing Maintenance Yes it was tested during Beta, Except beta had 100 this day, 100 that day, etc etc
this has like 40.50k people smashing it for headstart you cant stress test that.
as an IT admin I know this, I have seen software perform brilliant in beta, soon as it goes live it fails due to demand, it happens
QQ a river, build a bridge and get over it
Except, you CAN stress test games with automated load scripts. As a game developer I know this. It's a pretty simple concept, will easily allow for testing 40k+ concurrent and was most likely part of Cryptic's test path. Who knows what the actual glitch is, but I find it hard to believe that they didn't test the anticipated load and were clueless about how many pre-orders they sold. My guess is this has something to do with the last-minute hardware upgrades they did out of OB, and is causing the game to drop players out, creating an unexpected load on the login server.
I admit I don't understand the complexities...but how does the login server crashing kick me out of game in the middle of a mission with a failed to authenticate message? Why would it try to authenticate me while in game? Is that a part of cheat protection or something?

so what do you propose to solve it? buy more account servers JUST for launch, that will be used probably just this once due to high influx?
wow you really dont seem to understand server infrastructure and demands
It's much cooler to be able to use the word FAIL, as it would seem anyway.
This has nothing to do with a game being ready, it has everything to do with technology, and the limits of. When you have about 50k people trying to use a login server you're going to get overload, no matter what. Sure they could add more machines or even more servers, why? They will be unneeded in three months time, if they added more servers they would need to merge at that point.
Games that have been live for years, still get this kind of influx on major patch days (login crashes, issues). They still get authentication errors or server crashes from time to time, it's the nature of the beast that is PC gaming. If a server crash is a sign of FAIL, every online game on the market is a FAIL. Jeez I hate that word now.

But, apart from that, it would be nice if there was something up on the main page of the official STO website to state what is going on and what is being done. Since the forums are down, that's all I ask. Something to keep us updated.
I guess I was half hoping this wouldn't happen, but aren't nearly all MMO launches rocky and rife with problems like the ones currently occurring? From experience, I'd say yes.
Have fun those who have got in! I envy you.

I agree but at the same time I'm someone who has played CoH and CO at launch/headstart both cryptic's babys and both failed in similar fashion at launch. So with that I went into this already expecting the same. Though I do have to say shame on them for not at least learning from their champions online launch that was just months ago and went through the exact same problems during the head start. By now with their experience in launches they should of anticipated and set Q's in place to reduce the sudden stress from every potential customer logging in at the same time but I digress.
So it was expected.
However whether or not it was expected still doesn't take the sting out of the fact I've already put 280 dollars into the game to only be able to participate on a forum on an independent web site 55 minutes into the official head start.
So I'll just sit here squeeze my stress ball and try to be patient while they go through the same thing they just went through with CO months ago.
I was logged on, then decided to log off to recreate my character, bad idea. I believe their account server went boom. That is why you cant authenticate and why there are still players online playing. And jeez it didnt take long for the annoying whiners to start posting, pathetic.
Yup, got into the tutorial, crashed and now can't authenticate. Like no one saw this coming. I anticipate about 6 hours of emergency maintenance today, and tomorrow and every day of the head start.
I think everyone saw this coming tbh. I'm going to the pub, I doubt it'll be back online tonight
Heck yeah Zinzan good call, i'll be there in spirits lol
WoW, Warhammer, AoC, christ i could go on.....they all had problems at launch, i can't think of any mmorpg except LOTRO which had anything but a rocky beginning.
AoC servers were fine during head start / launch, but people tend to have selective memory when they defend others
One more thing I would like to point out though realizing I only had negative to say in my previous post. Even though I beleive Cryptic fails at launches I do however feel that they make a good enough product that at least I myself will sit through the initial issues and continue to play. Hence I've already purchased my life sub lol.
yeah this is no different from any game launch in any way, though they knew they needed more servers weeks ago and they should have been preping for this by getting even more of them. Even WoW crashed on launch day a few times, I really think all the people shouting epic fail need to read up on mmo history. when you get to many people trying to do one thing at once anything will crash. Give them a bit to fix it, if it's not better by tomorrow then you can shout fail.

What, the servers were overwhelmed at launch, just like every other mmo?
Sucks I'm stuck at work and can't play yet, even if it would just be to stare at the login screen, lol.

I imagine the game's popularity has overshadowed everything they could have imagined. Who knows how many people are beating at the gates to get in.
Everyone should have expected it to start rocky, it's probably a huge amount of preorders trying to log in at once.
From the official forum page:

Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy
Yes this MMO and this MMO failed at launch, but you know what maybe someone would learn from all of these mistakes already.

I was in and playing and got booted. It told me it could no longer authenticate me. I thought that was odd since I was already in game.
Woot authenticated see you all later
Aye, this is like the days of SWG, when SOE had to fly Oracle engineers red eye from VA to CA.
So much for Cryptic's single server idea again. FAIL.
woot im in! See ya laterz
