Definately depends on how many accounts you have and how good the game really is.
SWG still has more depth than any other MMO I have tried. Even after the NGE.
The newest game I see are more a copy of WoW than ever. IE "very" simple.
As far as "repetitive" tasks being not fun, etc. etc. etc. What the hell do you think that model is based from? RL! If you need more, go to Vegas baby!
Lifetime seems like a good deal as long as you know that you will play more than one year. Had I done this with SWG, I would definately be laughing all the way right now.
However considering most software products are lucky to remain competitive for 2 years before major changes kill the product, seems risky and scamish when they could close the doors after six months. Then again, considering that it is ST, maybe that offsets all that risk and you can "assume" you will play at least a year.
Either way, no matter the online game, when you are the fist paying customers, you are really the "Real Beta Testers". Anything done for what is called "Alpha Testing" cannot possibly do a decent job of properly evaluating the real user experience. What is called beta testing to the public is really a live alpha test. Thus the first year is critical in that success, or lack there of, is determined.
If I had to place a bet in Vegas or lose my left nutt, I would bet that STO will last at least one year from now and be considered at least a moderate success.
I bought the lifetime to LoTRO, because of the IP (love Tolkien) and also because I could see during the beta that it was a full featured MMORPG. Even though I don't play all the time, I am happy that I can always play and I support the game getting better.
I didn't buy the lifetime to STO because of the IP (love Star Trek, but this is not it) and also because I could see during the beta that it was not a full featured MMORPG, but instead some kind of smallish co-op ship battle simulator. I also do not have faith in the developer since buying CO.
If'n you have the money, I don't see anything wrong with buying a lifetime sub to a game. It is probably a mistake to think that you are saving money somehow, though.
Buying a lifetime sub to this game is a bit iffy, best to wait a few months.. personally i'd be surprised if it lasted 6.. but.. who knows they might fix/add a lot of stuff in that time period.. i'd hold off at least 3 months before deciding to buy a lifetime sub to a game... especially in the case of STO... just common sense really.
Get it now before you realize how much game altering stuff they are going to toss into the cash shop on top of your full priced game box and a monthly sub that is up there with the highest subs on the market. DO IT NOW OR ROPER WILL EAT YOUR CORNBREAD.
Come on guys and gals! Hurry up and buy STO!!! The deadline is comin'!
Theres a deadline ???
now theres a red flag already (well ok the game has a few of those already) but pressure selling a product and introducing a deadline for no other reason than 'they wanted to' has all kinds of implications.. and not good ones either.. if this is all above board and legitimate, then there can be no good reason for introducing an artificial deadline. quite frankly.. it stinks.
I got my Lotro one (totally worth it, never hit the cap and i don't plan to soon but i have gotten a good 6-8 months out of it over the past few years and plan to get more in the future).
I got my Champions online (worth it, i loved CoH but couldn't be stuffed to keep resubbing, while the content is lacking i don't cruise through it at the speed of light. Total play time so far is about 2 months and i am feeling the super hero itch again)
Those 2 i spent ages finding out all the flaws in the games and all the ways it could go wrong but both are fairly solid games (despite what most people think of CO, there are lot's of people who do enjoy it).
That being said STO has a very very sketchy future and having beta tested it all i can say is the ship combat rocks...everything else just screams meh. That to me does not justify a lifetime sub especially one that is an extra $40 compared to the other ones.
I guess once STO is out and running then Cryptic will really show where it wants to go as it moves it's developers into positions in both CO and STO.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
I followed STO months and was uber stoked... then came the Klingon mishap and now, well... Maybe someday there will be a Star Trek mmo that is more like what I envisioned...

You don't get the Borg post Feb 2nd if you purchase the lifetime subscription. This whole thing is pretty lame IMO.

I come back in a year and see where this is.

No.
$240 for a game with a questionable future, not gonna happen.
If the game were not so one dimensional, perhaps.
For POTBS in space with no economy, no thank you.
